Multilingual website - Url problem (sitemap)
-
At this moment our website both uses the language in the url like "en" and localizes the url itself ("books" in english and "boeken" in dutch). Because of the history of making our website multilingual we have a system that takes the browser language for the localization if the url doesn't contain a language like "en".
This means:
- www.test.com/books = browser language
- www.test.com/en/books = english language
- www.test.com/boeken = browser language
- www.test.com/nl/boeken = dutch language
Now for the sitemap this makes it a little troublesome for me because which hreflang is used for which url?
1) The first thing I thought of was using x-default for all urls that get the language of the browser.
<code><url><loc>http://www.test.com/books</loc></url></code>
But as you can see we now got 2 times x-default.
2) Another solution I thought of was just use the localization of the url to determine the language like:
<code><url><loc>http://www.test.com/books</loc></url></code>
But now we got 2 of each language for the same page.
3) The last solution I thought of was removing links without a language in the url (except for the homepage, which will still have an x-default) like:
<code><url><loc>http://www.test.comen/books</loc></url></code>
But for this solution I need to put 301's at pages that are "deleted" and also need to change the system to 301 to the right page. Although the last point isn't really a problem I'm kind of worried that I will lose some of the "seo points" with a 301. (When we changed our domain in the past we had a bad experience with the 301 of our old domain)
What do you think would be the best solution for SEO? Or do you have any other suggestions or solutions I haven't thought of.

The best way to go about this is to keep the URLs with the language in the structure. Redirect (301) the ones that don't have it to the ones that do.
However, it sounds like that causes a problem. If the above isn't a possibility, use a canonical from the non-language URL to the one with it. Then do your HREFLANG in sitemaps, and only use the URLs with the language tag in the sitemaps. You can also do the coding on the page, just make sure the HREFLANG tags are not on the non-language pages.
- Example URL: http://www.test.com/boeken would have a canonical tag that points to http://www.test.com/nl/boeken
- Only http://www.test.com/nl/boeken is listed in the sitemaps
- OR Only http://www.test.com/nl/boeken has HREFLANG tags. http://www.test.com/boeken would only have the canonical.
That should solve your problem.

From their support page (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/189077?hl=en) when you're combining region plus language you'll want to do this:
For example, you may have specific URLs for English speakers in Ireland (en-ie), Canada (en-ca), and Australia (en-au), but want all other English speakers to see your generic English (en) page, and everyone else to see the homepage. In this case you should specify the generic English-language (en) page for searchers in, say, the UK. You can annotate this cluster of pages using a Sitemap file or using HTML link tags like this:
That way you can even have a situation like nl-en or vice versa. I'd use 302s for redirecting based on conditional things like browser settings. Cheers!

Hreflang alternate as single-hop 301 - is this actually a problem?
First, this is not a question about whether 301 redirects pass page rank. My question is that if your hreflang alternative page URL is a 301 redirect*, are there any downsides. In all cases with our situation, the 301 redirect is single-hop and working. Tools, such as SEMRush seem to flag this as a non-canonical hreflang error, but I'm not able to find any cases where Google has suggested a redirecting hreflang is a problem. I'd appreciate any information on this issue before we invest extra time on a large international site. *In Drupal, there are scenarios where it's all but impossible to avoid having a 301 redirect in your hreflang alternate URL without significant custom work.

Geolocation issue: Google not displaying the correct url in the SERP's
Hello, Im running a multi-country domain with this structure: domain.com/ar/
International SEO | | EstebanCervi
domain.com/mx/
domain.com/cl/
etc I also have: domain.com/int/ for x-default
domain.com/category/ does a 301 redirect through IP geo-location to the correspondent url, example if your IP is from Mexico, then you got redirected to domain.com/mx/category/ hreflang is correct. webmaster tool geo-location is correct. Example of the issue Im facing right now: When users from Chile do a keyword search in Google Chile, the domain ranks well but the URL that appears in the SERP is the /mx/ version, or the /int/ version or any other country version. Other times is the /cl/ version. The same happens for all the users / countries / keywords. I need to understand what Im doing wrong, because Google is not displaying in the SERP's the correct URL version for the country of the user who is doing the search. Thank you so much! I will appreciate your ideas. PS: I think I should try to change the 301 to a 302 redirect, or completely remove those redirects. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!0 -
SEO Strategy for international website with similar content
Hello, If a company is in different countries and has same content in most of the countries does it hurt SEO? For Ex. fibaro.com is the website that I am researching and I have seen the indexed pages to be about 40,000 however there is not much content on it. On further inspection I noticed that for every country the sub folder is different. So for us it will be fibaro.com/us/motion-sensor and for Europe fibaro.com/en/motion-sensor. Now both of these pages have same content on it and the company is in 86 countries so imagine the amount of duplicate content it has. Does anybody have any ideas on what should be an ideal way to approach this? Thanks

For a website in portuguese what would you use? pt.domain.com, br.domain.com or domain.com.br
Hello We are a company with a website in several languages, one of them is portuguese. Our market is 2 times bigger in Brazil than in Portugal, but obviously Brazil has more potential in the future. In domain.com we have our main site in English. What would you use? pt.domain.com, br.domain.com or domain.com.br? In the first case, it means just portuguese, in the second Brazil but it is not geolocalized, and in the third, you are almost ignoring Portugal users... Duplicating content, doesn't seem to make sense... The content is basically international, so it is just the language that matters. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Best practice for WPML, Yoast and sitemap for google
Hi Mozzers, I have a wordpress installation and work on a hotel website in three different languages: English, German, Spanish. In order to manage each language as a regional or global website, I started to give the website the names like: de.hotelnamen.com, es.hotelname.com (Hotel is in Costa Rica, maybe cr.hotelname.com is even better???) and hotelname.com. The possibility of WPML to manage my multilingual blog is good and the Yoast plugin gives me the sitemaps I want for each language. Because it is a hotel I have to have a global page which should serve the world if they try to find the hotel, right? That's why i put hotelname.com as a global page in English and registered the sitemaps and page on my webmaster account in countries as "not listed". For de.hotelname.com I choose Germany on another webmaster account and for es.hotelname.com Costa Rica (the country in which the Hotel is located). Unfortunately, after three month I don't receive good results with that methode. The hotelname.com adress is always the page which comes up in all search engines. I my tactic wrong? Where is my mistake? I would like to have hotelname.com in the rankings of all search engines beside of google Germany because for the German market I have the German version. Same in Costa Rica. Thanks for some ideas...

Best Practice for International Website with Two Versions
I have a client in the medical industry, and the company's product has been approved in various countries in Europe yet is awaiting approval in the US. That means we can share certain information in some countries that we cannot share in the US. Therefore, we plan to use an initial landing page that will ask what country the user is in (using a drop-down list to choose from if not located in the US) and then push him or her to the appropriate version of the site. Here is my question: What is the best way to ensure search engines can crawl the site beyond this landing page? Thanks for your time.
