The problem is we don't sell scanners, we are a B2B company selling the service of scanning records for companies and turning them into a digital format. It is because of this which makes posting tricky, because we can't post about 'Top 10 Scanners' or 'Top Scanning Companies'.

I have read that competitor link analysis is important, and have begun making a list of their back-link profile of competitors ranking highly for the most sought after keyword terms.

That being said, what would be the criteria for a link which is good enough to have coming into us?

(e.g. Minimum PR, Minimum Page Authority......)

I'm asking because high ranking competitors may have links which we could get a link from which on their own might not be very good to have coming into us.

I understand that when getting links into your site, they need to be good authority but, importantly, also relevant to the information on your own website.

I've seen examples for people to find guest posting opportunities on many sites, but these have been for popular industries with mass amounts of people discussing it (travel blogs, fashion blogs), making guest post opportunities more readily available.

The company I work for provide doc storage, scanning and paperless solutions. As you can guess, when following these guides to find blogs on our industry, I have come up short with places to ask to guest post on!

So, how would SEOmozzers approach building quality, relevant links for a very niche industry such as ours?

Also, we'll be building pages for extremely specific types of files (e.g. Microfiche Scanning, A0 Scanning....). For these pages, how will I be able to find relevant pages on these topics to get a link to, because these will obviously be even more niche than doc scanning?

Hi all.

I have been testing different ways of writing the text on the homepage of the website www document-management-solutions co.uk because we are ranking very low for the keyword Document Management Software.

I've recently learnt about pages being 'cached' and wanted to just clarify something.

The last time the page was cached was on 26th March. I have made changed to the homepage since then and wanted to see how it has affected our ranking.

Will I not be able to know if it has had a positive/negative effect until the next time our page is cached?

I'll follow your advice in a two step process:

1. Is the keyword relevant to us?

then

2. Does the keyword bring up similar companies in Google after a search?

We have different websites targeted at the different services our company provides. (e.g. For our document storage services, we have www.ukdocumentstorage.com. For document management, we have www.document-management-solutions.co.uk).

If we take the storage site for example, every single page has a link in the footer to our document management site, with the anchor text 'Cleardata Document Management'

SEOMoz is telling me that these are seen as external links (as they are on a different URL's), and I'm just clarifying that would this be a major possible factor in the website not ranking highly?

How should I rectify this issue?

To put what I've done into an example:

Our service is selling document storage to companies in the UK. So I searched for the term 'Document Storage' in the keyword tool and after also putting it into Ubersuggest, I have this enormous list of keyword suggestions.

I'm now trying to condense these into terms worth optimising for for when we launch our new website.

But it is actually this process that I am trying to figure out. How do I know which of these terms (which I'm now filtering into the ones relevant to our service) have lower competition and are easier to rank for, whilst still being searched for by people?

Like I said, I understand that the local monthly searches and competition columns don't give a true estimation on how competitive these terms are.

I'm sorry if I'm not putting across my problem well enough! But as you can see I'm at the very initial stage of figuring out just what keywords we want to try to rank for.

I'm wondering if I can get some assistance on keyword research.

I've set out a step-by-step process for myself about how to go about finding a list of keywords we want to optimise our site for. I've used a guide over at http://www.seonick.net/keyword-research to break it down step-by-step.

After using Keyword Tool and Ubersuggest to get a list of keyword suggestions with their local monthly search volumes, I now have an Excel file with  1663 suggestions (yikes!).

It is at this point where I am not 100% sure of what to do with this data & how to figure out which of these terms we should optimise for. I know not to go purely based on the local monthly search volume because that is not based on organic searches.

So how would I go about condensing this into a list of keyword suggestions to target for optimising?

I've just done a search using east england document storage site:ukdocumentstorage.com and found our specific east england document storage page is ranking really low down in our list of pages compared to others.

How could this happen?

So even though the text is different, I should re-direct people clicking on the link to the old document-security to the newer secure-document-storage page?

So my take-way from this is that any pages that I have deleted but are still able to be found the internet (e.g. /document_security) I don't need to worry about actively trying to remove from the internet as it will be removed by Google automatically in the future? And having these pages still existing on the internet (despite not having any current links going to them from pages I haven't deleted) will not harm my site?

I am currently tasked with finding a better way to optimise our website ukdocumentstorage dot com.

For starters, I would like to know what our site structure actually is at present. So I would like to be able to see which pages are linking to what at the moment & which pages have broken links on which I need to remove from the content. Hopefully I'd then be able to tidy up any errors that the site already has in its internal linking.

Is there a way to do this easily? Or to have a graphical representation of the sites structure?

I have just signed into our Webmaster Tools account and I am faced with a list of 10 'Crawl Errors' which are all 404 errors. Some of them do not actually exist anymore, but are still being linked to from a few pages according to WMT.

For example,  /industries_served_legal.htm is still being linked to from 5 of our pages (including /industries_served_local_authority.htm)

However, this doesn't seem to be a case at all on the page as I can't find a link to /industries_served_legal.htm on /industries_served_local_authority.htm. Any advice as to why this is happening? Is there a way to find out easily where these broken links are situated on the page? And if I do actually manage to find our broken links, how would I go about removing them?

The page /document_security.htm doesn't exist in our Sitewizard list of pages anymore, yet still exists online. How do I go about deleting this unecessary page properly? And does this harm our rankings?

The document_security page also has an extra link on the top toolbar to a Document Management page, an addition which is no longer present on our up to date pages. Now this page (and the extra dropdown page when you hover over it) still exist on our list of Sitewizard pages at the moment, but we obviously no longer want to have  these online anymore. How should I remove these?

I understand that this is a lot of information, and so I would appreciate any help that can be given on these!
