We own discount banner printing and we are trying to rank 1 for pvc banners or vinyl banners and cannot understand for example how the below is correct, we did suffer a link penalty years ago but we fixed this and the domain has some good links (more and better quality than the sites above us) and cannot understand how we rank below most of the sites above us?
If we type on for example pvc banners we get
http://www.bannershop.co.uk/cats/pvc_banners.htm
https://www.hfe-signs.co.uk/banners.php
http://bannerprintingandroid.co.uk/pvc-banners/
http://www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk/banners/vinyl-pvc-banners.html (our website)
And if we type in vinyl banners we get
http://www.vistaprint.co.uk/banners.aspx
http://www.bigvaluebanners.co.uk/
http://vinylbannersprinting.co.uk/
http://www.discountdisplays.co.uk/html/vinyl_banners.html

Hi Bob,
You seem to know what you're talking about and have some pretty decent rankings. I think you need to start with conducting a comprehensive competitor analysis looking at both on-site factors and off-site factors (ie, backlinks). This will help you to identify opportunities where you can really get the edge on your competitors.
Aleyda Solis did a great infographic and post about this very topic which I highly recommend - https://moz.com/blog/illustrated-seo-competitive-analysis-workflow.
With Vista Print being a huge company, you might be hard-pushed to rank first but I would definitely spend some time to look at their link profile as well as the other top competitors to see how they're approaching their link building strategies.

There's not always a clear science around that but usually a penalized site never gets back to its prior shine, or at least it will take you a lot of time, that's why is it somewhat better to have a slower growth than risk anyway a penalty.
Regarding your examples, I see that pvc banners query returns a lot of otpimized results on that query. I don't know which link you may have removed but looking at backlinks pointing to http://www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk/banners/vinyl-pvc-banners.html
in OSE I see that:- one third of your referrals are spammy domains
- you are using quite alot of keyword rich anchors which are actually a good signal for link schemes to google
try to be as natural and possible and consider that you'll need to work more to get google trust than some other clean websites.

Are we being Penalized? Can someone Assess Please!
We have two eCommerce sites. Both the sites can broadly be divided into 3 pages 1. Home Page. 2. Detail Page. 3 Category Pages (Altogether our site has approx 3 Million pages each) These are the site URLs http://bit.ly/9tRZIi - This is targeted for USA Audience http://bit.ly/P8MxPR - This is targeted for UK audience The .com domain which was launched earlier in 2011 is doing okay with decent organic traffic Precautions Taken: To avoid content being duplicate on both the sites we are using: a. Geo-targeting through Google webmaster tools b. rel=alternate tag on printsasia.co.uk Problem 1. The .co.uk domain which was launched in May 2012 started gaining organic traffic slowly but then suddenly dropped to almost 0 after September 18. 2. When we use operator site:printsasia.co.uk and apply a filter on past week/month we don't see any result. While when same operator used for "any time" we see some results. 3. According to webmaster tool, Google has indexed 95% of our URLs in the sitemap Our concern: Is our UK site penalized for some reasons? If yes, what could be the possible reason(s) for this penalty and possible steps to get out of it? Would request if experts here can review our site and help us.

Accidental Noindex/Mis-Canonicalisation - Please help!
Hi everybody, I was hoping somebody might be able to help as this is an issue my team and I have never come across before. A client of ours recently migrated to a new site design. 301 redirects were properly implemented and the transition was fairly smooth. However, we realised soon after that a sub-section of pages had either one or both of the following errors: They featured a canonical tag pointing to the wrong page They featured the 'meta noindex' tag After realising this, both the canonicals and the noindex tags were immediately removed. However, Google crawled the site while these were in place and the pages subsequently dropped out of Google's index. We re-submitted the affected pages to Google's index and used WMT to 'Fetch' the pages as Google. We have also since 'allowed' the pages in the robots.txt file as an extra measure. We found that the pages which just had the noindex tag were immediately re-indexed, while the pages which featured the noindex tag and which were mis-canonicalised are still not being re-indexed. Can anyone think of a reason why this might be the case? One of the pages which featured both tags was one of our most important organic landing pages, so we're eager to resolve this. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Web Developer, Web Designer, SEO Person...what do I need?
I was short on fund for my company when I set up my website. I used a company that was just starting to get into website design and they charged very little. Now that I'm starting to pursue different forms of SEO it has come to my attention (because of SEOmoz reporting) that my website wasn't coded correctly on the backend. For instance the website sometimes uses a trailing slash in the the URL and sometimes it doesn't. This redirects it and creates a duplicate content issue. I need to find someone to audit/evaluate (I guess that's the word) the backend of my website and reprogram it where there are problems. I need to make sure my site is set up in the best way possible to be crawled by search engines. What type of firm do I talk to? A website designer or web developer? Or do I talk to a SEO person who also can code the backend of websites? My website is www.capitolshine.com

Help diagnosing a complex SEO issue
Good evening SEOMoz. A series events, in close succession are making it somewhat difficult for me to diagnose a cause of fluctuations in traffic. Please excuse some of the stupid moves I made, but desperation got the better of me. One of my most beloved websites was hit by Panda on January 18th. Pretty sure it was due to a CMS bug that is now fixed. The website site started to show great signs of recovery from April 19th - Panda 3.5. I'm going to be as explicit as possible with the traffic for the days that follow. Traffic was stable previously. April 20th +10%. April 21st +5%. April 22nd +5%. (half way recovered, also the first real fluctuation since the site was hit in Jan). Due to the looming over-optimisation penalty, on the 22nd I changed the titles to unoptimise them a little. (fear is a dangerous thing at times). April 23rd -10%. April 24th -10% April 25th onwards, pretty much levelled out. The websites I've seen hit by Penguin, lost around 40% of their traffic, very steeply on 24th and 25th April. So the drops aren't in keeping with my experience of Penguin. But they do coincide perfectly with the massive site-wide title change. I've haven't read anything definitive about a penalty for changing titles too often, but for obvious reasons, it makes sense. The drop seems terribly soon after changing titles, but the site is very heavily indexed. It's also worth mentioning that I did changed the titles BACK, incase it was purely the fact the titles had been slightly de-optimised, that caused the drop. I waited until May 5th. This had no positive nor negative effect. It's a lot to take in but I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm feeling a little bamboozled looking at all the figures. There was of course the above the fold update on the 19th Jan, but lets ignore that as we've only ever had a max 1 ad per page, most pages have none.
