Redirecting old mobile site
-
Hi All,
Trying to figure out the best option here. I have a website that used to utilize a separate mobile site (m.xyz.com) but now utilizes responsive design.
What is the best way to deal with that old mobile site? De-index? 301 redirect back to the main site in the rare case someone finds the m. site somewhere?
THanks!
Ricky

Agreed. Used 301s to redirect the old m. pages to their www. counterparts. This way, not only do users get redirected automatically to the proper page with the correct content, but if there is any link equity, it gets passed along as well.
Key point, do not redirect all of your m. pages to the www home page, that would be bad. Also, bonus free advice. If you are setting up global 301 redirects, go ahead and do some additional 301 cleanup in several areas.

If your site is indexed in Google with the www subdomain included (i.e. http://www.website.com), make sure that the non www urls for all pages (i.e. http://website.com) 301 redirect to the www version. This needs to be a page to page redirect, not everything to the home page. Reverse this if your website by default uses the non www subdomain.

Likewise if you ever used https or moved from http to https, 301 page to page everything.

If you have anything where you have
http://www.website.com is the same as http://www.website.com/index.html or http://www.website.com/folder/index.html etc 301 all those "index.htm" type urls to the folder ending in the slash.
The idea here is to remove duplicates and have the 301s to do that.
When you get all this done, run a spider (I like Screaming Frog or Botify) to see if you have any navigation, sitemap or other internal links on your site that are 301ing. Try and think about anywhere else that you control that you might accidentally be pointing to old URLs (rss feed possibly? Your homepage in your Facebook account? etc) You may be pointing (accidentally or on purpose) to old URLs and want to update those. That is another signal to Google that you are not using the old URLs and pay attention to the 301. I have found issues with Google still reporting a 301 in Search Console and it was because I was still pointing to it in my navigation.
Cheers!

Hi there
I would redirect the old mobile URLs to their main URL counterparts. The site is now responsive, so redirecting to the main site relevant pages will format to the screen of the device the user is using. I would also make sure you update your sitemap.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

No-Indexing on Ecommerce site
Hi Our site has a lot of similar/lower quality product pages which aren't a high priority - so these probably won't get looked at in detail to improve performance as we have over 200,000 products . Some of them do generate a small amount of revenue, but an article I read suggested no-indexing pages which are of little value to improve site performance & overall structure. I wanted to find out if anyone had done this and what results they saw? Will this actually improve rankings of our focus areas? It makes me a bit nervous to just block pages so any advice is appreciated 🙂

If you do 302 redirect then change to 301 redirect do you lose all link juice?
Hello everyone, I was wondering if you could help me with understanding the following story: A website has been moved from its HTTP version to a HTTPS version. The SEO manager has advised developers that they needed to do 301 redirects. However, in the end, 302 redirects have been put in place instead. Now, 301s should be put in place ASAP. The million dollar question is: has the website lost all of its link juice already given the nature of the redirects? Also, does it depend on whether Google has indexed the new 302 pages or does it depend on something else? Many thanks!

Can I undo 301 redirects to purchase site
A website I am thinking of buying has 301 redirected all pages on his site to one page that explains the site is closing down. If I tell him to change the 301 to 302s will I be able to recover the old pages on the site and keep the authority, rankings and link power of the old pages and not the "Closing page"? Is all i have to do is undo the 301 redirects and everything will go back to how the site was before the 301s were in place? Or will I lose all the link power on individual pages because they already transferred to the "Closing page"? Thanks!

(Australia) Changing .net.au to .com.au - web dev is refusing to do a 301 redirect and wants to run two sites?
After years using a .net.au site, my client has purchased the .com.au version of the same domain. I've now set up a new, responsive website using a wordpress template with new content, but used a similar page structure. I've asked their web developer to now do a 301 permanent redirect on each old page from .net.au site to it's new .com.au page, but he has refused, saying it would be bad for long term SEO. Instead, he says they should run both sites (which I thought would cause duplicate content issues). Both domains are hosted with the same company. I thought as long as the 301 redirects were done on a page by page basis, there were no issues? I'm no SEO expert, (which he claims to be), so I just wanted to get another opinion on what best practice would be in this instance.

Lost all ranking after site-wide 301 redirect
Hi all I did a complete site-wide 310 redirect about 3 weeks ago for a site that had consistently been in Pos 1-5 for my targeted keyword ("low glycemic foods"). I changed the domain from low-glycemic-foods-org to low-glycemic-diet.com because I thought that was a more appropriate title and thru my readings I believed that if I carefully followed the recommended procedures I would quickly regain my SERP. Webmaster tools is showing that I have over 800 inbound links - many from very trustworthy sources including .edu, etc BUT my home page is nowhere to be found for the keyword search "low glycemic diet". My Seomoz onpage SEO score is an "A" Any enlightenment would be much appreciated.

Load balanced Site
Our client ecommerce site load from 3 different servers using load balancing. abc.com : IP: 222.222.222 Abc.com: IP: 111.111.111 For testing purpose 111.111.111 also point to beta.abc.com Now google crawling site beta.abc.com If we block beta.abc.com using robots.txt it will block google bot also , since beta.abc.com is really abc.com I know its confusing but I been trying to figure out. Ofcourse I can ask my dev to remove beta.abc.com make a seperate code and block it using .htaccess

Multiple retail sites redirected to one
Recently our company has acquired several high ranking retail websites which sell only our brand of products. We are now considering consolidating all our online sales from these different retail sites to be direct to our main website. The question we have is how do we do this without negatively affecting SEO for these high ranking retail sites?
