Someone asked me: What's the latest in SEO?
-
Hi, I'm wondering how others would respond to this question. "What's the latest in SEO?" Someone random asked me this on a plane that does not know much about digital marketing, but has someone else do for their business. I told them the google algortithm is constantly changing and it's always new, that there are about 500 changes a year (thought that was close to right) and then got down to some basic principals. I'm asking how you might answer as I could see someone asking me this within my organization as well. Thanks for any tips on a great answer or resources.

Hi there
I tend to focus on:
Moz
SEO by the Sea
Search Engine Roundtable
SEO TheoryAll of the above have great, in-depth articles and have genuinely helped me and kept me up to date. I also love participating in this Q+A because it helps me think through my own processes and also gives great insight; I would suggest to both you and your colleague to jump in, or at least pay attention to the questions asked here and the answers.
Kissmetrics had a great expert "what to expect in 2015" article you can read here, and Search Engine Watch had a pretty good list here as well.
Depending on who you talk to you will get different answers. I would focus on providing the best possible web experience you can on multiple levels:
- Website layout and performance
- Content development and distribution
- Have a deep understanding of your audience
- Understand the mobile web experience
- Know your brand and align your goals with your audience goals
This is just the tip of the iceberg and incorporates so much. If you focus on the above with honest intention and knowing best practices, algorithms are your friend. Moz has a great education section to help get you started on multiple fronts.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Does product environment have impact on main website's SEO
We have two environments - product, where login is necessary and where the customers are working. We also have there our help desk, Q&A and knowledge base. Pretty sophisticated page regarding information on a specific topic. We also have our main page where we promote our products, company and events, etc. Main page is www.example.com, where product environment is login.example.com . Does this product environment have an impact on my main page's SEO?

Local SEO - 'Near me' phrases
Hi all, I would like to start works to give our website more visibility for 'near me' searches for x2 of our services. We have 130+ stores throughout the UK and would like to rank if someone in i.e. Leeds was to search 'pawnbroker near me'. Please can you advise the best way to achieve this? Do I need to add scheme mark up? If so, does this go on the service page? Or do I need to place on individual store pages? Any help much appreciated! Kind regards, Jack

Migrating online store to subdomain using shopify and effects on seo and energy down the road for seo
I'm looking for some clarity... Looking at using Shopify for an existing online store that we have to migrate. Setting up the store with shopify means we will be using a subdomain such as shop.mywebsite.com instead of mywebsite.com/shop. The following are points to consider when responding The client currently has an online store, however it's a proprietary shopping store and CMS that has since gone defunct and they need to migrate to an alternative in order to survive online against new CMS systems that allow the site and its content to be better optimized. There is a lot of existing SEO done on the current site that we don't want to loose PR on. There is roughly 2000 products Client has a fixed budget, dealing with checkout issues, custom work and various other "bugs" seems to be easier controlled with Shopify...thus budget can be used more on content/strategy and migration We want to run the main site in Wordpress and are wanting to use Shopify since it supports a gateway, has great features and seems like it would allow us to get more bang for the buck and can focus more on the main site and content strategy and drive traffic to the subdomain store if needed Or main concern is the effort of migrating 2000+ products to shopify and the traffic and PR it gives the current site will have a negative effect on the main domain itself. Should we really be considering this path? The domain is diveidc.com One main benefit to the subdomain is the ability to clearly segment products from the service portion of the site in the analytics and focus 2 clear strategies and track it in a very defined manner. We're really on the fence with this...any thoughts are welcome.
