      Hey All!

I'm wondering if there is any benefit (or if benefit could possibly outweigh the cost) to changing a domain from .com to a new .edu domain.

The current .com domain has decent credibility already, and the .edu will have never been used before.

I can see cases for using the .edu domain.

If you are in the business of educating people at your facility, at their facility, or on a website  then I would definitely start using the .edu domain.

If you are a publisher of academic content that is really good content and recommended by professors and used by students then I would use the .edu domain.

There are many domains that clearly communicate the business of the organization.   They bring "credibility even if undeserved"... and if you really deserve it then the .edu domain could be like throwing gasoline onto a fire in terms of attracting natural links and pulling clicks in the SERPs.

Which domain would you click (or type in) if you were looking for an educational organization named "wilson"?   Which one would you be more inclined to link to?

        Wilson.com or Wilson.edu

There are .edu domains being used by organizations that are in the business of education, but most of their activities would be considered to be something other than students and teaching.  Smithsonian.edu, Getty.edu, GIA.edu.

Have you ever sent a link request to a website suggesting that they link to the most valuable page in the internet for a topic and they write back.... Wow!  That's a fantastic article, but we don't link to commercial websites?

If you have a website on wilson.com and send a link recommendation to loc.gov or nasa.gov, what are your chances of getting a link?   Does that change if your website is on wilson.edu?

I presume that this is for an educational institution. However, apart from making clear that your website is about an educational institution, it doesn't have any benefits.

If you want to redirect the .com version to the .edu version, you have to make sure that you have the right redirect strategy. Redirect pages to the right corresponding pages on the new domain using 301 redirects.

So to answer your question, I think the effort is bigger than the benefits.

No, none whatsoever. The old TLD bonus debates drew an accurate correlation but completely inaccurate causality

            People thought:

            1) I see lots of EDU sites

            2) They rank really well

            3) If I make an EDU it will rank well

... WRONG! Google aren't that stupid. Otherwise all webmasters would now be using EDU domains and all other domains would be pointless (which would be a weird internet to live on)

            The truth was actually this:

            1) EDU TLDs (Top-Level Domains) tend to be chosen by educational bodies or organisations

            2) Such organisations are usually run by educated people and academics

            3) One thing those people are good at, is creating really strong (in-depth) accurate content

            4) As such many EDU sites naturally became prominent, because of Google's normal ranking rules (not some weird EDU TLD bonus scheme)

If you're looking for quick and easy answers in SEO, you're gonna have a bad time

              Backlinks from old domain

Hi, We have gone through a change of company brand name including a new domain name.
We followed google recommendations at: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106?hl=en and it seems to have worked really well, the new domain has replaced the old in the google search results. My question: Still most of our backlinks, both anchor text and links use the old brand name and domain and it´s a slow process trying to update all references. Although they get redirected fine to the new domain (also following google recommendations), I wonder if the current scenario is doing any harm, SEO wise (other than the missed visual exposure of the new brand name) ? ...since the old brand name is not present at the new site I´m thinking of including "New brand name - previously old brand name" somewhere just to provide some sort of connection to all old backlinks, would that be unnecessary? I should mention that the old brand name actually includes our most important keyword but the new brand name does not. Thanks!

Should I migrate .co.uk to .com?

I have previously searched the forum and could not find a definitive answer on this subject so would appreciate any guidance. I have just joined a new company, we have a .co.uk site which gets lots of traffic. We have a .com site which is targeting USA and .com/de/ targeting Germany. 'hreflang' is configured on the .com (between the USA and German sites) but not on .co.uk. This means that in the eyes of search engines (and Moz Pro) the 2 domains are competitors (and the .co.uk has much more presence than the .com in the USA). I know how to fix this and I am in the process of doing so. My question is whether it would make sense to migrate the .co.uk site to .com As previously mentioned the .co.uk site already does very well both in the UK and around the world (as our product is well known in our niche). As .co.uk can only primarily be targeted to UK would our global reach increase enough to justify migrating it to .com? We have dealers/distributors in maybe 30 countries and are continuing to expand, we will at point point add additional languages so my suggestion is that we migrate now as the authority of the .co.uk will help the emerging markets as well as increase our visibility in markets that are not currently primary targets. We are also in the process of hiring new staff specifically to focus on Content Marketing. So again this suggests having the 1 domain will make sense in the long run (as any value gained from content marketing success will be seen by all country/language focussed sites). I am also planning to rebuild the sites in the next few months as the current ones are not fit for purpose so the migration would coincide with this (I know this is not ideal). Apologies for the lengthy question, I hope the additional background information will help in providing some feedback to help me make the decision. David

Is there any benefit of having a .tv tld instead of a .com for a video centric website?

We are launching a video dense website.   Is there any evidence that having a .tv tld can help with video optimization?  We are trying to find proof that Google looks at a .tv tld favorably for video SEO as opposed to a .tv website.

Combine .com and .co.uk domain? So forward .co.uk to .com for SEO?

Hello, A new client of mine has an .com and an .co.uk domain. Both the same content (and they don't have the capacity to make specific content on both domains). I am thinking building al domain authority to 1 domain. In this case the .com domain.
And forward the .co.uk to this .com domain.
In this way, the .com will rank in both UK as in other English speaking countries, right? Or not?
Or should I use the  rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tag? I am not sure. But I do know big brands rank high in the Netherlands with .com domains (for example booking.com). Looking forward on feedback on best practices here... Thanks!

Should I redirect my Google Update Effected Domain to brand new Domain?

Hey Moz experts, I had a domain which was really doing better but after the Humming Bird update my traffic was decreased up to 90%. There are plenty of posts on my existing blog, Now what should I do? I mean should I redirect it to a brand new domain or Copy all the posts to a brand new domain and delete my existing domain? Note that the Old domain has PR1, DA 19 and PA 30.

              XML Sitemap on another domain

Hi, We've rebuilt our website and created a better sitemap index structure. There's a good chance that we not be able to append the XML files to existing site for technical reasons (don't get me started). I'm reaching out because I'm wondering if can we place the XML files on another website or subdomain? I know this is not best practice and probably very grey but I'm looking for alternatives. If there answer is DON'T DO IT let me know too. Thx

Changing a url from .html to .com

Hello, I have a client that has a site with a .html plugin and I have read that its best to not have this. We currently have pages ranking with this .html plug in. However If we take the plug in out will we lose rankings? would we need a 301 or something?

              Recovery during domain migration

On average, how long does it takes to recover 80% of the rankings if two high authority domains are combined without chaging any content? I totally understand that each domain is different and search engines can treat them differently but if all the steps are followed to the T what are the chances?
