Anyone have experience with using HTTPS compared to HTTP and how it could affect rankings?
-
Are there any negative or positive effects of using https over http when it comes to rankings?
-
If you have users register for anything (like comments for example) then I would use https, or any kind of ecommerce.
Other than that, I don't think you pick up an advantage.
-
https is slower, as it encrypts your data, and has to be decrypted at the other end. if you have no reason to use it, then just use http
-
Mike's right - Matt Cutts is a huge HTTPS fan but there are no direct benefits yet. If both versions of the site are available, you need to make a decision about which one you want to use and stick with it, either redirecting the other or pointing to the preferred version with a canonical tag.
We used to say that only pages requiring secure connections (payment pages, or pages where other sensitive information is passed) should be secure, but since Google can clearly handle these pages and some high-ranking people within the search team prefer them, I'd say you're definitely safe to use them if you want to.

At this point, no - there are not positive or negative effects you'd need to worry about.
If you are wanting to switch from one to the other, you will want to make sure you you have the proper redirects/canonical tags in place.
One way to choose which option is best for your situation would be to check your analytics and see which site is getting more traffic (if both the http and https versions of your site are accessible).
Matt Cutts did make a comment earlier this year that he personally would want to give a boost to secure sites - but that is not currently in place.
Depending on your audience https may be more appropriate. For instance, if you Google "banking" - you can see both http and https websites ranking - savvy users will probably notice the secure sites and visit those. I guess it all depends on your industry and your audience though.
Hope this helps.
Mike

Internal pages ranking over the homepage: How to optimise to rank better at Google?
Hi, We have experienced a shift in SERP from internal pages ranking over website homepage for more than a year. Previously website homepages used to rank for the primary keyword like moz.com for "SEO". Now we can see that internal pages like moz.com/learn/seo/what-is-seo been ranking for the primary keyword "SEO". Google is picking up these "what is ABC" pages than the homepage. All our competitor sites are ranking with these internal pages which are about "what is (primary keyword)". We do have the same internal pages "what is....", but this pages is not ranking; only our homepage is ranking. Moreover we dropped more than 15 positions after this shift in SERP. How to diagnose this? Thanks

Should I document rankings from an Incognito Window?
Mozzers, what are your thoughts on documenting SEO results from an incognito window? Does anyone have any articles they can recommend that talk about this subject? Is it better to document results from the normal window or from an incognito window?

How to find keywords competitor is using
I am doing work for a landscaping company and having trouble with finding the best keywords. Most of keywords are so expensive on adwords to use, so obviously we want to optimize as best possible. How do I find what keywords competitors are using for campaigns and/or optimized for? thx.

Ranking dropped with no page changes
My rank for a keyword went from ranking #1 to #22. The page grade for this keyword is A, there was no site structure changes. The only thing I can see is that tumblr and reddit and other sources are now listed for this keyword and it's difficulty went from the mid-low teens to 28%. However, even given that, I do not a see a reason for this keyword alone to fall so far. It was giving us a ton of traffic, in fact, most of our organic search results came from this term for nearly two months. And 2 weeks ago for no reason, we were pushed to page 3. Has anyone else had similar experiences how do you counter it, and what can we do?

Google.co.uk vs pages from the UK - anyone noticed any changes?
We've started to notice some changes in the rankings of Google UK and Google pages from the UK. Pages from the UK have always typically ranked higher, however it seems like these are slipping, and Google UK pages (pages from the web) are climbing. We've noticed a similar thing happening in the Bing/Yahoo algorithm as well. Just wondered if anyone else has anyone else noticed this? Thanks
