I am looking into a .htacess file for a site I look after and have noticed that the urls are all 301 redirecting from a none slash directory to a trailing slashed directory/folders.

      e.g. www.domain.com/folder gets 301 redirected to www.domain.com/folder/

Will this do much harm and reduce the effect on the page and any links pointing to the site be lessened?

Secondly I am not sure what part of my htaccess is causing the redirect.

      RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.domain.co.uk [NC]

      RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$
      RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.domain.co.uk/$1 [L,R,NE]

      RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^./index.php
      RewriteRule ^(.
      )index.php$ /$1 [R=301,L]

or could a wordpress ifmodule be causing the problem?

      Any info would be apreciated.

          Hi Tim,

I was literally working on this exact issue with a client yesterday. There is absolutely nothing about this to worry about. Although auditing programs like Screaming Frog will bring this up as an "issue", a manual look reveals nothing to be concerned about.

The only issue you might have is, as CleverPhD pointed out, if you have any internal linking that might be sent to the "incorrect" url, that would be something to fix. Otherwise, this is totally fine.

          Best regards,

          Rob

Agreed.  Keep it.  My only other question would be - do you have any internal links on your site that link to the non-slashed version of the folder?  Get those fixed/cleaned up wherever possible.   Your Moz crawl report should find any of those for you.

This is default behavior and you should keep it. It won't harm your rankings at all. I am not sure where the redirect is occurring in your install, but I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Here is a write-up on it from Google.

URL too long. Shorten and redirect, or leave alone?

MOZ is indicating that i have several URLs that are too long. Should I shorten the URLs and redirect the long URLs to the new, shorter, URL? Or should i leave them alone, as I've been reading to avoid redirects.

Canonical homepage link uses trailing slash while default homepage uses no trailing slash, will this be an issue?

Hello, 1st off, let me explain my client in this case uses BigCommerce, and I don't have access to the backend like most other situations. So I have to rely on BG to handle certain issues. I'm curious if there is much of a difference using domain.com/ as the canonical url while BG currently is redirecting our domain to domain.com. I've been using domain.com/ consistently for the last 6 months, and since we switches stores on Friday, this issue has popped up and has me a bit worried that we'll loose somehow via link juice or overall indexing since this could confuse crawlers. Now some say that the domain url is fine using / or not, as per - https://moz.com/community/q/trailing-slash-and-rel-canonical But I also wanted to see what you all felt about this. What says you?

Robots txt. in page with 301 redirect

We currently have a a series of help pages that we would like to disallow from our robots txt. The thing is that these help pages are located in our old website, which now has a 301 redirect to current site. Which is the proper way to go around? 1- Add the pages we want to disallow to the robots.txt of the new website? 2- Break the redirect momentarily and add the pages to the robots.txt of the old one? Thanks

Simple 301 redirect a subfolder to another subfolder

                Hi, I have a number of sub-folders that I have to move, each of which contains a number of files. subfolder A has files a, b & c subfolder B has files d, e & f
                subfolder C has files g, h & i A, B & C folders need to be X, Y & Z Will the following work? RewriteRule ^subfolder-A/* http://www.domain.com/subfolder-X/ [R=301,L]
                RewriteRule ^subfolder-B/* http://www.domain.com/subfolder-Y/ [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^subfolder-C/* http://www.domain.com/subfolder-Z/ [R=301,L] will this result in visitors to http://www.domain.com/subfolder-B/f.html being redirected to http://www.domain.com/subfolder-Y/f.html? All on the same domain. in reality we are talking hundreds of sub folders and thousands of files so we don't want to have to reference every file individually in the htaccess. Thanks

Loss of search engine positions after 301 redirect - what went wrong?!?

Hi Guys After adhering to the On Page optimisation suggestions given by SEOmoz, we redirected some of old urls to new ones.  We set 301 redirects from the old pages to new on a page by page basis but our search engine ranking subsequently fell off the radar and lost PR. We confirmed redirection with fiddler and it shows 301 permanent redirect on every page as expected. To manage redirection using a common code logic we executed following: In Http module, using “rewrite path” we route “all old page requests” to a page called “redirect.aspx? oldpagename =[oldpagename]”.  This happens at server side. In redirect.aspx we are redirecting from old page to new page using 301 permanent redirect. In the browser, when old page is requested, it will 301 redirect to new page. In hope we and others can learn from our mistakes - what did we do wrong ?!? Thanks in advance. Dave - www.paysubsonline.com

Drupal URL Aliases vs 301 Redirects + Do URL Aliases create duplicates?

Hi all! I have just begun work on a Drupal site which heavily uses the URL Aliases feature. I fear that it is creating duplicate links. For example:: we have http://www.URL.com/index.php and http://www.URL.com/ In addition we are about to switch a lot of links and want to keep the search engine benefit. Am I right in thinking URL aliases change the URL, while leaving the old URL live and without creating search engine friendly redirects such as 301s? Thanks for any help! Christian

                301 Redirect & Cloaking

HEllo~~~~ People. I have a question regarding on cloaking. I will be really greatful if you can help me with question. I have a site www.example.com and it is targeting for multi countries. So I use sub directories for targeting multi countries. e.g. www.example.com/us/ www.example.com/de/ www.example.com/hk/ ....... so on and on. Therefore, when people type www.example.com, I use IP delivery to send users to each coutries. Here is my question. I use 301 redirect for IP delivery, which means when user enter www.example.com, my site read user's IP and send them to right country site by 301 redirect. In this case, is there any possibility that Google considers it as cloaking? Please people.... share me some ideas and thoughs.
