Htaccess redirects
-
Annoyingly it's time to play with this beast again.
I've been given the task of doing the following.
Keeping the homepage live
Redirecting categories to the specific categories on the new site
Catch all redirects
Now i've managed to setup the specific categories and the catch all redirects, however I am unsure how to keep the homepage live (which is like this:www.domain.com/ so I can't just exclude that?)
Would appreciate any help.

If I have understood it correctly, you want:
- To redirect certain category pages to new category pages on a new domain.
- Redirect all other pages to the homepage on a new domain
- Not to redirect the homepage and for that to stay on the current domain.
If so I think this should probably do what you want:
RewriteRule ^$ - [L]
RewriteRule categoryA/ http://www.newdomain.com/newcategoryA/ [R=301,L]
RewriteRule (.+) http://www.newdomain.com/ [R=301,L]The first rule says "if this is the homepage stop evaluating rules". The second maps a category page over to the new version and stops evaluating rules; you'll need to duplicate this one for all the specific categories. The last rule is your catch-all rule for redirecting everything else to the homepage of the new domain.
If you want to easily test/check then I highly recommend this .htaccess checker tool.
Good luck!

Got around this by adding catch alls for a-z/0-9.
RewriteRule ^a(.*) http://www.domain.com? [R=301,NE,NC,L]
This meant that the homepage wasn't being touched. However I did lose all of the category specific redirects. I'm sure there was a way around this however I don't know htaccess to do this well enough. Would be interesting if anyone would know how to do all three?

Fix redirect loop
Hi,
Technical SEO | | bshanahan
I've been trying set up a 301 redirect from http://domestiquecap.com to www.domestiquecap.com but one was already set up by my client the other way around (from www to http://) so it's creating a redirect loop. However, we don't know where that original redirect was set up. The htaccess file doesn't appear to have the redirect and neither does the control panel of our hosting company. We need to turn off that original redirect so that I can instead redirect to the www subdomain. Where else could this 301 redirect have been set up? Is there a tool to diagnose where the 301 redirect was created so that I can turn it off? I am thinking maybe it was created via the domain registrar (GoDaddy) since the client has the login there and hasnt shared it with me.0 -
301 redirect new site design
Hi I'm just setting up some 301 redirects for a new site design about to go live. The old site structure had some 'overview' pages in the urls (without any content) that just 302'd to a sub page. Do i need 301 redirect these overview page urls or since they had no content theres no need and I probably shouldn't or should i ? Also for pages that have no direct equivalent replacement is it still best to 301 to nearest relevant page or just leave it. For example a thank you page that currently shows after user submits email form wont be on new site (since message shows on form page after submission rather than new page). Should i 301 to form page or just leave it ? Cheers Dan

Redirect link from a particular domain
Hi guys/gals, I have a few domains and blogs which I use really for a bit of fun and experimenting. One of the domains (abc.com) wasn't doing much but has a few decent links built to it. I redirected this domain to an active blog (123.com). Here's the problem: There's a particular external link to the homepage of abc.com which drives a lot of traffic but isn't relevant to the content of 123.com which it redirects to, causing a huge bounce rate from this link. Is there a way (maybe using using htaccess) that I can redirect traffic from this one link to another domain completely? I've contacted the owner of the external site but they are unable (or unwilling) to change the link. I hope I haven't lost you all but shout if you need any clarification. Thanks in advance!

301 redirects and Dynamic URLs
I just ran my first diagnostic and one of my primary immediate problems are duplicate titles and duplicate content. My guess it that because the root URL http://sitename.com (which has not yet been redirected to www...) has generated an entire tree of content which is identical to the tree rooted at http://www.sitename.com. QUESTION: Do I need to do a redirect simply for the root url (sitename.com -> www.sitename.com) or do I now need to develop specific 301 redirects for each of the sub-nodes/pages? ie sitename.com/?q=about-us -> www.sitename.com/?q=about-us sitename.com/?q=our-team -> www.sitename.com/?q=our-team etc.

What about link juice? Best regards Steffen

.htaccess problem using POST method
Hi guys I'm after some help with trying to achieve the following: 1. Canonicalise to http://www. 2. Remove the index.php from root and subfolders. I have the .htaccess code below, which seemed to work fine, but the urls use the POST method and this isn't working with the rewrites. Can anyone please advise as to what I am doing wrong? As you can probably guess .htaccess isn't my strongest SEO discipline! The code I have is: http:// to http://www. RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mydomainexample.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.mydomainexample.com/$1 [R=301,L] /index.php to / Options +FollowSymLinks
DirectoryIndex index.php RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index.php\ HTTP/
RewriteRule ^index.php$ http://www.mydomainexample.com/ [R=301,L] Subdirectory /index.php to / RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]+\ /([^/]+/)index.(php|html|htm?)[#?]?
RewriteRule ^(([^/]+/))index.(php|html|htm?)$ http://www.mydomainexample.com/$1 [R=301,L] Just to add to this I have found this which I think is what I need to restrict it to GET: RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^GET.*index\.php [NC]RewriteRule (.*?)index\.php/*(.*) /$1$2 [R=301,L] Thank you in advance for any suggestions as to how I may put this code together.. 301 Redirects Change?
Hi, Mozzers- I've noticed pages that are getting 301 redirected are staying out there longer. It used to be that you would implement a 301 redirect and then after a couple of months the old page would disappear out of Google's index. Over the last couple of months I've noticed pages lingering, popping up.... What gives? Thanks in advance! LHC
