      Hello,

I'm Alexia and a few months ago (end of March) my site has been hacked: hackers have created more than 30.000 links in Japanese to sell tires.

I've successfully removed the hack and after 14 days of struggle even decided to change the domain to Siteground as they've been really keen to help.

I still have some problems and I desperately need your tips.

      • In search console, Google is informing about the +30.000 404 errors due to the content created by hackers which is not available anymore. I've been advised to redirect those links to 410 as they might have penalty effects in the SERP

      • I have 50 503 server errors recognised by Google back in April but still there. What should I do to solve them?

      • I still have a lot of traffic from Japan, even if I've removed all the content and ask Googled to disavow spamming backlinks. Do you think I have on page keywords? I don't understand how they can still find me.

      • Those KWs are indexed in analytics, but not effective clicks, as the content is not there anymore. I also asked Google to remove links in search console with the tool removing links but not all of my requests have been accepted.

      • My site disappeared from the organic results even if it hasn't been recognised as hacked in Google (there wasn't any manual actions on the Search Console). What can I do to gain the organic positioning once again? I've just tried to use the “Fetch as Google” option on search console for the entire website.

Thank you all and I look forward to your replies.

      Thanks!

      Alessia

        Hey Alessia,

So, there are quite a few moving parts here; let's go through them one by one...

When you say that you've changed domain to siteground, what does that mean, exactly? There are a lot of nuances and a lot of potential complexity surrounding changing domains and sites; something I've written about recently on Moz. It'd be good to understand whether this was a just a domain migration (and if so, how it was managed), or something more complex or comprehensive.

If you could answer that, it'd provide a lot of useful context for helping to diagnose your problem, and working towards some options/answers.

        In the meantime...

        • With regards to the traffic you're still getting from Japan, I wouldn't be too concerned. It's doubtful that it's harming you, although, if it's coming through as a result of a hacked site, I'd wonder if some/all of it might actually be bot traffic - are you tracking it in Google Analytics / similar, and can you get a feel for whether it looks like normal browsing behaviour (or something a little more robotic)?
        • With regards to the errors reported in Search Console, I wouldn't worry too much. If you're confident that you've resolved the issue, the error reports are just paperwork - they don't harm you in any way, and you can tick them off a little at a time. Unfortunately, there's no fast way to do this, and you can only remove 100 (I think?) per day, without using their API; but it really doesn't matter too much. Still, it's worthwhile clearing them out, because you'll want to be able to see any new or remaining issues in the future.

I did everything, my site is clean now.

My question is: which are the next steps in terms of SEO? Obviously, my ranking is not the same as before and I'm looking for replies to all the questions I asked in my message. Thanks

            Hey Alessia,

              Hey Alessia,

It's quite challenging to recover after your site was hacked.

In this case, I'd recommend doing all the steps in this article and then request a review by Google itself to look at your site and mark it as healthy again.

Try this first and if you need any further help, feel free to let me know. Cheers, Martin

Ranking #1 but Bounce Rate is 90%?!

Hi Mozers, We have a page that's ranking #1 for several very high volume queries but the bounce rate is 90%. It's puzzling that the page is ranking so well even though the bounce rate is exceedingly high. The algorithm takes user engagement metrics into account so you would think that it those metrics would push the page down. Having said that, the page does have lots of backlinks. So maybe it's ranking despite the fact that people are clicking out? Does anyone have an idea? Thanks, Yael

How to rank if you are an aggregator or a directory of resource?

Most of the SEO suggestions (great quality content, long form content, engagement rate/time on the page, authority inbound links ) apply to content oriented site. But what should you do if you are an aggregator or a resource directory?  You aim is to send the user faster to other site they are looking for or provide ranking about the resources. In fact at a very basic level you are competing for search engine traffic because they are doing same things. You may have done a hand crafted, human created resource that is better than what algorithms are showing.  And your site  likely to have lot more outgoing links than content. You know you are better (or getting better) since repeat visitors keep coming back. So in these days of Search engines, what a resource directory or aggregator site do to rank? Because even directories need first time visitors till they start coming back again.

Ranking 1st for a keyword - but when 's' is added to the end we are ranking on the second page

Hi everyone - hope you are well. I can't get my head around why we are ranking 1st for a specific keyword, but then when 's' is added to the end of the keyword - we are ranking on the second page. What could be the cause of this? I thought that Google would class both of the keywords the same, in this case, let's say the keyword was 'button'. We would be ranking 1st for 'button', but 'buttons' we are ranking on the second page. Any ideas? - I appreciate every comment.

How to recover google rank after changing the domain name?

I just started doing SEO for a new client. The case is a bit unique as they build a new website and for some reason lunched in under another domain name. Old name is foodstepsinasia.com and new one is foodstepsinasiatravel.com OLD one is a respected webites with 35 in MOZ page authority and with +15000 incomming link (104 root domains) NEW one is curently on 0 The programmer has just that build the new website has set it up so that when people write or find the old domain name it redirect to the front page of the new website with the new domain name. this caused that my friends lost a lot of their rankings was so I believ it was a very bad solution. But I also think I can get most of the old rankings back, but my question is what to do now to get as much back of the rankings as fast as possible?? A) I believe I must change the domain name back to foodstepsinasia.com on the new website ? O B) Should I on the old website try finding the url of the pages with most page authority and recreate these urls on the new website or should i redict them to a page with related content? Looking forward to feedback from someone who have experience with similar cases. Thanks!

                Recovering from robots.txt error

Hello, A client of mine is going through a bit of a crisis. A developer (at their end) added Disallow: / to the robots.txt file. Luckily the SEOMoz crawl ran a couple of days after this happened and alerted me to the error. The robots.txt file was quickly updated but the client has found the vast majority of their rankings have gone. It took a further 5 days for GWMT to file that the robots.txt file had been updated and since then we have "Fetched as Google" and "Submitted URL and linked pages" in GWMT. In GWMT it is still showing that that vast majority of pages are blocked in the "Blocked URLs" section, although the robots.txt file below it is now ok. I guess what I want to ask is: What else is there that we can do to recover these rankings quickly? What time scales can we expect for recovery? More importantly has anyone had any experience with this sort of situation and is full recovery normal? Thanks in advance!

Why am I not ranking in Google, but I am in Yahoo and Bing?

The website in question is: www.stbarthexclusives.com Our keywords are currently ranking for both Bing and Yahoo, but we're not appearing anywhere on Google. The website is being crawled successfully, but we still don't have any results. I hoping somebody can point me in the general right direction to fix/correct this problem. Additionally, there's a decent amount of "rel=canonical tags" on the website. If that helps your evaluation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
