Your competitors spend $200 on a link for a year, you spend $200 on 10 quality articles.
After a year they have to renew the same link for another $200, you have the option to generate another 10 articles, either way your original 10 articles are still active.

It's not a big deal, more work if anything.
But I don't believe that .net EMD will bring any exact match boost, only the .co.uk and .com will really give you that (I have done some work with EMD's and that's what I have found).
I suppose the only thing to worry about is if it takes a little longer to rank because it's fresh, im guessing they want the EMD because they think it will have some sort of magical powers to jump to page 1?
I just want to reiterate what Andy said about sitespeed as well, try to have as little plugins as possible.
When you visit a WP site and its super slow, its usually because they have gallery plugins and all sorts running which sucks the life out of the sitespeed.

I'm a big fan of the 'keyword + CTA + Brand' form but sometimes it just flows over 70 chars so to be safe (unless its a big brand) dump the brand term.
One thing im trying to do is not dilute the key terms but at the same time not sound like a robot, I think this structure is a killer for CTR's - Keyword, Keyword, Keyword | Brand.
I think it looks pretty good, and doesn't come across to spammy.
I can see your main heading at the top is a H1 tag, so that's enough on the H1 tag front.
You could squeeze in a H2 but only if you think it fits.
You could try some more semantic words which relate to each other such as 'international' and 'Global' or 'list' and 'database' but I think you might already have these in play.
I think you have already done quite a bit.
I suppose just be a little more selective which plugins you install, some have holes in and once the word is out about particular holes in certain plugins these people will come looking for blogs with it installed.
Redirecting the old website would worry me, it wouldn't surprise me if you redirected the problem along with it.
I would do what you suggested, modal popup with something like 'Hey, we have built a bigger, better website just for you' then block the url pointing out in the robots.txt file.
But that's just me.
I would just rewrite the outbound url to look like sub folder so abc(dot)com/visit and then block the sub folder /visit in the robots.txt file.
I may even run a really good competition and try to suck the users up into a email list so when the time is right, expose the other site.
Its a tough one because you can't indicate the move to another url to Google so it's like starting again but at least you have a few lists and some traffic to the old site.
