Why My Domain Authority Dropped

Previously, my Domain Authority (DA) on Moz was 14, but it appears to have dropped to 11. However, according to Ahrefs, my website now has a DA of 11. I'm curious about the discrepancy between the two platforms. Can anyone provide insights into why this might be happening?

Hello, the domain authority of my website has dropped from 25 to 21. Despite consistently publishing high-quality content, I'm puzzled about the criteria used to calculate domain authority. Can you shed some light on this?

While Semrush shows no change in domain rating, Moz indicates a drop in domain authority from 10 to 5 without explanation. I'm committed to producing quality content and building strong backlinks, yet the sudden appearance of spam backlinks complicates matters. Any advice on how to address this?

On my client website, the issue was that the DA decreased again, I tested all the things but in vain. After that I came accross to Moz . so I aduited that site. The isssue was found that there site viewing speed as low on mobile view due to huge size of images. The images was very eycatching but it was necessary to overcome this issue. So that I recommanded them to compress images size . In this way that reduced image size in kb and that they got good result back.

Domain Authority (DA) can drop for several reasons, including:
Algorithm Updates: Changes to the algorithm used to calculate Domain Authority by services like Moz can result in fluctuations. If Moz updates their algorithm and your site's metrics change, your DA could drop.
Loss of High-Quality Backlinks: Backlinks from authoritative sites contribute significantly to DA. If your site loses some of these backlinks, either due to the linking site removing the link or changes in their own authority, your DA might decrease.
Poor Quality Backlinks: If your site gains a lot of low-quality or spammy backlinks, this can negatively impact your DA. Search engines like Google penalize sites for such links, which can affect your overall authority.
Content Quality: The quality and relevance of your content can also impact DA. If your content is outdated, low-quality, or not relevant to your target audience, it can affect your site's authority.
Site Structure and Performance: Issues with your site's structure, loading speed, mobile-friendliness, or security can also affect your DA. Search engines favor sites that provide a good user experience.
Competition: Changes in the DA of competing sites can also impact your own DA. If your competitors improve their SEO efforts, it can make your site appear relatively less authoritative.
It's important to regularly monitor your site's DA and address any issues that may arise, such as improving content quality, acquiring high-quality backlinks for Letter of Credit , and ensuring your site's technical aspects are up to date.

It's a very good question. I do not believe that SEO is dead as some of the members suggested here. However, Google has made it very difficult for the people who were copy pasting content from AI based chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini. The content has to be original and it must not be written by some chatbot in order to get it ranked on Google. Furthermore, the UI/UX design also needs to be more user friendly. If you want to learn more, you can take a course in SEO. Currently I'm doing a course from Hadi E-Learning and I'm happy with their teaching methods.

@Happy1414 There is no way to check DA exactly how Google sees it, because Google does not use DA or reveal its own metrics. DA is a score created by Moz, and Ahrefs has a similar score called DR. Both are based on the number and quality of backlinks, but they use different methods to calculate them. Google has its own way of evaluating websites, which is not disclosed to the public. However, Google provides some tools and guidelines to help you optimize your website for its search engine, such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Google PageSpeed Insights, Google Lighthouse, Webmaster Guidelines, and Quality Rater Guidelines. You can use these resources to improve your site’s performance, quality, and visibility on Google.

My website "https://www.cloudbik.com" DA also dropped from 29 to 27.
What is the reason? This is the first time I faced this.I also encountered a drop in my website's DA after Google's recent update. My site went from DA6 to DA2. The main reason was the removal of some spammy links. However, with consistent SEO efforts over the past month, I'm thrilled to share that the DA has bounced back to its initial position. Remember, these fluctuations are quite normal, and proactive SEO practices can lead to positive outcomes over time. Keep optimizing and stay patient!
The spammy links are not yet completely removed, but with some effort, my website is recovering organically!

It is possible that your domain authority may decline if your website is accumulating backlinks that are of poor quality or spammy, or if you engage in SEO strategies that are frowned upon, such as link farming. This kind of connection is considered suspicious by Google, which might result in penalties being applied to your page.
-
@emilywatson8423 There could be several reasons why your website's domain authority has dropped and why there is spam on your website. Here are some potential factors to consider:
Low-Quality Backlinks: Spammy or low-quality backlinks pointing to your website can negatively impact your domain authority. These backlinks may come from irrelevant or suspicious websites, link farms, or black hat SEO practices.
Thin Content: If your website contains thin or low-quality content, it may be seen as less authoritative by search engines. This could include content that is copied from other sources, lacks depth or relevance, or is stuffed with keywords.
Keyword Stuffing: Overusing keywords in your content or meta tags in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings can result in penalties from search engines.
Spammy or Malicious Content: If your website contains spammy or malicious content, such as hidden text, links to malware, or deceptive advertising, it can harm your domain authority and reputation.
Technical Issues: Technical issues such as slow page speed, broken links, or improper redirects can negatively impact user experience and, consequently, your website's authority.
To improve your website's domain authority and address spam issues, here are some steps you can take:
Audit Backlinks: Conduct a thorough audit of your backlink profile to identify any spammy or low-quality links. Disavow any harmful backlinks using Google's Disavow Tool and focus on acquiring high-quality, relevant backlinks from authoritative websites.
Optimize Content: Review and optimize your website's content to ensure it is high-quality, relevant, and valuable to your target audience. Remove or update any thin or low-quality content, and focus on providing comprehensive, informative content that addresses your audience's needs and interests.
Monitor Keyword Usage: Ensure that your keyword usage is natural and aligned with best practices. Avoid keyword stuffing and focus on creating content that is well-written and provides value to users.
Check for Spam and Malicious Content: Regularly monitor your website for spammy or malicious content and promptly remove or address any issues. Use security plugins and tools to protect your website from malware and other security threats.
Optimize Technical SEO: Address any technical issues on your website that may be impacting performance and user experience. This includes optimizing page speed, fixing broken links, and ensuring proper site structure and navigation.
By addressing these issues and implementing best practices for SEO and website management, you can work towards improving your website's domain authority and overall performance.

A drop in Domain Authority (DA) can be concerning, but understanding the causes can help in addressing the issue. Here are some key reasons why DA might drop, along with a solution:
Lost Backlinks: If websites that previously linked to your site remove those links or become inactive, your DA can decrease. Solution: Regularly monitor your backlink profile and seek new, high-quality backlinks.
Algorithm Updates: Search engines frequently update their algorithms, which can affect how they assess DA. Solution: Stay informed about algorithm updates and adjust your SEO strategy accordingly.
Reduced Search Visibility: A decline in keyword rankings can lead to a lower DA. Solution: Continuously optimize your content with relevant, high-ranking keywords.
Website Changes: Significant changes to your site's structure or content can impact DA. Solution: Ensure that any major website updates are SEO-friendly.
Competitor SEO Improvements: If your competitors enhance their SEO strategies, they may surpass you in DA. Solution: Regularly analyze your competitors' strategies and adapt.

@Mind-2-Markets
Domain authority depends on certain factors.you should regularly update the content on website, because inactivity may result in a drop in DA.
Engaging in excessive link exchange or using automated links etc.
The domain authority of the website may suffer if your backlink profile is overburdened with an excessive amount of identical anchor texts. The rationale is that if your website contains a lot of the same anchor text, Google may conclude that you are attempting to improve the site's position for that particular term. As a result, vary up your anchor texts and avoid using the same term over.
Excessive keyword overload
Slow site speed
Your competitor sites are performing better than your site. -

Domain Authority (DA) is a metric developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine result pages. It is based on a variety of factors, including the number and quality of backlinks to your site, as well as other signals.
Several reasons could contribute to a drop in Domain Authority:
-
Algorithm Updates:
- Search engines regularly update their algorithms. If there's been a significant algorithm update, it could impact how websites are ranked, including changes to Domain Authority.
-
Loss of High-Quality Backlinks:
- Backlinks from reputable and authoritative websites contribute significantly to Domain Authority. If you've lost some high-quality backlinks or if the quality of your backlinks has decreased, it could impact your DA.
-
Technical Issues:
- Technical issues on your website, such as slow loading times, server problems, or other technical errors, can affect your site's performance and, consequently, your Domain Authority.
-
Content Quality:
- If the quality of your content has decreased or if you're not regularly updating and adding new, relevant content to your site, it could impact your authority.
-
Competitive Landscape:
- Changes in the competitive landscape can also affect your Domain Authority. If competitors are improving their sites and gaining more high-quality backlinks, it might impact your relative position.
-
Penalties:
- If your site has violated search engine guidelines and received a penalty, it could result in a drop in Domain Authority.
-
Moz Algorithm Updates:
- Moz, the company behind Domain Authority, periodically updates its algorithms. Changes in how Moz calculates authority could result in fluctuations in your Domain Authority.
-
Natural Fluctuations:
- Domain Authority can naturally fluctuate over time due to changes in the web ecosystem, link profiles, and other factors.
To address a drop in Domain Authority:
-
Audit Your Backlink Profile:
- Analyze your backlink profile to identify any lost or low-quality backlinks. Focus on building high-quality, relevant backlinks.
-
Improve Content Quality:
- Ensure that your content is high-quality, relevant, and regularly updated. Create content that adds value to your audience.
-
Check for Technical Issues:
- Address any technical issues on your website, such as page load times, mobile-friendliness, and other technical SEO factors.
-
Monitor Algorithm Updates:
- Stay informed about major search engine algorithm updates and adjust your strategy accordingly.
-
Consult SEO Professionals:
- If you're uncertain about the reasons for the drop, consider consulting with SEO professionals who can conduct a detailed analysis and provide tailored recommendations.
Remember that Domain Authority is just one metric, and it's essential to focus on overall SEO strategies and providing a positive user experience on your website.

Page Authority or Domain Auothority? Which one is more importan when having an external link pointing to your page?
Im about to make a deal with another site. We are going to exchange some links from some blog posts. In order to make a fair deal, I assessed some metrics for our posts. Basically, this site have better Domain Authority than my site (30 vs 25), but the page authority of their blog post in which they want to insert their links pointing to my site is 1 for each of them. On the other hand, the page authority of my blog posts they are interested in is 13. My dilema is about being resonable to set a good deal for both of us. So, my question is, which one matters the most when it comes to external links? page authority or domain authority? My intuition is that I’m in a better position than my counterpart. Thanks.

Missing Inbound Linking Domains
For some reason, our websites seem to be missing a number of authoritative inbound linking domains which seems to be a primary driver in lowering our domain authority as compared to our competition. Does anyone have any feedback as to why this might not be populating or is there something additional we need to do to have these show up? If it doesn't show up in MOZ is it likely that Google might also not be seeing these as inbound link domains? Thanks as always MOZ Community!

Get number of OUTBOUND link from a domain ??
Hello I´m doing some link profile audit and I noticed that there are some data that would be nice to know for a proper evaluation. The case is the following: Imagine I have a link coming from a blog, so (besides other factors) would be really great to know how many external links follow-nofollow this blog has. I dont mean external links pointing to them (what opensite gives you), what I would like to know is the total number of links this blog has pointing to other external websites. With this data, I would be able to guess in a better way if this blog is selling links or if is spammy. I would be able to know also how this blog/domain distributes its link juice and if the link gives me some value or if is dangerous. I have found some tools/sites but i just get the number of links a specific url has, not the domain info: Screaming frog (but the free version gives you almost nothing, link count checker, etc... ) Do you know any way to get this data in a domain level? You think this data would be important to decide about keeping a link or taking it out? Why none of the powerful tools of the market (opensite, majestic, etc...) provide this info? Many thanks for your help

How do I best leverage second EMD domain with same keyword as an important page on my other site?
(Fictional domain names and keywords follow) Let's say I have an Adense site called Diets.com And on that site I've got 10 pages for the ten most popular diets, and each of those pages is optimized for the diet name. Let's imagine one of these pages is called, "The low-carb diet." Then I went out and purchased the domain name LowCarbDiet.com. How do I best use this new domain name? My options seem to be: 1. Build an adsense site on LowCarbDiet.com. But isn't it a problem when the the same owner of LowCardDiet.com and Diets.com are trying to rank for the same keyword? The new site would be trying to rank for "low carb diet" and so would the appropriate page on Diets.com. I think Google doesn't like this. True? 2. Make a one-page introductory informational site with no ads on the new LowCarbDiet.com. Have a prominent link from that site to the appropriate page on Diets.com for the reader to get "further information." This link with the proper anchor text should help boost the page in Diets.com in the SERPs. IF Google doesn't dislike that. SO...is one idea better than the other? Are neither a good idea? Is there a better way to utilize this new domain? It's important because this second domain name's keyword is about to get a huge amount of search traffic. The new, parked domain name is currently registered in the same name as the existing site's name. I could change the registration or privacy it, but I assume Google maintains records of all past registered owners, and if so, I can't really hide ownership.

Using a temp redirect or a link to another domain.
Helloooooooo (hey, we're in SEO...surely we need some sound effects as told in dramatic word elongation?) //First - background. I work on a site that does pretty well with search visibility naturally (by 'naturally', I mean it didn't need a lot of optimisation due to the relationships it has with its link network). I work on a site that sells a particular product - green widgets will do - as part of its verticals. Traffic to this section is great, and tends to convert rather well. These green widgets, however, are also part of another site that's part of the client I work for. The larger company was interested to understand what would happen to their conversions if these green widget visits were sent to them instead of staying on-site (namely, that's because they turn a bigger profit over there). So they set up a link on the page on my site to a landing page on theirs. Sure enough, conversions stayed the same on their site, and showed there may be value in keeping that flow active. //Second - question. I see a few options which mainly revolve around not changing anything, but the bigger part of company wants to see that change. My question is this: long term, should I keep the green widgets section of my site there, and use a link that goes to green widgets on the other site, or should I 302 it until they decide on what they want to do with the relationship between the sites? I know...a bit convoluted, but I'd love to get some ideas on what others have experienced in these situations, and what kinds of outcomes can help both sites remain strong. Thanks a ton, guys.
