Could someone be sabataging my site by bad backlinks?
-
Hello,
As I have said before I am new to SEO and especially new to this type of software. I am trialing MOZ, ahrefs and MajesticSEO. I just used the Site Explorer on ahrefs and it showed me that a bunch of backlinks was created today but I haven't engaged anyone in "SEO" for many months.
Why would this be? See the image for a screenshot.

Cheers. Makes sense.

Your going to have to disavow tool those links and you might want to take a big chunk of your links out and start over. Like Matt Cutts said use it like a Machete not like a Scalpel.

Thanks Lynn, I contacted an old SEO person and he explained that it was a mistake and that it was done in 2011. I wonder how many other mistakes were made! I have found more than one strange occurrences-- actually I estimate over 100. It's a no-wonder why my site got smashed by Google in May last year.
I will have to go through and cull and disavow them all. -
Hi Carl,
Its hard to say for sure, but those links look to me like the kind of stuff you get with the 200 dollars for 500 back links type services. Keep in mind that any link explorer application is not showing you links that were created today, just links that were first discovered by that application today, so the links could be days, weeks or even months old depending on how often the pages of the site are crawled by the app. As a general rule lower value sites with fewer incoming links are crawled less often, and those look mainly like low value article sites. Also keep in mind that if you had a company doing this kind of work for you at one point, these links are often automated to a degree and could be coming online weeks/months after the initial order was placed.
In view of all that, I would think that chef link might just be a mistake from the same service, somehow your link got attached to a different site/project or something like that. If your link profile is full of those kind of links yes you will probably be having trouble ranking and maybe disavowing as Michael suggests is a good idea (don't expect quick gains though...).

Thanks but why are they occurring? What is causing them to appear?

If you are getting links like this I would disavow the domains responsible.

Reciprocal Backlinks
Hi all, We've just started looking into backlinks for our website, and we're...a bit overwhelmed to say at least. We thought the best way to start with backlinks is to reach out to our industry partners, and ask them to put a link to our website on theirs (in a blog, or a relevant page of course), as it's relevant for users. However, the question we almost always get is, can you do the same and link back to our website? How does google look at reciprocal links? We think they can be seen as a 'transaction of links' and not have as much link juice as links which aren't reciprocal. Is there any best practice for how to approach this? Thank you in advance. Diana

Instructables site - follow and nofollow
Hi, I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this issue yet, so I'm posting here for help. I have just created a profile on the site Instructables - http://www.instructables.com/ as well as an article. The issue is that I could find most of the published articles there have follow links in them - e.g links under materials: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Reclaimed-Industrial-Coffee-Table/ - however mine is attributed nofollow links. I simply don't know why this is or if there is a way around it to get the links followed. This question only relates to the links in the articles, not the profile links - which are followed. Anybody knows? Thanks, Alex

Broken Backlinking
I'm curious for those who have used broken backlinking as a tactic for clients - what % of emails do you normally get results from. For example, if you email 100 webmasters, how many would actually replace the broken link with yours?

E-commerce canonicals on other sites
Hi, I have a client with a new e-commerce site which is poorly ranked. Besides his e-commerce, he offers his products in a local site which very similar to Amazon. The description and HTML structure of his products, is the same on both pages. What do you think? Should I add canonical tags to the Amazon-like site? Or do I just need to change both contents to avoid duplication?

Is there a software to help me check whether the sites that i give link to, also place my link on their site (reciprocal link)?
When i exchange links with others, i usually put their link on my site hoping that they'll do the same. Since it's impossible to check all sites whose link i have placed on my page to see if they have put a link back to me, i was wondering whether there is a kind of software to help me do that!

Backlinking post penguin
Does anyone have any effective strategies about how to backlink for a new website. I'm just really cautious of this new penguin update and don't want to submit to too many directories or do anything that will get penalised, seen as the website is new.

One client, one b2b site and one b2c site - linking relationship
I have a client that has 2 websites in a particular industry. The first website concentrates on advertising services and products to other organisations/companies but does not sell anything online. The second website is an ecommerce site with many products from the same industry and is more a b2c operation. Would it be considered ok to add maybe 5 footer links from one to the other and vice versa? considering that they are footer links and will ultimately increase total links pointing to both site exponentially. Both sites are hosted in the same location.
