New Domain Name For Site That Ranks Highly on Key Terms
-
Here's my problem -- which is actually a pretty good problem to have.
My client is a speciality service provider in an extremely competitive field. It charges 3 to 5 times what others do for providing a super-premium level of service. It doesn't have -- nor does it want -- many customers. I can't go into details, but let's just say the business model is a bit like the charity or premium newsletter publishing model. It is extremely hard to recruit new members -- but once recruited, members tend to stay for a long time at high price points. Personal referral is key.
As result of my efforts over the last 90 days, the client's SEO results have skyrocketed. After a couple of false starts, we have focussed on key terms the target demographic is likely to search, rather than the generic terms others in the industry use. We have also had great success with a social media strategy -- since the few people likely to be interested in paying such high prices know like-minded folks.
For the first time, my client is getting "walk in" prospects. They are delighted! But they are not really walk-ins. They have already found the site -- either through SERPs or Facebook or Twitter.
Now we need to get to the next level.
Here's the problem: the client's domain name sucks. It is short, but combines an acronym with one of the words in its long-version name. It uses the British spelling version of the long name fragment, even though most Canadians now use American spelling. And it is a .ca, rather than a dot.com
So I think we have to bite the bullet and change to the long, dot com version of the name, which is available and has the additional benefit of having embedded within it a key search term.
I am basically an editorial/content guy and not a tech guy. The IT guys at my firm are strongly encouraging me to make the change...in very "colorful" language. We can certainly do 301 redirects at the page level.
But I would like some additional validation before proceeding.
My questions are:
-
how much link juice might we lose? I've seen the figure of 10% bandied around. Is it accurate?
-
might we see a temporary dip in results? If so, how long would it last?
-
what questions did I forget to ask? What additional info do you need to offer informed advice ?

More colorful language.

Nobody knows for sure. Not an awful lot.

You might have unstable SERPs for a few days to a couple of weeks. It's possible that your rankings could drop a place or two. But most of the time there is very little damage if you do the switch properly.

Your question seems to be... "Should I do this?" If this was my site the answer would be yes.
In the past year we have done two domain moves. One was positive results all around, great results. The other was up everywhere except the trophy KW which we slipped from #1,2,3 to #2,3,4 but are working to get it back. Sales are still very strong.

Thanks. Very helpful.

I am not aware of any solid measuring tool which can offer an exact analysis of how much link juice is lost. All the information I have ever encountered offers the 10% figure as the maximum amount of link juice lost. The actual figure is 1 - 10%, not a flat 10%.
might we see a temporary dip in results? If so, how log would it last.
The loss of link juice is permanent as long as the re-directed links are used. Once your migration is complete, Google and other search engines will update their links as they crawl the site. This can take several weeks depending on the size and depth of the site. Once complete, then all of your search traffic will go straight to your site.
You can further help by cleaning up your site. Often you may have articles with anchor links using the old URL. If you update these links to the new URL, then they wont require the re-directs. This change is important because readers often copy your content and paste it to other sites. Use your crawl report for this process.
The last thing you can do is try to update anyone who links to your site with your new URL. In many cases this may not be feasible. Sometimes you have a strong relation with a site who links to you, and can request for your link to be updated. This also works with any directory links to your site.
In summary, you may see a dip but that is not likely. Links are just one of 200+ factors involved in calculating your placement in search results, and the re-direct juice loss is very small. You should gain a boost by the .com name along with the keyword added to your URL. Your benefits should outweigh the cost.

Site Title When Your Domain name is the keyword
Hello, I've been struggling with an issue for years. I own UsedCubicles.com. I'm ranked very well, the site generates leads and income on a regular basis. However, I never know what to name the site on the home page. The main keyword I go after is obviously "Used Cubicles". I also have product category named "Used Cubicles". I know google doesn't recognize my Used Cubicles product category as conical and reverts to the home page. I would rather Google use my categories more effectively to rank content or pages. My current site title on the home page is NOT GOOD. Used Cubicles | Usedcubicles.com. Im nervous to change it, however because Im not sure if its helping me rank for the keyword, which I do. For years I was #1 across the country but lately its been dropping. Any advice is appreciated.

Migration to a new domain
Hi everyone, So i have one project where I'm planning to move current content on new domain, two reasons: 1. It seems current domain has some google penalty (backlink related, not manual) 2. Client wants rebranding and already has domain with new brand name. So as content is high quality and there is no content related penalty from google, what would be the best way to migrate existing content without passing any penalty AND without Google treating it as duplicate content. If i do 301 i suspect any penalty there is might follow, if i just copy existing content it won't be original content, what is the best solution here? Thanks

Is it posible to improve site rankings working only with an other site?
Hi everyone, i´ll try to explain a situation is happening to me, i´m goint to try to explain the case (im writing the sites without links for explication purposes. Site 1: Adventurerooms Site 2: Adventureroomsmallorca Site 3: Adventureroomsmadrid (the new site) What happen is that at first there was only Adventurerooms and Adventureroomsmallorca, Adventurerooms was for Madrid and linked to the one in Mallorca too, was kind of giving the information for Madrid but in first page split with a link to Mallorca. In a new strategy we create Adventureroomsmadrid for Madrid, and leave Adventurerooms for Spain (with links to Adventureroomsmadrid and Adventureroomsmallorca. We redirect the info for Madrid in Adventurerooms to Adventureroomsmadrid with 301 redirections. We work during this 3 months in Adventureroomsmadrid making content in the blog, and improving (now Adventureroomsmadrid is Moz 15 (perhaps even more), and Adventurerooms is Moz 10. Surprising Adventurerooms is getting better in its search rankings, even when we took away content from it and even without working well. Adventureroomsmadrid is also improving but not as much as Adventurerooms (i know that is a new site, only 3 months), but Adventurerooms gets better results with no content and only DA of 10. I hope i´ve explain the case with my english so the question is: "Is it posible to improve site rankings working only with an other site?" Thanks in advance

Domain Name Change-Negative Ranking Effect?
I am considering redirecting my domain name from www.nyc-officespace-leader.com to www.metro-manhattan.com. My company name is Metro Manhattan Office Space, Inc. so the new domain will be more consistent our identity. The Metro domain was registered with GoDaddy five years ago but has only been used for email and for forwarding (entering www.metro-manhattan.com will forward visitor to www.nyc-officespace-leader.com). What is the likely hood that redirecting to the Metro-manhattan.com domain will result in a drop in traffic and ranking? I asked this question a year ago and the results were mixed. But one year is an eternity for Google. I am hoping that re-directs work better now and that if this is implemented correctly there will be no ranking/traffic/domain authority loss. Thoughts?? Thanks, Alan

Rankings Tanked since new Site redesign land new url Structure ? Anything Glaringly Obvious I need to check ?
Hi All, I've just checked my rankings and everything on my eCommerce Site has pretty much tanked really badly since my new URL structure and site redesign was put in a place 2 weeks ago. My url structure was originally long and had underscores but we have now made it clean, shorter and use hyphens. We also have location specific pages and we have incorporated these into the new url structure.Basically it now pretty much follows the breadcrumb trail on our website. We were originally a general online hire site but now we have become niche and only concentrating on one types of products, so we got rid of all the other categories/products and pages we do not deal with anymore. Our Rankings issue , was only bought to light in the most recent MOZ Ranking report so it's looking site google hates our new store. Someone mentioned the other day, that Google may have been doing a Panda/Penguin refresh last weekend, but I am surprised to have dropped like 20 to 50 places for most of my keywords. We have set up the 301 redirects, We have also made the site alot smaller and set up a few thousand 404's to get rid of a lot of redundant pages . We have cut down massively on the thin/duplicate content and have lots of good new content on there. We did new sitemaps , set up schema.org. , increase text to code ratio . Setup our H1-H5 tags on all our pages. made site mobile responsive.. Basically , we are trying to do everything right. Is there anything glaringly obvious , I should be checking ?. I attach a Short url link if anyone wants to have a quick glance- http://goo.gl/7mmEx i.e Could it be a problem with the new urls or anything else that I should be looking at ?.. I.e how can I check to make sure the link juice is being passed on to the new url ? Or is all this expected when doing such changes ? Any advice greatly appreciated .. Pete

City or country name get the exact domain name devauation ?
Will using a city or country name be devalued with the exact domain name update. I want to make a new website about my favourite vacation spot. I was thinking www.specificislandactivities.com or www.bestincityname.com The site will focus on all the best things to do in that vacation spot, best dining, beaches, watersports ect. I will be writing all the content based on my experience of travelling there for over 20 years... If the site is going to be all about things to do in that city or island, how else could i name the site. www.islandtravelactivities.com Wouldn't that be using the keywords island + travel + activities in the domain ? I am so confused right now, what would be devalued in the exact domain match and what would not. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Good idea to point all registered domains to main site?
We have close to 60 domains that we are considering pointing to our main site. Is this type of a redirect a good idea? We have a number of domains that are industry related but do not have our brand name in the domain. Should we point these sites to our homepage as well? Pros/Cons? Examples: <colgroup><col width="201"></colgroup> XXXXX.BE XXXXX.BIZ XXXXX.BZ XXXXX.CC XXXXX.CO XXXXX.CO.UK XXXXX.COM XXXXX.INFO XXXXX.JOBS XXXXX.ME XXXXX.ME.UK XXXXX.MOBI XXXXX.MX XXXXX.NET.CN XXXXX.NL XXXXX.ORG.UK XXXXX.TW XXXXX.US XXXXX.WS XXXXXEXCHANGE.COM XXXXXONLINE.COM WIDGETSRUS.COM WIDGETBLOG.COM |
