Do pages with irrelevant keywords hurt the domain overall for ranking for relevant keywords?
-
I have been doing SEO for the University I work at. We are optimizing our degree pages on a page-by-page basis. So hypothetically we have a page optimized for "online accounting degree" and another for "online marketing degree", etc. Although our focus is on specific page optimization, we hope the by-product is that the whole domain will start to rank better for "online degree".
First of all, is this a reasonable expectation?
Second, if this IS the case, will pages full of irrelevant keywords hurt the overall strategy? For example, our registrar and financial aid PDFs that are full of legal/financial mumbo-jumbo. Are these lowering our keyword density of relevant keywords across the domain?
-
I agree, potential students will likely be searching for specific degrees by academic field.
The page that is optimized for "online degrees" will be the page that high schools, businesses, other universities and education portals will be linking to most often. When these programs are marketed the marketing materials could invite links to this specific page.
-
I would bear in mind that most people who are serious about undertaking an online degree are likely to search for an online degree in a specific field - Online Marketing Degree etc, rather than the very vague 'Online Degree', so I would target one main keyword (and related keyword variations) per page/discipline.
Potential customers who are further down the buying funnel will use more specific searches to find exactly what they want - afterall, they will know that a search for online degree will bring out LOTS of irrelevant results and not deliver what they are looking for - so they drill down using the long tail keywords.
Take a look at The Long Tail by Chris Anderson - http://www.amazon.com/Long-Tail-Revised-Updated-Business/dp/1401309666/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1308771559&sr=1-2
You will also stand a better chance in the SERPS targeting the longer tail keywords.
It's easy to get blinded by numbers in SEO and it is very easy to all end up chasing the same keywords - when they might not be the best converting keywords - I have spent some years doing exactly that and it is only in recent years that I changed my tactics and started pursuing 'more of less' and as a consequence improved the performance of my online business considerably.
If by 'irrelevant keywords' you mean the words that occur naturally when discussing your subject area then it is absolutely not an issue if you provide quality information, written for the reader primarily - not the search engines. It is easy to get blinded by focusing on nothing other than keywords, which usually results in their overuse in an unnatural and spammy looking way.
Remember - Search Engines won't buy what you are selling - but your visitors will - IF you can show them ithat you offer what it is they are looking for using tried and tested sales copy, which is reassuring and can demonstrate the product features which will benefit your visitor/potential customer.

we hope the by-product is that the whole domain will start to rank better for "online degree".
I have a website that has a lot of content about a specific topic. As that site has gained content and links from other websites in that topic area I believe that the domain as a whole has gained ranking strength in that topic niche. I don't have a formal study to support this but I simply see that new pages seem to rank easily in that niche.
In your situation, your domain might gain strength for "online degree", however, it will still remain in competition with other educational websites who are doing the same thing. So unless you are becoming the gorilla in that niche I would not expect this alone to put you on the first page of Google for "online degree". You will have to earn that ranking by producing an optimized page for that term and through the force of domain authority and inbound links to that page.
will pages full of irrelevant keywords hurt the overall strategy?
No. Almost every site has this type of content. Think about all of the other stuff that exists on .edu domains.
Good luck with your work. I did the same thing a long time ago when online courses were very new (and search engines were very different)

How to replace an already ranked page with a better, more optimised one?
Hello peeps! I need your collective wisdom to help me deal with something. We manage a website that is doing quite well in its niche, however we have the following problem: Our section landing pages are well established and they rank for a wide range of search terms, including some with a transactional focus. It is obvious that these pages do not cater for users with transactional intent. Our competitors are targeting those transactional keywords with a completely different type of pages, and are winning across the board (annoying but understandable). We have now created a number of pages, which are very similar to the ones that our competitors are using and with an even better on-page SEO score ... WIN! ...well, not so much! Our old section pages are still ranking for the transactional search terms and our new pages are getting very little traction and are having a really slow start. 1. I suspect there is some sort of page cannibalisation going on. How would you address that?

2. Is there a tried and tested way of telling search engines to rank your new page because it meets the search intent in a better way? Please note that we cannot just redirect the old page to the new one - there are structural and commercial reasons for keeping the old page as it is.
3. Is there anything else that I am missing? Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Should I buy a keyword rich domain to prevent competitors from buying it
Some people in the company I work for have suggested that we buy a keyword rich domain that matches a new product line that we're planning to release. I've advised that this in itself is not a good idea, as we'll need to produce high quality content for that site rather than just having it exist for ranking purposes. We already have a section on our main site focussed on this product line, so I don't think having the keyword match domain would really add anything unless we worked out what we'd use this site for. That said, I was wondering whether it might be worth buying the exact match domain anyway, in order to prevent a competitor from using it?

Why does my home page show up in search results instead of my target page for a specific keyword?
I am using Wordpress and am targeting a specific keyword..and am using Yoast SEO if that question comes up.. and I am at 100% as far as what they recommend for on page optimization. The target html page is a "POST" and not a "Page" using Wordpress definitions. Also, I am using this Pinterest style theme here http://pinclone.net/demo/ - which makes the post a sort of "pop-up" - but I started with a different theme and the results below were always the case..so I don't know if that is a factor or not. (I promise .. this is not a clever spammy attempt to promote their theme - in fact parts of it don't even work for me yet so I would not recommend it just yet...) I DO show up on the first page for my keyword.. however.. instead of Google showing the page www.mywebsite.com/this-is-my-targeted-keyword-page.htm Google shows www.mywebsite.com in the results instead. The problem being - if the traffic goes only to my home page.. they will be less likely to stay if they dont find what they want immediately and have to search for it.. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Home page mysteriously not ranking at all
Hey everyone, I'm baffled by a situation. I started working on www.hushabyephotography.com almost 3 months ago. The first thing I did was changed the address (was previously blog.hushabyephotography.com) and updated all of the links pointing from the old name to the new "www" and used 301 redirects for canonicalization. Have also built some additional links, added content to the site, and performed on-page optimization to rank for the primary key phrase "san diego newborn photography". But ranking is no where to be found, I searched for the key phrase, and at rank 190 is a random subpage, not even the home page. The listing had also disappeared from Google Places a few weeks ago after the client updated their listing (which I believe was the result of the known Places bug (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/why-you-may-need-to-hide-your-google-places-address-asap). I'm at a loss here for ideas, as I've never failed to at least have a site on the radar. There aren't any spam links so I don't think any penalties are the result. One last thing, it ranks on page 2 in both Bing and Yahoo... Please help me out Mozzers!!! 😕

Rankings for keyword variations dropped over weekend?
One of our clients has seen significant decreases over the weekend for a number of keyword variations. There have been no significant site changes, no crawl errors reported and our competitors don't seem to have been affected. The decrease has coincided with the launch of a display campaign, but surely this is just coincidental? Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Creating new pages for geo targeted keywords
What's the best way to go about creating new pages for geo targeted keywords for a business? I ask because, these keywords are areas that they provide service to, but the brick and mortar business is not located. I've already run into problems trying to put too many locations onto one page. What's the best way to attack content for these new pages in order to get these geo keywords in there?

Key page of site not ranking at all
Our site has the largest selection of dog clothes on the Internet. We're been (every so slowly) creeping up in the rankings for the "dog clothes" term, but for some reason only rank for our home page. Even though the home page (and every page on the domain) has links pointing to our specific Dog Clothes page, that page doesn't even rank anywhere when searching Google with "dog clothes site:baxterboo.com". http://www.google.com/webhp?source=hp&q=dog+clothes+site:baxterboo.com&#sclient=psy&hl=en&site=webhp&source=hp&q=dog+clothes+site:baxterboo.com&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=dog+clothes+site:baxterboo.com&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=f4efcaa1b8c328f Pages 2+ of product results from that page rank, but not the base page. It's not excluded in robots.txt, All on site links to that page use the same URL. That page is loaded with more text that includes the keywords. I don't believe there's duplicated content. What am I missing? Has the page somehow been penalized?
