2 Question about URL structure
Hello guys
1 - I have a question about the best structure for URLs from the point of view of SEO:
Is it OK to use the URL as
mywebsite.com.br/long-tail-article
Or is better this
mywebsite.com.br/category/long-tail-article
2 - When part of my keyword is already in my "category", for example:
mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing/digital-marketing-is-good
I leave it as it is, or in the following way:
mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing-is-good
NOTE: Do not take into account that this URL would be different from other URLs in this category

Time on page: What happens when I open many tabs?
Hello everyone,
I was studying Analytics, and checked that the time on page is calculated by the diference of the time you entered the page and when you click to go to another one.
But how the time is calculated when I open several links using new tabs in different moments?
Does Google counts the last tab? Just a guess...
Thanks!

RE: Canonical to the page itself?
For e-commerce I think is very important, even more for the big ones, that have a lot of filters of princing or color that are in fact other URLs. There we need to input a canonical.
But for landing pages, N1 deep, that seems like a hotsite, when the company just sells one online service, I can't imagine what kind of benefits using "self canonical" in a page like this.
Sorry for making this longer, I should've chosen Discussion up there!
Answer when you can! =] -
RE: Canonical to the page itself?
Thanks for the attention Peter.
I understand your point about the Homepage.
But what about other pages? Landing pages with canonical to it self?
It seems to me meaningless, or worse, lowering trust, like Bing seems to do, in the link Alan wrote above.
-
RE: Canonical to the page itself?
Thanks Alan,
So, what seems is that "self page canonical" has no clear or even any good points for taking the risk of doing it?
I'm more concerned about Google, once I'm from Brazil, and Google rules 98% of searches...

RE: Canonical to the page itself?
Thanks Stephen!
Can your talk more about the scrape? It was not too clear for me.
Sorry =]

Canonical to the page itself?
Hello,
I'd like to know what happens when you use canonical to the same page itself, like:
Page "example.com"
rel canonical="example.com"
Does that impact in something? Bad or good?
See ya!

RE: RSS Feeds
Oh, that's very specific topic, for IT people!
I don't know that either!
-
RE: RSS Feeds
Exactly! You could make some automatization on that, but that's other subject!
hehehe
-
RE: RSS Feeds
You need to enter in each of the links listed, and submit your post/rss there!
-
RE: RSS Feeds
You can use RSS for two things:
- Send it to your customers/readers, so they can read yours news, and then maybe they will use your content in their social media.
- Submit your RSS feeds to a RSS Directory, that they save your feed and put a link for you
Got it? =]
-
RE: RSS Feeds
Hello,
RSS is good for at least two reasons:
- Your clients/users are constantly exposed to your products/news.
- Give you links
This How-To is the one I use to explain to my interns! Good luck!

RE: Keyword affected by the following word, forming a keyphrase?
Hello,
You're getting it right. If your generical keyword is trasnformed into a new one, more specific, Mr. Google is going to give it a different value.
But if the thing "rice pudding" is what everyone that types jsut "rice" searchs, so it won't be a problem.
And if you put two words together, one keyword and one without meaning, you're not going to be so relevant only by it.
For example: SEOMaster, is clearly SEO + Master.
SEOMoz is not that clear, because the second word has no meaning, and Google will try to understand anything but SEO, so it won't bring much points as the one above.
Hope it helps,

RE: Competitor seo
Hello Michael,
Once I watched Rand talking about this, that maybe spam is not the worst thing that happens.
People sending bad links to you doesn't get your site in bad sheets!
Why? Because Google threats them giving a low value, like a nofollow link.
Exactly for this kind of anti-ethical things.
In fact, the competitor could be making for you a low value link building!
So you should concern about building good links, to make it right.
Check this really good Whiteboard Friday!

RE: Where does Google say this?
I think that you should not take this as true.
It's weird because there are zillions of pages with relevant content that have less than 200 words, mainly news sites.
I'm used to write blog articles around 400 words, that is the standard size for a article.
But, you could ask the writer where did she get that info.
That's why you should put a link to the page where you picked informations.

RE: Root page not coming up first
Let me check your page...
(thinking)
Meta robots is an alternative way to say to Google that he can go to an specific page, but just what you want him to do, like indexing, but nofollowing. The list is below:
The standard is INDEX, FOLLOW, that's why it doesn't appear above.
But I checked your site, it don't have that there, so it's not meta robots.
-
RE: Root page not coming up first
Hello,
It don't appear in any page? Weird...
Maybe robots.txt, meta robots?

Twitter Username: Keyword or Company Name?
Hello everybody!
I'm in doubt with which one is the best:
To have a Twitter profile name with:
1)the company's name.
Of course it's good for branding, but it's a B2B, industrial market.2)a relevant keyword.
Will it bring traffic, considering that is a B2B, that works different. The question is: does Google gives relevance to username with keyword in it? If yes, have it a great value, or should I use the company name?
Thanks! =]

RE: Are we penalized if our meta description is longer than 150-160 characters?
Hello!
Search Engines don't care about Meta Descriptions! It's NOT a Ranking factor.
Although, it's very important because is that text that that appears below the TItle and the URL in the results.
But, 170 characters are the maximum that is showed there. So, this is the recommended maximum number, as you can predict what your potencial customers are going to see.
And it's another chance to write something catchy and get their attention!

RE: Timing of Adding Links -- Guidance Needed
That way it's ok!
You see, Google doesn't like who buys or make some blackhat and unnatural growth.
So, if you can make this growth in a organic look, it's everything gonna be fine!
It's answered now?
; )
-
RE: Timing of Adding Links -- Guidance Needed
Hello Matt!
I see two situations here.
-
If they are linking to different URLs, like different articles and things, there will be no problem at all.
-
If they link only to your homepage, you should be more carefull, and get those links in a bigger time.
Resuming and being more pragmatical : In the first situation, maybe in two weeks it's a good time for it, but try to spread the linking on the more days you can. For the second, maybe a month, and spreading the days of linking you.
Helped you?

RE: Do product pages need unique content or does having duplcate content hurt on those pages?
You're welcome!
I understand your problem, and the canonical cannot solve it. It only works for internal duplicate content.
I saw something about a external canonical, but it looks like you're going to pass your relevance to another site, and you don't want that! ; )
Do you and your competitors have too many duplicated content?
I would suggest you to write your own content in the cases of external duplicate content, and this way go ahead of your competitors!
Have I answered your question?
If so, click the Good Answer button! =] -
RE: Do product pages need unique content or does having duplcate content hurt on those pages?
Hello Garth,
When working with e-commerce sites, they have some unique needs.
In this case, you have some pages that shows some similar products, but with different colors, shapes. But in the end, you have to use the same content for usability, to let the user with some standardized layout.
So, the Search Engines understands this need and in this case we should use the rel="canonical" attribute, to tell them that the targeted page is the most important one.
The canonical should be inserted in the HEAD of all your products directing to it's category page, like this:
In a page of a specific Conference Table, you should use the category page in the tag below:

RE: Aspx filters causing duplicate content issues
Hello Alan!
DON'T use the 301 redirect in this case, because you will certainly create a loop, and then nobody will access the filtered page.
I am optimizing a e-commerce site, that has some duplicated content too.
We are trying just now to use some canonical, and it looks it's going well.
I think that this time your client should pay for, it will surely worth it.
You could also use some meta robots in this case. It can be complementary just with the canonicals.
Here is a good and quick explanation: http://www.robotstxt.org/meta.html
Hope it helps!

RE: Is using "-" in the title of a page to seperate targeted keywords bad for seo purposes?
Hello Jake!
In your title is good that you use the keyword the same form that people search in the SE's.
So, you should use <title></em>Dog Leashes .... <em></title> , and as you may know, the more to the left is better.
Otherwise, in your URL, it's recommended that, if a keyword has two separated words, you use "-".
Hope it helps!

RE: Ecommerce websites' SEO strategy
Hello Mihaly!
Talking about more operating stuff, I think you should study:
- Faceted Navigation - considering almost e-commerce uses this
2)Canonical - to show to the Search Engine where is the most important products
3)Meta Robots - to avoid Content and Title Duplication.
With that in mind, you can think better how you are going to optimize your site.
I think that this three topics is a good start for e-commerce
Hope it helps! =]

RE: Status 404-pages
Hello!
I am seeing a lot of my clients using a 301 when the page doesn't exists redirecting to a well designed 404 page.
But, essentially, the server have to output a 404 HTTP Code and show that fancy 404 page to the user.
After all, the HTTPs codes exists to be used, and this is a important one!
Hope it helps! =]

RE: Duplicate Content
Hello Paul!
Because the URL is different, the crawlers look them as different pages, but as you know, they're not! It's just two ways to get there!
To solve this, you have to redirect the /index page to the non-/index, using the 301 redirection code.
Tutorial here: http://www.tamingthebeast.net/articles3/spiders-301-redirect.htm
Got it?
Hope it helps! =]

RE: What is the best website structure for SEO?
I putted a Heat Map down there. I should you know it.
So, as you can see, the navigation bar don't even shows any color. So i would recommend you to use the links just in the navigation, and use the left column spot to put other thing, some very attractive link, like best selling products maybe.
You should use some Breadcrumbs below the navigation bar as the user gets deeper in the site. This is more for usability.
I would suggest you to put in the Main Bar just a major category, like Door Articles. And then in it the user can choose between then, if he wants door handles, door hinges, door locks...
It helped this way?
-
RE: What is the best website structure for SEO?
Hello!
- The best URL would it be if you just put the door-handles straight from the home, less deeper. Like this:
http://doorhandle.ie/door-handles
http://doorhandle.ie/door-hinges
http://doorhandle.ie/door-locks
....- To optimize your Home, you have to put the minimum links you can. Put just one link for DOOR HANDLES, or for DOOR LOCKS. But you choose where to put, at the left column or the top bar. Now you have to think about your users.
When you create a www, you have to use one as the main one. So redirect this actual one to the www version using 301 redirecting.
I would recommend you also put some keywords in H1 (just one tag of these in each page), about what the page is.
And use some rel=nofollow on the links that is not strictly of your business, like support, privacy policy or about us.
Hope it helps! =]

RE: What is link juice - and how do I utilise it?
Hello Benjamin!
Let's start from here:
When a site have a good combination of some things like Page Rank, Authority and Trustfulness, Google looks to this site as a relevant one on the Web.
So, imagine if this site links to yours using the rel="nofollow" (the link needs this attribute to make the "juice" flow http://www.w3schools.com/html5/att_a_rel.asp), the Search Engine thinks: "Well, if it's a good site sending to another, this second one must have some relevance too!".
Now, your site is going to be seen from a better perspective by the Search Engines. The "juice" is like the relevance, and so to "link juice" is when you kind of share it to another one.
And this can be done using yours site internal links too! Linking your Homepage to another for example. But, of course it's not to be going so great as another site linking to you...you can imagine, if you talk about what you are is good, but what do other people talk about is much better. Google thinks also that way!
But in the end, link juice can be talked as when a site passes relevance to your by linking you with nofollow.
Hope it helps! =]

RE: Using new domain in existing website
Hello!
As I undesrtand your question, I don't know if DNS redirection has something about it. Maybe I didn't get your question right...
But, the best way to redirect something is using 301, as it is permanent, and the search engines will crawl it just fine.
Maybe, another way is creating a subdomain for the specific country, like:
Hope it helps! =]

RE: Keyword whit accent (é, è, ê) ?
Hello!
I'm from Brazil and also thought about that, so let's see:
If I search about café or cafe (it means coffee in portuguese), the Google Adwords broad match doesn't care much, it gets them as the same, with Local Search Volume of 3,500,000 for both.
But in the Google Adwords Exact Match, it goes different:
Local Search Global Search
café 27,100 60,500
cafe 18,100 246,000
So, it seem that you can use in theory both keyword for Broadsearch, but you are going to lose some when it goes Exact.
So you have to see which one is the best one for you, that brings more traffic and at the same time a good conversion.
1)You're going to have a keyword ranking for each of the words.
2)I don't recommend you to hide a "no accent keyword" because Google can see it as a Black Hat and punish you.
3)And if some of the words don't make sense without the accent, you should use them with it, because you can't forget your users, because won't make sense to them either. Therefore, it's going to have a big bounce rate.
Hope it helps! =]

Directories and Link Building
I was reading a post by Eric Enge, http://www.seomoz.org/blog/role-of-directories-in-link-building
and nobody talked about in the comments, so I want to see what you think:
Considering that get some bad links from punished directories is bad for your site, it's worth to use site submissions softwares, like SubmitEaze, that promisses a 1,000 submits?
Do you use it, what you think about it?[title edited by staff for clarity]
