How to find which directories to submit my new site?
-
Hi Guys
So as I'm just starting out, I have been told and read certain blogs that in the early stages I should submit my site to certain directories, only I would not have any idea which directories I should submit my site to, besides the few that I already know.
Any idea how I could find this out?
Cheers

Hi Nakul,
Thank you for your feedback, I read the beginners guide to link building, and a few articles around directory submissions that also suggested the same thing.
Cheers

Thanks Ryan! I used open site explorer for the first time and its great!
I'm currently working with an SEO company that submitted my site to around 30 directories, one including DMOZ, but I wanted to do some research around "how we know" that the directories we are sumitted to, are relevant, or perhaps what impact do these directory submissions have on our results. Also the other thing, we have 3 top level domains that target different countries, I've noticed a huge difference in our rankings when using top level domains in each country as appose to just using a .com
Can you recommend how I can go about finding which directories would be relevant to each country for my industry? (psychic industry)

I agree with you, the best way should be to have the best quality content, but I sometimes find that isn't always like that. You find web pages with really bad content and they are in first position in Google.

re: directories....um...when I now think of same I use "citations" instead....and here's a great link to whitesparks list of the best citation URLs in the US and other countries too....http://www.whitespark.ca/top-local-citation-sources-by-country as well as I've blogged about this again just today too here....www.canuckseo.com !

Personally, I think true directory or public information outlets are the best.
I would look at the service or product you provide, and try to understand where people would go to look for that item. If it is a service, where do people go to find out information about that service? Are there any leading authorities that you could become a member of, or post content to?
If it is a product, how do people look for it? Where do people go to look for it? Do people review it? Is your focus local or national?
When looking for opportunities, you have to be creative. I understand you are looking to increase your ranking, but you also want to have links that people will USE, not just to sit on some directory in a hope of being a ranking factor. If you are deadset on getting just links, use the MOZ backlink analyzer to see who your competitors have linking back to them.

I always use the oficial extension of Chrome "MozBar", with this tool you can see the links of websites that you think is your best competitors, For example you can search in Google with MoxBar active the word that represent your website "web desing" and you can see the results with DA and PA values, them go to high values for invetigate where this web have reffer inks. And now you have to try get links of this page.
Sound simple but it´s really hard work. The best way to appear first in Google is have the best content in your sector.
Good luck!

Directory links are the "manipulated" links of yesterday. I would strongly suggest to ignore them. Great details Alick300. I would suggest to spend some time reading Moz's Link Building and SEO Guides i.e. http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-link-building
It's very easy to get in trouble with the wrong links.

Hi,
First I would like to quote Brian Dean (Seo expert from http://www.quicksprout.com & founder of backlinko.com)
I chuckle every time people claim that directories are dead.
"In May 2012 Google deindexed a few hundred free directories. If directory links didn’t work then why would they deindex them?
Hint: they wouldn’t.
This matches my personal experience: links from the right directories can still do wonders for your site.
And because web directories are seen as “old-fashioned” in the SEO world, you can usually get from aged domains for next to nothing.
Here are some directories to consider submitting to:
Free:
Paid:
"
Brian's the link building guide is also very useful to get links for new site.

I hope above info may help you to get more links.
Thanks

Hi Alec. I'd use the Link Intersect tab on the Link Opportunities tool in Open Site Explorer: https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/opportunities/link-intersect?site=yoursitehere.com, to compare your site with some of your competitors. In this way you'll find sites that are more like niche hubs for your topic and get an insight into how and why sites in your field are gaining links. These types of sites (or just pages within a site) make up more links than the classic directories like DMOZ or Yahoo. Cheers!

GMB for Auto Dealers - New Rules
Hello, I would love to confirm if I am interpreting the auto dealer rules for GMB correctly. My understanding is that two car franchises / brands (e.g. Ford & Chrysler) can share the same physical location, but have their own GMB listing? "New car dealerships are eligible for multiple listings. You can have one listing for your dealership and one listing for each brand you sell of new cars." https://support.google.com/business/answer/9074301?hl=en&ref_topic=9074323 Thank you!

Why is my site stuck on page 2 even though it has higher DA?
Hi, I'm just trying to figure out why we're still not on first page for 'criminal lawyer sydney' (stuck on result #15) - I checked out SEO Moz and I can see the Domain Authority for our site 'criminal-lawyer.com.au' - is at 23 which is higher than other sites that rank on first page of this search. I've done a bunch of technical stuff on the site too - so if anyone can give any insight on why this could be happening it would be much appreicated. Thanks!

Adding a Directory to Website
Hiya! So we have an odd request and we wanted to see if want we want to do will add any SEO benefit. We operate a printing/design firm in Houston, Texas and have been thinking of adding a directory to our website. It would sit on our top level domain www.website.com/print-directory, it would much be a like a yelp directory listing all the print, design, and bindery shops all across the USA. We want to expand our footprint online and and to boost to our position in other cities. For example Yelp is always the top spot when you search for (CITY) + (PRINTING)/(DESIGN) the yelp directories pull up first. Now... i know why this is with their DA/UR off the charts. We have vendor that will provide all the info/data/images of all businesses in the USA something around 5K business so. The design will mesh with our current design and look seamless with the current design. The idea is that we would populate and optimize all the city pages for all those cities and provide content on each major city. So we can optimize with H tags, keywords and interlink all the other pages plus not to mention we have a great blog section and plan on interlink that throughout website. The catch would be..... is that we would put our listing first, on top of all those other local shops. Maybe we would do this for all of them but maybe a few of our target cities. We would use our addresses and nothing would be faked. URL Structure www.website.com/print-directory/austin-texas/printshops/ABCPrinter/ Questions Would this confuse Google and cause some issues with our current SERPS? We do very well in our home city and don't want to jeopardize all our hard work. Or real harm or benefit just seems to confusing people? Could we get penalized? Content would be unique (except listing information)

URL Redirects - New Site Updates
We recently switched to a new site and I realized that our developer changed our locations page from /locations to /location. Our developer set the redirects correctly, so we most of the "juice" should still transfer fine. Even though most of the link strength should transfer to the new site, the language is misleading and according to MOZBar, the previously established links to /locations do not show up. The best option in my mind is to have the developer switch back to /locations and redirect /location. Do you feel this is the best option as well and is there anything I should be cautious about when doing this?

New Global Company website launch question
Hi Community, a quick question and just some reassurance for me - We have been building a new website for a large company in the UK. Their previous website was badly made and they had franchisee websites all leading off from the main .com website all under separate sub domains on Wordpress multi site. cityname1.companyname.com
Local Listings | | SeoSheikh
cityname2.companyname.com
cityname3.companyname.com and so on... My question is this - A few of their franchisee microsites on sub domains are currently ranking very well for their chosen search terms. The new companybrand.com website has a dedicated page for each franchisee city/areas and i'm concerned that there may be a loss in rankings if the subdomain of their old 'microsites' gets pointed to their new page (which has better quality content). ie; city-location.companyname.com to be pointed to www.companyname.com/city-location Can anyone see any potential hazards in this? Thanks for any help 🙂0 -
New knowledge graph box ?
Hi Mozzers, I made a search for "ways to unclog toilet" and found this at the top of the search result page: http://cl.ly/image/2e0N033D0B1j It seems that google is adding a new kind of knowledge graph. What it is this and how can I get my clients doing the same? Is it connected to Google Business? Thanks for letting me know!

Google Maps: Submitted Feedback Changed Results
I came across something interesting today. So there is a business in one of my clients areas that had submitted and was being listed on google maps for some spammy locations. I went in and submitted feedback informing google of bad listings. Within 30 minutes or so my results for the same key phrase was different. I decided to see why. I went to other browsers on my computer and searched that key phrase and the results went back to how I originally saw them before the feedback submission. I then erased my browsers cache and after this the results now showed the original results. Does anybody know what cookies and such get placed in a browser that affect listing results? Sincerely, Garret
