SEO in the UK
-
Will soon be starting to do SEO for a client in the UK and wondered if there was anything I should do differently for what I do in the United States?
-
Yep, bowler hats for sure!
-
Give us an idea of the industry and what the monetisation is and we can be more specific
I second that the website language is not much of an issue, but spelling is! Also, set your html language to UK English
We do a lot of international content development and have a style guide for each so that anyone who works on a foreign site has a quick reference to turn to
Geo text and UK based linkbuidling should be standard concepts. You could try a few paid press releases via http://www.prnewswire.co.uk/
obviously, everyone in images should be wearing a bowler hat and all men should have a pipe

Mostly it's the same, but if you are targeting google.co.uk you will need to pay attention to the small details.
1. Language - the language is the same, don't worry about having to sound like someone from Mary Poppins, there is really little difference and colloquialisms really have no place in writing for a broad audience.
2. Spelling - watch your spelling, we do things a little different over here. Watch, your z's and s's and maybe get it read by a UK copywriter. This is important, if you have US spellings, you are telling google it's for a US audience!
3. GEO Stuff - You can specify the location you are targeting in webmaster tools, obviously, but you can also do more. Make sure the UK address is on the site, make sure you use the correct monetary units and any other localisation that is important to the business.
4. Link Building - You will want to find some UK link sources, ideally topically relevant ones as well. That's not to say you can't get links from the US, it's no biggy but you want to make sure you have some quality UK ones.
Really, it's not much different, just the smaller details so don't sweat it to much.
Matt Cutts made this video about releasing the same content over multiple top level domains (TLDs) yesterday I think and whilst it is a different subject there are some good indicators of what they are looking for

I am probably sharing too much of my own personal experiences and expectations. Perhaps I lived a sheltered life
I had assumed working with someone from England would be like working with someone from another US state. We all speak English, right?
I never anticipated not being able to fully understand everything that was said in a conversation. Nor did I expect such a different system of taxation. These were two areas of culture shock for me.
-
Haha, Ryan you make us sound as if we are aliens or something
-
A few thoughts I would share from my experiences in England:
-
England has VAT which is a tax on goods and services. The laws surrounding VAT are quite different then what we are accustomed to for taxation in the US. You may want to gain a high level understanding of how VAT works depending on your role in the SEO process.
-
"British" English can be quite different from American English. I had serious communication problems when I first began speaking to people from England. One example is "Prices here are much dearer". I guessed that either meant more expensive or cheaper, but had no idea which. You may want to read a quick guide such as: http://www.effingpot.com/slang.shtml
-
Do not just treat England as if it was another US state. The culture is quite a bit different.
There isn't any other more direct advice I have to offer.

Multilingual webshop SEO
Hi, I have a question concerning multilingual SEO for webshops. This is the case: the root domain is example.be, which has several subdomains. One of these subdomains is shop.example.be which is used for two webshops (Dutch and French), being shop.example.be/nl and shop.example.be/fr .
International SEO | | Mat_C
The other root domain is example.lu (for Luxemburg) which is only used for the subdomain for the Luxemburg webshop in French, being shop.example.lu/fr.
The content on the .lu/fr webshop is a small part of the content on the .be/fr webshop, and the product descriptions are the same and are both of course in French. The webshops will be redesigned and restructured, and the question is what to do with the .lu/fr webshop. There are two possibilities: Integrate this webshop for Luxemburg in the existing .be webshop, since most of the products are the same and the .lu webshop doesn't get a lot of visitors because of Luxemburg being a small country. The only thing to do then would be setting up a 301 from the .lu webshop to the .be/fr version to transfer link value.
People in Luxemburg already sometimes get pages from the .be/fr webshop in the SERP anyway because these already have a bigger authority than the .lu/fr pages. Keep the .lu/fr webshop and use hreflang tags so the correct pages with similar content are shown in the correct country. I know that when using different TLD's this normally isn't an issue anyway, so implementing hreflang tags even isn't really necessary. Please feel free to share your thoughts about what would be the best approach. Thanks!1 -
Ecommerce Product Page Optimization & International SEO
Hello, I'm working on our website SEO optimization. We have a thousands of products pages with different structures for the languages (arg) and very depth folder path .com/[folder]/[folder]/[folder]/product1.hmtl So now I have the happiness of working on the optimization of the website with themajor risk of impacting all current ranking. But anyway, here are a few questions I have on the way. Part 1 - International URL Our websites target people per country and languages. We do not have shops per countries (not enough resources_) but we try to get at least website per languages. What could be the best option?_ Url Parameters +hreflang So we save one folder less and the proper setup. But I'm just scared it's gonna be too messy for Google URL:.com/product1**?lang=fr** Product page:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href=".com/product1" / Language folder + hreflang one folder more but clearer structure URL:.com**/fr/**product1 **Product **page:****link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href=".com/product1" / Part 2 - Product URL Our website is structure per categories so the product comes after. However, I've seen a lot of websites recently removing the categories to save folders space. What should be the most efficient option? Category folder It's obviously a good practice but this + the language folder makes already 2 folders URL:.com/categoryA/product1-{targetedKW} {targetedKW} = cheap product, best price or else All in url I've never done it but it somehow makes sense URL:.com/categoryA-product1-{targetedKW} Part 3 - Keyword stuffing As I'd like to get most of it automatically done, what could be the best places to add a few KW. **Markups:**All the ones we can **Meta Descriptions:**optimize one for Google + one for twitter + one for facebook Longer to do but then from google shopping and other automatic links, we could have the perfect or, at least, best description possible **All other option:**Reuse our product name + {targetter KW1 KW2 ...} Product description_ex: content_ Buttons (click to buy)ex: button title="Buy product_name cheap" alt="Purchase product_name"Buy Product name/button Images:same than above Meta:Titles and meta description Hn

Does replacing of external redirects impact SEO?
Previously I have asked about the replacing of internal redirects with actual live pages. The answer is, yes it'll work but may not be huge impact. Now I am concerned with external redirects. We have enough number of external redirecting links. I am thinking to replace them with actual landing pages. Will this improve SEO? Thanks, Satish

How to SEO for Spanish-Speaking People in California
I found myself in need of translating our current website into Spanish language so that we can target the Spanish-speaking population of L.A. and surrounding areas. I have several questions: 1. What should my url structure be? ex: domain.com/es/subpage
International SEO | | cgman
would that work? 2. Do I need to worry about any header information? Do I just translate the whole thing into Spanish with meta info etc..? What about rel="canonical", what do I need to do with the spanish translated pages? Any other tips for SEO in Spanish? I plan on hiring a translator to translate the entire website into Spanish and thought about putting it in its own sub-directory, for example: domain.com/es/ Thanks for looking!0 -
Poor Google.co.uk ranking for a UK based .net, but great Google.com
I run an extremely popular news & community website at http://www.onedirection.net, but we're having a few ranking issues in Google.co.uk. The site gets most of its traffic from the USA which isnt a bad thing - but for our key term "one direction", we currently don't rank at all on Google.co.uk. The site is located on a server based in Manchester, UK, and we used to rank very well earlier this year - fluttering about in position 5-7 most of the time. However earlier this year, around July, we started to fall down to page 2 or 3, and at the start of this month we don't rank at all for "one direction" on Google.co.uk. On Google.com however we're very strong, always on page one. We're definitely indexed on .co.uk, just not for main search term - which I find a bit frustrating. All the content on our site is unique, and we write 2-4 stories every day. We have an active forum too, so a lot of our content is user-generated. We've never had any "unnatural link building" messages in Webmaster Tools, and our link profile looks fine to me. Do we just need more .co.uk links, or are we being penalised for something? (I can't imagine what though). It certainly seems that way though. Another site, "www.onedirection.co.uk" which is never updated and has a blatant ad for something completely unrelated on its homepage, ranks above us at the moment- which I find quite frankly appalling as our site is pretty much regarded as the worlds most popular One Direction news and fan site. We've spent the last few months improving the page-load times of our site, and we've reduced any unneccesary internal linking on the site. Approx 2 months ago we launched a new forum on the site, 301'ing all the old forum links to the new one, so that could have had an impact on rankings - but we'd expect to see an impact on Google.com as well if this was an issue. We definitely feel that we should be ranking higher on Google.co.uk. Does anyone have any ideas what the iproblems could be? Cheers, Chris.
