Should HTML be included in the structured data (schema) markup for the main body content?
-
Lately we have been applying structured data to the main content body of our client's websites. Our lead developer had a good question about HTML however.
In JSON-LD, what is the proper way to embed content from a data field that has html markup (i.e. p, ul, li, br, tags) into mainContentOfPage. Should the HTML be stripped our or escaped somehow?
I know that apply schema to the main body content is helpful for the Googlebot. However should we keep the HTML? Any recommendations or best practices would be appreciated.
Thanks!

As long as you're using the same Schema in both places I don't think it would hurt to have them both - JSON-LD in the HTML header and as structured data markup in the HTML where that entity exists on the page.
You can play around with JSON-LD here to see what it would look like:

Rosemary,
People have a hard time with these questions because there can be more than one answer.
--The answer is rough but I hope it makes sense.--
I'd say it should be removed, although the best way to use that markup might be to mark up the actual html that is displayed rather than duplicating all of the "main content" inside of a JSON schema tag.
Does it make sense for the JSON to look like below when you have the content already present on the page and could mark it up in the traditional tag format?

<scripttype="application ld+json"=""></scripttype="application>

|
| |"url": "https://www.example.com/",
|
| |"name" : "Example Group",
|
| |"alternateName" : "Example Enviro Group",
|
| |"potentialAction": {
|
| |"@type": "SearchAction",
|
| |"target": "https://www.example.com/?s={search_term_string}",
|
| |"query-input": "required name=search_term_string"
|

"mainContentOfPage":"
Lorem ipsum metus ullamcorper viverra. Aliquam
Curabitur at lacus et quam scelerisque consequat. Vestibulum semper et ex quis commodo. Vestibulum lacinia ultricies neque et facilisis. Pellentesque feugiat luctus diam, et mollis elit posuere posuere. Nulla mattis libero lectus, at consequat sapien semper non. Duis lacinia mollis eros, in pulvinar enim interdum ac."

| | |Let me know if that helps... or not! Sorry for the layout issues, I think you will still get it.

What should my main sitemap URL be?
Hi Mozzers - regarding the URL of a website's main website: http://example.com/sitemap.xml is the normal way of doing it but would it matter if I varied this to: http://example.com/mainsitemapxml.xml or similar? I can't imagine it would matter but I have never moved away from the former before - and one of my clients doesn't want to format the URL in that way. What the client is doing is actually quite interesting - they have the main sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap.xml - that redirects to the sitemap file which is http://example.com/sitemap (with no xml extension) - might that redirect and missing xml extension the redirected to sitemap cause an issue? Never come across such a setup before. Thanks in advance for your feedback - Luke

Schema question
Hi all, We have two Trustpilot schemas (Local Business) on our web pages ( One on desktop / one on mobile) but we are finding that it is not updating the number of reviews in the search results. When using the tool : https://developers.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool/ , the test results are coming back ok. I have two ideas as to why it may not be working; 1) The duplication of the schema code is causing issues 2) We had to change the html code for all of our 50+ backend pages using a search&replace WordPress plugin to save a vast amount of time. Maybe this is plugin related? The fact that the google testing tool gives back positive results adds to the confusion. I test both of the theorised issues to see if it provides a fixes. Can anyone shed some further light on this issue? Is there something obvious I am missing? All responses are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Tom p.s. Recommended URL Structure
Hello, We are currently adding a new section of content on our site related to Marketing and more specifically 'Digital Marketing' (research reports, trend studies, etc). Over time (several months, or 1-3 years) we will add more 'general' marketing content. My question is which of the following URL structures makes more sense from an SEO perspective (and how best to quantify the benefit of one over another): www.mysite.com/marketing/digital/research/... www.mysite.com/digital-marketing/research/.. Thanks, Mike

Generating Rich Snippets without Structured Data
I noticed something in Google search results today that I can't explain. Any help would be appreciated. I performed a real estate based search and the top result featured a rich snippet showcasing the following... Address Price Bd/Ba
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | RyanOD
912 Garden District Dr #17. Charlotte, NC 28202 $179,990 3 / 2
222 S Caldwell St #1602. Charlotte, NC 28202 $389,238 2 / 2&1/2 However, when I visit the page associated with this information, there is no Schema to be found. In fact, the page is, for the most part, just a large table listing homes on the market. The table headings are Address, Price, and Bd/Ba. Is it common for Google to use table based data to generate rich snippets? What is the best way to influence this? In the absence of Schema (as the page we are talking about has no Schema implementation), does Google default to table data? Has anyone seen this behavior before and, if so, can you point me to it? EDIT: I've now come across a few other examples where the information is not in a table, but rather in divs. Why are such sites (you can find some by searching for "[ZIPCODE] real estate") getting this treatment?0 -
How to Fix Duplicate Page Content?
Our latest SEOmoz crawl reports 1138 instances of "duplicate page content." I have long been aware that our duplicate page content is likely a major reason Google has de-valued our Web store. Our duplicate page content is the result of the following: 1. We sell audio books and use the publisher's description (narrative) of the title. Google is likely recognizing the publisher as the owner / author of the description and our description as duplicate content. 2. Many audio book titles are published in more than one format (abridged, unabridged CD, and/or unabridged MP3) by the same publisher so the basic description on our site would be the same at our Web store for each format = more duplicate content at our Web store. Here's are two examples (one abridged, one unabridged) of one title at our Web store. Kill Shot - abridged Kill Shot - unabridged How much would the body content of one of the above pages have to change so that a SEOmoz crawl does NOT say the content is duplicate?

Anyway, you can help me out with forming a rich snippet for this hotel?

New folder structure
We are in the process of relaunching one of our website's that will use a totally need folder structure. Previously we used mydomain.com/content/country/region/city/district/hotel_name/ Now we are changing to make the URL shorter, more precise - since we are using a new CMS, to be mydomain.com/gb_Hotel-Name/ My question is currently we've in the region of 10,000 pages indexed in Google. So we are going to have to create 301 permanent redirects from the old URLs to the new URLs. From your previous experience, is this the correct way of approaching the task.
