Video on Site Before Youtube?
-
We are going to create a few 1 - 2 minute instructional videos. I will be creating a blog that will include the video for our main website. I want to say I read or saw (Whiteboard Friday) that Rand Fishkin mentioned to place the video on your site first for about a month (or weeks). Then, you can publish it on Youtube etc.
It sounds like a good plan. Have Google index your blog with the video and receive organic traffic. Then place it on Youtube.
Is that correct? Is that the best practice?
Like i said, I think it was Rand that discuss this. Would love to get feedback.
Thanks.

Rand,
Thank you for responding to my question. That's awesome...I'll make sure that's exactly what we do. I'm looking forward to see more about this from the link you provided.
Thanks again.

Brooks,
Thanks for the information. I'll take a look at the video.

Yes! This is exactly what we do, and it's been a solid strategy for us. You can see a bit more depth about how we do this here via my presentation at Wistiafest a few years back: https://wistia.com/wistiafest/2014/speaker/rand-fishkin

Great question – I've noticed for Whiteboard Fridays that Moz will use Wistia to embed a video in their post, and then post a video to Youtube, like you are suggesting. I would bet Moz has put a lot of thought into their strategy for video.
Here's a post from a few years ago that should be helpful – not sure if it's the post you're referring to: https://moz.com/blog/video-seo-post-rich-snippets

Video Sitemap for product pages
Hi all- i have a video that talks about a particular type of product and have it set up on every page in that category. I am in the process of updating our video sitemap and want to know if I should list all the occurrences in the sitemap or just one? I had asked a similar question earlier about placement, but here I am specifically interested in the sitemap. Thanks! Ken

Hosting Video both on YouTube AND Independently on Site?
I've got a pretty good handle on the pros / cons of hosting on videos on a free service like YouTube vs. hosting them independently with something like Wistia. But one question I've never heard answered is "Why not host the same video both ways?" Why wouldn't I publish a video to YouTube (to get the exposure and better chance to rank) and then also host the same video independently on my site with Wistia (to get a second listing in the SERPs, as well as a thumbnail that links to my site)? Is this seen as a spammy practice? Duplicate content? Would love to hear your thoughts on this as it's something that seems to potentially be a win-win, but haven't heard it discussed. Thanks!

Videos not displaying within YouTube search results (query starting with '@' symbol)
We recently uploaded a video to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah0CgZ22NNU) only to realize that it wasn't being displayed within YouTube's internal search results when searched for by the brand name. Our partner's brand name is @WashULaw. If you were to search for @WashULaw on YouTube, you'll notice it returns a 'No Search Results' page (http://screencast.com/t/ZP3SGM5sr). However, when you search for keywords without the @ symbol (i.e. washulaw, wash u law, etc) within YouTube, our video is discovered. However, if you enter the @ symbol within their search bar and choose one of the auto-suggest keywords, you'll notice the query returns video matches (http://screencast.com/t/wkghMhRY). Looking at the view counts of these videos, they appear to be over 100K each. Our video has been indexed by YouTube (http://screencast.com/t/6xV3kW2DHQ6R) and Google (http://screencast.com/t/r4jloA0BpPf). We've even added @WashuLaw as a tag. My question, does anyone have an idea as to why our video isn't displaying when someone searches for our brand @WashULaw with the @ symbol within YouTube's search? ZP3SGM5sr

How to get video content indexed (incl. example)?
Hi, I am currently working with my first client on SEO, and I've been asked (among other things) to help them get their video content indexed by Google. Since this is my first client, and I haven't worked much with videos, I hope I can get some tips. An example of one of their "theme pages" is about studying in Australia. The site is in Norwegian and don't mind the pop-up: http://www.studenttorget.no/australia I would love to get some feedback to what I should do about this page in order to help them get their videos indexed. By the way, they're considering hosting their own videos, and creating a system to keep everything local. Is this a better solution to seo than if the videos are hosting on YouTube/Vimeo or something else? Thanks. Jens P. Berget
