Domain vs Sub Domain and Rankings
-
Hi All
Wanting some advice. I have a client which has a number of individual centres that are part of an umbrella organisation. Each individual centre has its own web site and some of these sites have similar (not duplicate content) products and services. Currently the individual centres are sub domains of the umbrella organisation.
i.e. Umbrella organisation www.organisation.org.au
Individual centres are sub domains i.e. www.centre1.organisation.org.au, www.centre2.organisation.org.au etc.
I'm feeling that perhaps this setup might be affecting the rankings of the individual sites because they are sub domains.
Would love to hear some thoughts or experience on this and whether its worth going through the process of migrating the individual centre domains.
Thanks
Ian

Without being able to view stats on the domains in question, it is impossible to give you the best advice. Generally speaking, subfolders get better results than subdomains, but there are many other factors to consider.
If you can't move to a subfolder structure, then skip this issue and start down the list of other technical optimization best practices. With time and traffic, I'm sure you'll gain in your organic rankings for selected keywords. In my experience, a domain name is but a small factor of the overall picture. The issues you'll have with these subdomains are more of a marketing cost than an SEO cost.

See my response to Munther above. Do you think that changing to centre1.org.au, centre2.org.au might be an improvement over subfolders?

Thanks Munther
Each centre is individually branded and managed so I don't think sub folders would have really worked in this case. There are also a number of smaller centres that are already in subfolders of the main site. My concern is that the amount of similar content in sub folders and sub domains and wanting to rank for similar keywords for those sub domains or pages might be diluting the rankings overall. Also it appears in some cases the main domain might be taking precedent over the individual centres for rankings.

if I were you I would change the site structure and apply following
organisation.org.au/center1
organisation.org.au/center2
organisation.org.au/center3would redirect old subdomains to sub-folders with 301.
This has been discussed several time, even Rand has a white board friday for this.
Lastly, yes it's worth moving subdomains into sub-folders, you will notice ranking increase by doing so

Hi Ian,
If the sub domain is active for some time and have gathered links, I recommend not to change it to main domain. It is good to have it as sub folders if you are building it from scratch and the main organization home page can have clear landing instructions to its sub centers. Each individual center can have separate NAP content to attract local traction.

Should I be concerned about Google indexing an old domain if the listings redirect to the new domain?
I noticed this about Moz's old domain SEOMoz.org. If the URLs from the old domain are redirecting, is there any reason to be concerned about an old domain still appearing to be indexed by Google? See here: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=site%3Aseomoz.org Links to seomoz.org are listed, but if you click them they redirect to moz.com. Is this anything to be concerned about or is everything operating as expected?

Keyword in Domain Name
Hello! My website is www.enchantingquotes.com. I also own the domain www.enchantingwallquotes.com,which forwards to my site. About 90% of my business comes from the keyword "wall quotes". Should I consider changing switching to the enchantingwallquotes.com domain and redirecting? And if I do, do I need to recreate the entire website or is there an easier way that I am overlooking? Thank you for any advise/insight!

How to rank in Google Places
Normally, I don't have a problem with local SEO (more of a multi-channel sort of online marketing guy) but this one has got me scratching my head. Look at https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wedding+venues+in+essex Theres two websites there (fennes and quendon park) that both have a much more powerful DA but don't appear in the Google Places (Google + Business or whatever it's labeled as). Why are websites such as Boreham house ranking top in the map listings? Quendon Park has a Google places listing, it's full of content, the NAP all matches up. Its a stronger website. Boreham House isn't any closer to the centroid than Quendon Park Just got me struggling this one

Ranking not improving
Our site is now 3 months old (although the domain is older) but rankings don't seem to be improving at all. We've got some good quality relevant links coming into the site, and the content is unique and often updated. Is there something holding the site back? Am I being impatient? the site is www.help-my-mobility.org Thanks.

Sudden drop in ranking google.co.uk ranking
Anyone else had any sudden drops in rankings this week? Is there an update going on? One of my primary keywords has dropped from 6th to 49th in the google.co.uk search results. Not in webmaster tools to flag an issue. I have downloaded the links from webmaster and it does look if some content has been scraped and then linked back to us from a large number of sites that we have never sort links from. I have upload the google disavow link tool. Only one keyword appears to be effected not all of them? Any ideas? Thanks

Different domains
Firstly apologies for the very brief question as I am mainly looking for your thoughts as opposed to specific help about a specific problem. I am working on a site which has two sepreate domains and within one domain, two sub domains. The two different sites both havea high page rank, PR6 each, one is the corporate site and the other is the company blog. There are also two sub domains within the corporate site, again both domains have high pr and tons of content. My question is would it be better to consolidate all the assets under one domain or is it better to keep the sites sepreate, from an seo perspective that is.
