I have a little different situation compared to most other questions which asks for hreflang and canonical tags for country specific version of websites.

This is an SEO related question and I was hoping to get some insight on your recommendations.

      • We have an existing Australian website - say - ausnight.com.au
      • now we want to launch a UK version of this website - the domain is - uknight.co.uk
      • please note, we are not only changing from .com.au to .co.uk.... but the base domain name as well changed - from ausnight to uknight
      • as you can understand, the audience for both websites is different.

Both websites has most pages same with same contents.... the questions I have is -

      1. Should we put canonical tag on the new website pages?

      2. If we don't put canon tag on new website pages, what is the impact on the SEO ranking of current website?

      3. I believe we need to put hreflang tag on both websites to tell google that we have another language version (en-au vs en-gb) of the same page. Is this correct?

          Hi there,

I don't fully understand what's your issue with canonicals as you made it look like the issue is related to hreflang tag.

          So, answering your questions:

          1. Canonical tags should point to a page that means the same INSIDE the same website. If that's not the case, its a common practice to have self-referential canonical tags.
          2. Not having canonical tags at all **will not impact **your rankings nor its ability to rank higher. With this, you are telling Google that you don't know if there is a better page and let google choose for itself what's the best canonical (if any)
          3. Having different domains for different countries and even with different letters/words is not an issue at all. You have an advantage having ccTLD domains for each country, this means that Google already understands that your website is targeted to that country. If between both websites, you share content and have a set of pages that mean the same but for different countries, then you should add hreflangs so G gets the idea that both sites relate.

Do these comments answer your questions?

          Hope it helps,
          Best luck.
          Gaston

Adding hreflang tags - better on each page, or the site map?

Hello, I am wondering if there seems to be a preference for adding hreflang tags (from this article).  My client just changed their site from gTLDs to ccTLDs, and a few sites have taken a pretty big traffic hit.  One issue is definitely the amount of redirects to the page, but I am also going to work with the developer to add hreflang tags.  My question is - is it better to add them to the header of each page, or the site map, or both, or something else?  Any other thoughts are appreciated.  Our Australia site, which was at least findable using Australia Google before this relaunch, is not showing up, even when you search the company name directly. Thanks!Lauryn

Moving half my website to a new website: 301?

Good Morning! We currently have two websites which are driving all of our traffic. Our end goal is to combine the two and fold them into each other. Can I redirect the duplicate content from one domain to our main domain even though the URL's are different. Ill give an example below. (The domains are not the real domains). The CEO does not want to remove the other website entirely yet, but is willing to begin some sort of consolidation process. ABCaddiction.com is the main domain which covers everything from drug addiction to dual diagnosis treatment. ABCdualdiagnosis.com is our secondary website which covers everything as well. Can I redirect the entire drug addiction half of the website to ABCaddiction.com? With the eventual goal of moving everything together.

NEw domain extensions, are they worth it seo wise?

Hello I am curious if all of these new extensions for domains are worth it? So say you are a home builder and you bought homebuilder.construction - where as construction is a new extension, does this help seo? Or is it all just a big sales gimmick? Thank you for your thoughts

Are pages with a canonical tag indexed?

Hello here, here are my questions for you related to the canonical tag: 1. If I put online a new webpage with a canonical tag pointing to a different page, will this new page be indexed by Google and will I be able to find it in the index? 2. If instead I apply the canonical tag to a page already in the index, will this page be removed from the index? Thank you in advance for any insights! Fabrizio

Include Cross Domain Canonical URL's in Sitemap - Yes or No?

I have several sites that have cross domain canonical tags setup on similar pages.  I am unsure if these pages that are canonicalized to a different domain should be included in the sitemap.  My first thought is no, because I should only include pages in the sitemap that I want indexed. On the other hand, if I include ALL pages on my site in the sitemap, once Google gets to a page that has a cross domain canonical tag, I'm assuming it will just note that and determine if the canonicalized page is the better version.  I have yet to see any errors in GWT about this.   I have seen errors where I included a 301 redirect in my sitemap file.  I suspect its ok, but to me, it seems that Google would rather not find these URL's in a sitemap, have to crawl them time and time again to determine if they are the best page, even though I'm indicating that this page has a similar page that I'd rather have indexed.

Why do SERP Results ( Rankings ) differ from country to country ?

Hi, I have been doing seo for this client based in Sri lanka for almost 8 months now. Since we started SEO we had set up geographic target setting to UK through google webmaster tools. At the moment Site is completely ranking higher on google uk & other countries except Sri Lanka . On Google.lk site doesn't even come within 1st 5 pages for keywords which are ranked on1st page in other countries ? What do you think about this ? How does it happen ?

Serving different content based on IP location

I have city centric website.  For sake of simplicity, say I only have 2 cities -- City A and City B. Depending on a user's IP address, they will either get City A or City B.  Users can change their location through javascript on pages.  But there is no cross-linking between cities.  By this, I mean that unless you can read or execute javascript, there is no way for you to get from city A to City B. My concern is this:  googlebot comes to my site, and we serve them up City A.  How does City B get discovered if Googlebot doesn't read javascript? We have an xml sitemap plus plenty of backlinks to City B.  Is this sufficient? Should I provide a static link to City B (and vice versa) on the homepage for crawling purposes?

Redirecting Canonical 301s and Magento Website

I have an issue with a client's website where it has 3700+ pages, but roughly half of them are duplicates. Thankfully, the only difference between the original and the duplictes is the "?print" at the end of each URL (I suppose this is Magento's way of making a printable page version of the same page. I don't know, I didn't build it.) My questions is, how can I get all the pages like this http://www.mycompany.com/blah.html?print to redirect to pages like this... http://www.mycompany.com/blah.html Also, do they NEED to be Canonical, or will a 301 redirect be sufficient. Also, after having done this, if anybody knows, is there a way I can turn that feature off in Magento, because we're expanding our product line, and I don't want to have to keep chasing after these "?print" pages after the fact.
