    I need help choosing the ideal URL structure for a multi-city directory. The current URL structure is /category which is okay because we are only in one geography. However, we're now expanding to other cities so we are reevaluating the best way of structuring the URL.

    The three options I have are:

    1. example.com/city/category
    • Pro: Follows the user around with the city after the root (like language)
    • Con: Possible short-term traffic loss. Build page authority on new URLs
    • Pro: SEO Benefit for terms: {city category}
    • example.com/city/ would have to be a URL and a general landing page. This would mean that /category would no longer exist
    1. example.com/category/city
    • The website is currently set-up with /category but is now expanding beyond Toronto
    • Pro: /category would still exist so no short-term SEO issues
    • Pro: SEO Benefit for terms: {general category}
    • example.com/category/ is already a URL and would display results based on proximity
    1. example.com/category (geo recognizes city)
    • Pro: Clean URL
    • Con: We're not Ticketmaster

    I was able to find major directory sites with very strong SEO doing it all three ways above.

    City First

    1. https://www.yelp.ca/c/toronto/restaurants
    2. https://angel.co/r/toronto/marketing/jobs
    3. https://www.redflagdeals.com/in/toronto/deals/c/cell-phones/
    4. https://www.bizbash.com/new-york/venues

    Category First

    1. https://eventup.com/venues/new-york-ny/
    2. https://www.yellowpages.ca/search/si/1/Restaurants/Toronto+ON
    3. https://www.weddingwire.ca/wedding-venues/ontario
    4. https://www.livenation.com/cities/130465/toronto-on

    No City in URL

    1. https://www.ticketmaster.ca/

      I think you should consider how your users are interacting with your website and how they search for your services/products/locations and follow that. For example, Yelp is focused on local reviews. People will filter first to their city, then the category naturally. You would never filter down to restaurants first, because if you're in Huntington Beach, CA you really don't care what's in Portland, OR. If location is secondary to your product, then it makes sense to start with the category. For example, let's say you sell ATVs and other off-road vehicles and gear, but some showrooms only have ATVs while others also carry dirt bikes. Customers who are looking for a dirt bike care more about reaching a showroom with dirt bikes, so that category structure would be preferable.

      Note that I'm assuming in both of the above examples that your navigation is following the structure of your website for usability purposes. In terms of structure, one way is not inherently better than the other from a ranking/algorithm perspective, but if your structure is confusing it can be detrimental to SEO. For example, outreach is a lot harder if you have a garbage navigation that contributes to poor user experience on your website. Any piece of Google's algorithm that measures user satisfaction with your website (Rank Brain, pogo sticking, etc.) will either directly or indirectly affect you depending on how user friendly your website is.

      One last thing: in both instances you have the geography in the URL, so if you're hoping for a boost for local phrases from an exact match URL I think you're already tapping that. EMDs are nowhere near as effective as they were in years past, so I wouldn't make that my focus.

        Local Landing Page Optimization and Multiple GMB Listings

        Hello, We’re building out a site for our business that has close to 100 office locations in different cities. Many of these are ‘partner brands’ that we have acquired under our brand. Similar to a franchise model. We want to be able to help users find offices near their location. Each office will have it’s own landing page with a physical address and contact information. We know we’ll have to build out unique copy and markup customized to the office/location. We’ve already read through https://moz.com/blog/overcoming-your-fear-of-local-landing-pages as well. We’re also considering ‘silos’ to build out pages for each location. To preserve authority and avoid cannibalization; our thought was having each location as sub-folders off of our domain (i.e. domain.com/locations/Partner#1/). The other option would be using a sub-domain (i.e. Partner.Domain.com/) which we noticed competitors doing and treating each sub-domain as their own independent site. Is all of the above the correct strategy? Any further suggestions? Should we fill out a separate GMB for each office and should they all use the same brand name? (in other words “BrandA” vs. “BrandA” - Brooklyn Office). In addition to GMB; would each location need local listings created (also all under the same name)?         optimized GMB

        Hi Community, I have optimized GMB like adding keyword-rich content, asking customers to review and putting up more products. But how I can outrank others on Google Map. TBH, I think my listing is more complete and relevant than others but mine just doesn't display when searching for those terms. Please help! Thank you very much!

        URL Injection Attack Removal

        Hello, I noticed that there are many irrelevant keywords showing up on anchor text tool for my website.  The website is about coding programs for kids.  The following are some of the many keywords that are being listed as part of the website.  I'm guessing this is a URL Injection Attack.  Does anyone know how I can remove these?  Thank you very much for your time. | "great essays writing edition great th" | 5 | 5 | |

        How many directories are too many directories?

        Local citations from business directories in other countries

        Hi all, I normally work for clients in my home county (The Netherlands) and with local citation building I focus on Dutch websites or well know .com websites in the Netherlands. My rule of thumb kinda was, if it’s not known in the Netherlands it isn’t worth getting mentioned there. Since The Netherlands are pretty small and I think Google ain’t perfect I was wondering if it makes sense to list a Dutch business on any .com business listings that are internationally big, but aren’t well known in the Netherlands. Two reasons that got me thinking this direction: A big well known Dutch company offers a service such as Moz local and did integrate their service with several international business listing websites that I never heard off, since these business directories focus themselves on other parts of the world. Google ain’t perfect and I think they got more budget to identify trustworthy business directories with an international focus or a focus on America then with a focus on The Netherlands. So I’m wondering if it makes any sense to list a Dutch business on let’s say the top 20 international business directories (although these directories don’t have any brand recognition in The Netherlands).

        Is eLocal a scam or legitimate directory for local SEO?

        I just got an email from eLocal with information that is way farther off than any other email I have received from directories I know. I ran a search on them, and it definitely seems fishy. Plus, it's not showing up as a problem in my Moz Local account. However, I don't want an inconsistent listing if this is a legitimate site I should correct. Anyone have experience with them? What should I do? Thanks for the assistance, Ruben

        Google Maps redirect notice on track-able URL's (how do I track maps visits in analytics?)

        We've been using trackable URL's to track Google My Business visits in analytics for years.
        Example: ?utm_source=GoogleLocal&utm_medium=example&utm_campaign=example In the past month I've noticed Google showing a redirect notice on any listing with a trackable URL.  It happened for a day or so a few weeks ago - and then it's been a more permanent situation since this past week. Redirect Notice
        The previous page is sending you to:  www.example.com
        If you do not want to visit that page, you can return to the previous page.
        I'm fine with removing the trackable URL's - however - I'm not sure how to track maps visits via analytics without using them.  I can't find any updated information on options.  The last post on moz was in 2011 (http://moz.com/blog/tracking-traffic-from-google-places-in-google-analytics).  The alternate tactics in that post no longer work. So my question is:
        - How do I track Google Maps (My Business) visits through analytics without using tracking URLs?

        How to get a verification tick next to the URL in a Google Plus Local page?

        Google Plus Local: https://plus.google.com/+PrestedHallFeering Website: www.prested.co.uk So how do I get the verification tick next to the URL on this businesses Google page? Also, even though the website is much strong then those in the map listings for Wedding Venues In Essex, whats preventing this website from appearing in there? My local optimisation knowledge is poor!
