Links On Expired Domains
-
Does anybody know if a link on an expired domain affects your SEO?
I'm just asking because the SEO agency we used before used to create websites and then link to our company - very spammy.
We have since ditched this agecny, however they wanted an extortionate amount to remove these links. Therefore, we decided to wait until these domains expired and then the links wouldn't exist.
However, I am now completing a link audit and some of these sites are still appearing in the results (obtained from Link Research Tools) but I cannot access the links because the domains have expired.
Can anyone help?

If all of the domains are not expired you can use the disavow tool as well. That should be your first course in a situation like this, especially when someone is trying to extort you of bad links. If you disavow them, google does not penalize you for them and drops them out of your backlink profile.

Hi Brian
If the domain has expired, it should only be a matter of time before Google recrawls the page/domain and sees that the link is no longer present, therefore discounting the link from your link profile.
You could have a look and see if this has happened by typing into your address bar (if using Chrome) either:
cache:example.com
site:example.comThe first one will check to see if the URL is cached and the second one if it is indexed. If a cached version of the page no longer exists, the link has almost certainly been discounted, whereas if the domain is no longer indexed it would be safe to assume that the link will be discounted soon by Google as well.
I hope this helps - sorry to hear of your previous agency resorting to such backhanded tactics.

Cross-Domain Tracking Urgent Query :-(
Hi Mozzers! One of my clients is having an issue with cross-domain tracking, in other words their own domain is seen as a huge referrer. When you land on their site, which is www.sunway.ie, and then choose a holiday to book it then takes you to another domain which is www.sunwayholidays.ie, during the booking process. I'm just wondering if there is a Google Analytics genius out there who may be able to take a quick look and let me know if there is any obvious solution to this within the Google Analytics code? Thanks in advance everyone! Gavin

How to Detect Links within PDFs
Hi All, I have a funny situation that I would like some advice on handling... There are a handful of domains that were created several years ago in support of an offline to online campaign. These domains are simply vanity domains that use an IFrame at 100% to show the content of another page. Essentially, the content of the sites I manage are embedded into the frame on the vanity URL. Since I do not monitor or have access to any analytics for the vanity URLs, is there a way to tell how others are discovering those vanity URLs? As stated above, they were used on direct mail flyers two years ago and never appeared online. However, I still get a good deal of traffic from them and cannot believe people have hung onto those flyers in such volume. I have used Open Site Explorer for the vanity URLs, which show no links existing anywhere online. I am wondering if the vanity URLs may exist in pdf lists of local businesses that match my category, etc. Is there any way to tell how traffic finds those vanity URLs without analytics or discovered links through link profiling tools?

Removing Bad Links, Bad?
Our situation is this.. We recently went through a major redesign that included a significant change in content and URL structure. This of course cause a significant increase in 404 from our search traffic. In an effort to minimize those 404s we requested that Google remove certain URL directories from their index. Doing this resulted in a 90% drop in the number of impressions we were getting from search. My question is this, is it better to allow the 404s with a good landing page that explains the changes or better to remove the bad urls? Much thanks...

Any thoughts on why Nextag and MonsterMarketPlace are linking to our site?
I'm looking in WMT at the crawl errors and I noticed that our website has gotten a lot of Not Found crawl errors that seem strange. A lot of these not found pages are Display URLs that I use in PPC advertising, but not actual redirects (i.e. explorica.com/EducationalTrips). When I looked at how these links were being found, the inbound links were coming from Nextag.com and monstermarketplace.com, two sites that our company has never had a relationship with. We're an educational travel company, so we'd have no reason to. When I followed the links, it looks like it's coming from their "Sponsored Links," but these aren't Google or Bing Ads. We don't even advertise on the content network. Example link: http://www.monstermarketplace.com/starters-and-alternators/alternator-motorola-style-12v-51a-10376 (the ads do rotate so my site might not appear when you check it out). Anyone ever had experience with this type of issue?
