Unable to fully see full spectrum of links built on some backlink checkers
-
We have built various links in directories and blogs to our website. We can clearly see that these links have been established on these websites. Some we have built well over 6 months ago.
However, upon using a range of tools such as Moz Open Explorer, Cognitive SEO Backlink Explorer and SEM Rush's Backlink Checker, we cannot see in any of these backlink checking tools the full spectrum of links we know we have built displayed. In instances of using these tools, we are only seeing a very small sample of links that we have built.
Our question here is then threefold:
- Why is it that a lot of these tools don't pick up the links we know we have built?
- Does google eventually see all the links we have built? Or does it suffer from the same problem as backlink checkers, unable to identify all built links?
- Is there a backlink checker that is throughly comprehensive, or close to, in its ability to identify all links? We have heard good things about Ahrefs and would love to hear people's thoughts here.
-
Thanks Jordan and Tawny! That is a good idea to check in GWT for link profiles of our sites that we want to check. We would love to find also though a link checking tool that is quite comprehensive. Thanks Tawny for your recommendation to check out Ahrefs. It is a tool we have trailed and do find quite effective!

Hi there! Tawny from Moz's Help team here. Thanks for writing in with a great question!
Since most backlink checkers don't have the massive resources that a search engine like Google has, it's unlikely that you'll be able to see all your backlinks using any one of them exclusively. For instance, Open Site Explorer is limited to showing you up to 10,000 backlinks at a time (any more than that and you'd need to use the Moz API), and from those, we can only show the top 25 links from each unique linking root domain. If you're not seeing all the backlinks you know you've earned using a backlink checker, but you do see it indexed in the search engines, it's probably because the search engine has used different means of finding those links. It's unlikely that search engines will have the same difficulty finding your backlinks as various backlink checkers will.
Moz is constantly working to improve the shape of our index - choosing which pages to crawl and which to ignore. Our goal is to build the most "Google-shaped" index we can, representative of what Google keeps in their main index and counts as valuable/important links that influence rankings. We make tweaks aimed at this goal each index cycle, but not always perfectly (you can see that in 2015, we crawled a ton more domains, but found that many of those were, in fact, low quality and not valuable, thus we stopped). Moz's crawlers can crawl the web extremely fast and efficiently, but our processing time prevents us from building as large an index as we'd like and as large as our competitors (you will see more links represented in both Ahrefs and Majestic, two competitors to Mozscape that we recommend). Moz calculates valuable metrics that these others do not (like PA/DA, MozRank, MozTrust, Spam Score, etc), but these metrics require hundreds of hours of processing and that time scales linearly with the size of the index, which means we have to stay smaller in order to calculate them.
I hope this helps! If you have follow-up questions, feel free to write in to help@moz.com!

This may be a silly question but have you checked in Google Webmaster tool's? I have noticed for some clients I work on Moz may not always show all the backlinks but it is still a good starting point to see if you have any questionable links pointing to your domain. Whereas Search Console or Webmaster tools gives a more complete breakdown of all my backlinks.
If you have Search Console set up download all your backlinks and compare it the other backlink checking tools you have.

I want to know about the Impact of Do-follow backlinks and No-follow backlinks for increasing DA.
Have Do-follow backlinks and No-Follow backlinks same value to increase Domain Authority in Moz? Recently, I have created 290 profile backlinks which was do-follow. But from yesterday I have seen all backlinks are no-follow now according to the decision of sites' owners. My site's DA has already increased up to 35. Will this DA fall gradually from now? Apart from it, if I have created same backlinks for my another site; will my DA be 35? Please try to clarify it. My site is: Homeworkpaper.net Thanks. Waiting for your valuable answer from Moz official.

Why does OSE show different link equity for homepage with and without trailing slash?
Hi all, I am working with a developer who believes OSE (Open Site Explorer) is flawed. His reasoning is that OSE shows completely different link equity and domain authority for these two URLs [company name is purposely withheld]: http://www.mydomain.com/us/ and http://www.mydomain.com/us NOTE: http://www.mydomain.com/us has been properly 301-redirecting to http://www.mydomain.com/us/ for years. The developer's argument is that the URL that is being 301-redirected shouldn't have any link equity at all, therefore OSE is flawed. Here is the response I would like to give him. Please feel free to poke holes, provide feedback or flat out correct me if I am wrong: Dear inquisitive developer, Any URL that is being linked to by another site that has link equity will get link equity passed to it. This is true even if the URL is a page that doesn't exist. What it can't do (if it doesn't exist) is then pass that link equity on to another page. Moz's OSE is showing separate link equity for the two versions of this URL because other sites have linked to both versions. The fact that one 301-redirects to the other is good and ensures that link equity from one is passing to the preferred URL. The 301-redirect does not, however, remove link equity from the first URL, but rather passes the existing link equity from one to the other. Consequently, Moz's OSE is not flawed, but rather is displaying the link equity of one URL that is benefiting the other via a 301-redirect. Sincerely, Dana

None of the pages crawled contain an email address or links to a social profile...
I'm trying to reduce the amount of spam flags our website has using the Open Site Explorer tool. Currently, we have 2/17 flags based on: Large Site with Few Links - We found very few sites linking to this site, considering its size No Contact Info - None of the pages crawled contain an email address or links to a social profile The "few links" can be ignored, we're working on this. We don't have a visible email address on the website and we don't particularly want one. We prefer customers to fill out our online form or to call us. Moz say "none of the pages crawled contain an email address OR links to a social profile" - we do have social buttons on every page of the website, but these are official Facebook and Twitter buttons that are rendered with Javascript, so don't actually appear in the page source on load. If we replace these with actual links to our pages using Facebook and Twitter icons, will this flag be removed since Moz are saying "or links to a social profile" - making it sound optional. Thanks!

Where can I see the list of the new backlinks reported?
In my dashboard I see a +875 in external links. Now they are 1,130. This sounds worrying rother than good news! I'd like to get an explaination but how can I see where these links come from? And when? How can be explained a steep increase in the link count from the last index? Also, a minor question, where can I find the increase percentage? I am able to see only the absolute count.

No incoming links from DMOZ in my report
Hi, I am confused, after so much years of waiting, some months ago I got listed in the DMOZ http://www.dmoz.org/World/Español/Tiempo_libre/Turismo/Blogs/ (My blog is Charcotrip) The problem is that when I check the incoming list in the MOZ report, the DMOZ link is totally absent, I don't get it. Does anyone knows why can this happening? (is not that my blog get recently listed, now it has been there for a while). Thanks!

Why does facebook, twitter, pinterest show up for links?
Hello, As I have used site explorer on competition sites, I am curious what I need to do to have my facebook, twitter, and pinterest links to shop up as a backlink? I see some other sites have it, even if its a nofollow, but curious if I am doing something wrong? I have had accounts since last year. Just curious if I am doing something wrong, Thank you Chris

Does OSE crawl our site often? Or do we have an other problem? (internal links)
I am wondering if i can find out when OpenSiteExplorer crawled our entire website for the last time.
Link Explorer | | wilcoXXL
A few months ago we added some internal textlinks to all of our productpages. Those are links to the brandpage of that particular product. Some of our brands do have up to 1500 products, so there should be at least 1500 internal links pointing to that brandpage. But OSE still gives me a wrong count. It says there is only 1 internal link pointing to that brandpage.
Is it because OSE never crawled our site again? Or am i missing something here?(maybe too many internal links to one specific brandpage is not okay?) I'll hope you guys can help me out with this one.0
