Temporary Blog Removal Process Question
-
Hello,
We need to temporarily remove our entire blog from one of our sites. They rely very heavily on the blog content; as the rest of the site does not have much. Is there a 'best' process for going about this? – Should we put a 302 redirect on the entire blog and if so should it be to the homepage or an under-construction type page?
Any extra insight or suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Thank you in advance for the help.
Best,

No problem at all.
The legal implications certainly make it more complicated! Unfortunately the only suggestion I could really offer here is to block out a time where you can get through them all at once or withing a day or two max.
The longer they're down, the greater the chance you'll drop in rankings and not see an easy recovery.
It may even be worth doing them in batches of 10 - 20 posts and re-publishing them as you finish each batch. At least this way you're steadily minimising the number of pages that are offline rather than taking the all or nothing approach.

Thank you, Chris. We were thinking of taking the 302 redirect approach. The issue is actually with all of the images used on the blog articles. There are 100’s of posts and many from a few years ago need to be evaluated for copyright concerns. While we sort through all of them we will need to take the blog down temporarily.
Let us know if you have any other suggestions/approaches you think would be best. The extra insight is appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Thanks again.

That's a very tough situation. Unless by "temporary" you mean a day or two, removing the only section of the site that's providing real value is almost definitely going to see a pronounced downturn in your rankings.
I suppose the best way to handle it is the 302 to a "Sorry, our blog is undergoing some maintenance and will be back in March" type of page.
What I would actually suggest to a client in this scenario though is to build the new blog (assuming that's what's happening here) and have it ready to go before taking the current one down. You've probably thought of that though so I imagine there's something in this scenario that makes it impossible?

Ecommerce Rich Snippets Category Question
Hello Technical question: I have category pages in my site - and product pages in my site. Category Pages I Have listed Grouped products on them ( i.e. a product that could have multiple offers for each size ) I Have the relevant markup for them ( one for each product ) . Product Pages The Product pages have grouped products as well - but the individual simple products are note marked up. The Product pages have Aggregate reviews on them. My question is this: Should I use the grouped product sku to identify the grouped product on the category page and the product page? Technically they aren't Stock Keeping Units ( SKU's ) - but they could be used to link the 2 together to avoid duplicates. Ideas?

Panda penalty removal advice
Hi everyone! I'm after a second (or third, or fourth!) opinion here! I'm working on the website www.workingvoices.com that has a Panda penalty dating from the late March 2012 update. I have made a number of changes to remove potential Panda issues but haven't seen any rankings movement in the last 7 weeks and was wondering if I've missed something... The main issues I identified and fixed were: Keyword stuffed near duplicate title tags - fixed with relevant unique title tags Copies of the website on other domains creating duplicate content issues - fixed by taking these offline Thin content - fixed by adding content to some pages, and noindexing other thin/tag/category pages. Any thoughts on other areas of the site that might still be setting off the mighty Panda are appreciated! Cheers Damon.

SEO Question re: Keyword Cannibalization
I know about Keyword Cannibalization, so I understand why it's generally a problem. If you have multiple versions of the same page, Google has to "guess" which one to display (as I understand it, unless you have a SUPER influential page you won't get both pages showing up on the SERP). To explain why I'm not sure if this applies to our page, we have a blog that we write about employment law issues on. So we might have 20 blog posts over the past year that all talk about recent pregnancy discrimination lawsuits employers might be interested in. Now, searching the Google Keyword tools, there aren't even close to 20 different focus keywords that would make any sense. "Pregnancy Discrimination lawsuit" is niche enough for us to be competitive, but anything more specific than that simply has very little search activity. My suggestion is to just optimize all of them for "pregnancy discrimination lawsuit". My understand of how Panda works is that if the content is different on each page (and it is!) then it will only display what it guesses is the most relevant "NLRB" post, but any link juice sent to the other 19 "NLRB" posts would still boost the relevancy for whatever post Google chooses. And it wouldn't get dinged as keyword stuffing because it's clearly not just the same page repeated over and over. I've found quite a few articles on Keyword Cannibalization but many are pre-Panda. I was CERTAIN I'd seen a post that explained my idea is a totally viable and good one, but of course now I can't find it. So before I go full steam ahead with this strategy I just want to make sure there's nothing I'm missing. Thanks!

Technical Site Questions
When i do a google cache of our site, i see 2 menus, our developers say that's because the 2nd is for the mobile menu - is that correct, as when i look up other sites that have mobile rendering they only have one menu visible. Plus GWT's has the number of internal links per page at least x2 what they should have - are they connected? Secondly when i do a spider test through http://tools.seobook.com/general/spider-test/ it shows all "behind the scenes text" eg font names, portals, sliders, margins - "font size px" is shown as 17 times and a density of 2.15% - surely this isnt correct as google will be thinking that these are my keywords !? My site is www.over50choices.co.uk Thanks Ash

How do you remove Authorship photos from your homepage?
Suppose you have a website with a blog on it, and you show a few recent blog posts on the homepage. Google see the headline + by Author Name and associates that user's Google+ profile. This is great for the actual blog posts, but how do you prevent this from happening on the homepage or other blog roll page?

Plugins to protect Wordpress Blog Posts?
Ive noticed there are quite a few websites copying the content from my site I have in Google news. After speaking to a friend, they told me that there are plugins to help prevent this from happening or leaving some sort of finger print in the copied content. My site uses author tags already. Does anyone have recommendations of plugins to use?

Temporary Redirects on Magento
I've recently taken over a client who uses the Magento platform and there was definitely a duplicate issue with his homepage. It redirected www to non www, however the canonical tag was setup wrong and pointing to the www version. When I looked at OSE for both versions the non www has only 7 linking domains and a page authority of 32. The www version has 24 linking domains and page authority of 39. As the domain is fairly new, I decided to redirect the non www to www and keep the canonical the same. (I changed the internal linking structure etc). When I run both URLs through this tool: http://www.ragepank.com/redirect-... it's returning a whole bunch of 302, rather than 301 redirects. What's the deal with that? Is that a Magento setting that I can fix or something a little harder? I'm not sure if it's proper etiquette to post the URL of a client, so if that would help and is OK, please let me know. Thanks
