Duplicate Site Content found in Moz; Have a URL Parameter set in Google Webmaster Tools
-
Hey,
So on our site we have a Buyer's Guide that we made. Essentially it is a pop-up with a series of questions that then recommends a product. The parameter ?openguide=true can be used on any url on our site to pull this buyer's guide up. Somehow the Moz Site Crawl reported each one of our pages as duplicate content as it added this string (?openguide=true) to each page.
We already have a URL Parameter set in Google Webmaster Tools as openguide ; however, I am now worried that google might be seeing this duplicate content as well. I have checked all of the pages with duplicate title tags in the Webmaster Tools to see if that could give me an answer as to whether it is detecting duplicate content. I did not find any duplicate title tag pages that were because of the openguide parameter.
I am just wondering if anyone knows:
1. a way to check if google is seeing it as duplicate content
2. make sure that the parameter is set correctly in webmaster tools
3. or a better way to prevent the crawler from thinking this is duplicate contentAny help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mitchell Chapman

Hey Paul,
Thanks for the response! Our site is an ecommerce site through Magento. I though we had all of the canonicalization set up correctly since we followed this article: https://moz.com/ugc/setting-up-magento-for-the-search-engines
I was under the impression that the canonicalization was encompassed in the Auto-direct to base url setting. But there is also a setting under Search Engine Optimization to enable canonical link meta tag for categories and products. Both are set to yes. Any idea why the canonical tags might not be working? Also, how can we implement the canonical tag in magento for the homepage?

The Moz crawler has no access to what you might have set in Search Console, so it can't make use of that info, Mitchell. In addition, the other search engines will have the same problem.
Fortunately, there is a mechanism specifically built for this situation that works for pretty much all search crawlers. It's the canonical tag. By adding a self referential canonical tag in the header of every page, you're telling search engines that any version of the URL that has a variable in it should be considered the same as the main (canonical) URL and pass all it's influence to the canonical URL as well. Poof - dupe content issue resolved.
Self-referential just means that the page's canonical tag uses its own "clean" URL. That way, even if a search engine crawls the version with the variable, the page header will still point to the clean version.
Your site has an additional significant canonicalisation problem. It currently can be reached and indexed under both http://www.kontrolfreek.com and also the https version at https://www.kontrolfreek.com. Search engines consider these separate sites, so you're splitting your domain authority.
Get the 301 redirects in place so that all non-https pages and resources are redirected to their https versions, then use the https URL version for the canonical tags in each page header. (It's essential that static resources like images/CSS/JavaScript etc are also using the https URLs, otherwise browsers will indicate security problems on the page as you currently have even with your https URLs)
Hope that all makes sense? If not, holler.
Paul

How to Combine the Moz Keyword Difficulty Tool with Google Keyword Planner for LOCAL (city/town) Results
Hi there, I wish that Moz would show local (city/town) results in their Keyword Difficulty Tool. But they don't, so here's my question: I'm trying to rank for keywords "interior design" in a local geographic area in the US. When using Google KWP, I'm selecting all the towns I want to rank in, and searching against the keywords INTERIOR DESIGN. The search volume appears to be approx. 370 a month. What I'm not sure about is whether I should instead (or in addition to), be searching for INTERIOR DESIGN (CITY), and leaving the geographic selection as US. What is most accurate? OR...should I search for INTERIOR DESIGN (CITY) in Moz's Keyword tool? How do you guys do it?

Moz is incorrect
So i have had my latest crawl, and the keyword report is showing that using google.co.uk i have some keywords not within the top 50 - i have just done a spot check (coping & pasting) direct from Moz to google.co.uk and out of 4 i have checked 1 keyword i am number 4 and 1 keyword i am page 3 - therefore within the top 50. This leads me to believe that there is something wrong with Moz - here is 1 example "land in the cayman islands" i am showing in moz as not in the top 50 when i am showing on Google as number.4

How can I correct this massive duplicate content problem?
I just updated a clients website which resulted in about 6000 duplicate page content errors. The way I set up my clients new website is I created a sub folder calles blog and installed wordpress on that folder. So when you go to suncoastlaw.com your taken to an html website, but if you click on the blog link in the nav, your taken to the to blog subfolder. The problem I'm having is that the url's seem to be repeating them selves. So for example, if you type in in http://suncoastlaw.com/blog/aboutus.htm/aboutus.htm/aboutus.htm/aboutus.htm/ that somehow is a legitimate url and is being considered duplicate content of of http://suncoastlaw.com/aboutus.htm/. This repeating url only seems to be a problem when the blog/ is in the url. Any ideas as to how I can fix this?

How is a site really ranking when taking into account Google places?
When I do a rankings search for one of my sites on Google and it appears high in Google places, SEO Moz tracks this as its ranking - but is this its organic ranking? My clients are wondering if things have changed and so am I? Does ranking in the Google places/map appearing on front page of google count as your ranking for that keyword? Client keeps ignoring the Google places ranking and goes looking for a placement farther down... Please explain this probably simple question to me... and if you have official Google references for this, please include them. I appreciate it a lot... be blessed ben

Why does Open Site Explorer show less inbound links than yahoo site Explorer?
Hello, We have a question regarding inbound link measurement. We used to measure our inbound links with yahoo site explorer. Now that it's been shut down we use opensiteexplorer.org. However, Open Site Explorer only shows a fraction of inbound links compared to yahoo site explorer. For our website www.theprintspace.co.uk yahoo site explorer measured approx. 14,000 inbound links, whereas open Site Explorer only counts approx. 3,000. This is more than 10,000 links less. For our other website www.theprintspace.de Open Site Explorer also shows 3000 links less than Yahoo. How can this be? Does Open Site Explorer count the links in a different way to Yahoo? Please explain. It would be great if you could help us with this. Thank you!
