Mark, glad you like the blog. I'm writing more at Search Engine Land these days if you want to check it out. The other columnists writing about mobile search usually also have great things to say.
I wrote a column recently on how to best optimize a mobile site, and wouldn't recommend responsive design if you're not simply duplicating the desktop site. In fact, though there is debate about how to build a mobile site for visibility in search, even proponents of one URL like Michael Martin would not recommend responsive design without a one to one relationship.
Good luck!

Mike, thanks for the mention. Appreciate it. I also wrote a separate column in Search Engine Land on mobile link building if you're interested, Mark.
Mike, I agree with you frequently, but there are two things you said here that I strongly disagree with:
- "Aside from the queries that return hyperlocal results the only true differentiation for mobile search over Desktop is made for dump phones like Motorola RAZRs and early Blackberrys rather than iPhones and Androids. "
Google actually has a smartphone Googlebot now, which they use to present mobile sites in smartphone search results. It's called skip redirect/Old Possum and I have pictures of it in the wild here. Beyond that I've actually detailed 14 differences between desktop and smartphone search results, though I agree they can seem similar at first glance.
- "You should use the stylesheet in order to make use of link equity garnered by the desktop site."
This is a popular myth, as mobile URLs that are duplicates can rank without link equity due to Google's inclusion of mobile URLs through smartphone Googlebot. In addition, it misses opportunities from creating mobile content to address mobile search behavior, as I've explained most recently in Search Engine Land here. Better to build your site using a hybrid model with both responsive and dedicated mobile URLs.
As you say, there is a split in the SEO community, but I have yet to see proponents of responsive design argue against the missed opportunities with mobile content or display evidence of split link equity preventing mobile content from ranking on smartphones. If you have it, I'd love to see it.
As always, love to see others discussing mobile SEO, and trying to come closer to standards for this relatively early discipline.

Hey Mark,
Aside from the queries that return hyperlocal results the only true differentiation for mobile search over Desktop is made for dump phones like Motorola RAZRs and early Blackberrys rather than iPhones and Androids. With that said the only difference for link building is that you should be submitting your site to mobile directories. Here is a short list of those directories to get you started.
Also there tends to be a big split amongst users over whether or not to use a full separate mobile site rather than just a mobile stylesheet. You should use the stylesheet in order to make use of link equity garnered by the desktop site.
Let me know if you have anymore questions!
-Mike

Is Forum Link Building a Waste of Time in 2018?
Hi there, this is a general question about link building strategies in 2018. It actually relates to reports derived from the link building audit tool on SEMrush, so forgive that. We use Moz as well, it's just that we happen to be working in SEMrush for link analysis. Basically, the audit tool looks at our links and our competitors' links. It has come back with a number of 'opportunities' for link building and I'm questioning the value of many of them, in 2018. Many of the 'opportunities' the tool is suggesting we explore include answering forum questions on places like Reddit, Quora, etc. The tool has been good at identifying topical threads which might hold promise (a very specific branch of legal services) but most of the threads are 3 - 8 years old. To answer them, I would need to muster someone with expertise to post a relevant answer. So, obviously, my question is does anyone think there is any value in this sort of link building in this day and age? I really think our greatest value will be in guiding their content strategy and looking for content creation opportunities on high authority sites. Thoughts?

Internal Link Building and Link Juice Quality
Hi There! I manage the website for a law office that covers many geographical locations. For very specific niche content, we would prefer to create one piece of content and link to the various geographic locations where we would handle that topic instead of posting multiple variations of the same content for each specific geographical area. If we put a button on these pages that has links to each location, will that have the same "link juice" effect to the pages we're linking that linking directly in the text would? (example: the Where can we help you? button on this page : http://www.zdfirm.com/volkswagen-recall/) Thank you!

Looking for a trusted link building service
Can anyone recommend a service to build quality links to our site and work with us on a content strategy, preferably UK based? We have recently recovered from a link penalty and whilst this has been removed we now need to re-build a quality bank link profile. I've looked into the Moz recommendations but not many seem to be based in the UK or if that doesn't matter then I'd be interested to know people's experience. Basically, since the penalty we've become very nervous about link building even though we didn't necessarily create the problem! As a small team we've looked to outsource this and have looked at VA's but not confident the links they will achieve will be of good quality

Link Building for lower budgets that work on 2012
Hello, I think many of us have re-plan their SEO strategy since the latest updates from Google and we all saw that coming anyway. We already know that link building using Directories, Article sites, Link exchange, profiles, footer/side links, paid links, press releases and other have been devalued or not working at all. For low budget websites and websites that cannot afford fresh/valued updated content or other link baiting techniques there arent much left. I my self found that Social Media and Blogging (Guest posts) are they only techniques left for websites that cannot manage to get natural links. Also i have realized that On-page optimization is getting more attention again. We all have great ideas of acquiring links but what we do when time and budget is limited? Google promotes natural link building but how you supposed to get natural links from a new low reputation website? I kinda of like the new approach since it will make SEO work a lot of harder and eliminate the easy path success. It will also focus the SEO job more on On-page and on great content. But this is getting a lot of harder for new websites with lower budgets and lower time to consume on SEO. I deeply know the answer of my question but i would like your opinion also and of course if anyone would like to share some ideas or know-how to discuss is welcome.

Clarification needed regarding link building
We are working on a SEO project for a client with a bilingual site. We have already started with the link building task for the English domain. However, for the Arabic domain the URLs for the inner pages are not yet finalized and it would take around 2 months to do so. I would like to know whether we could start with link building for the main Arabic domain although the inner pages URLs are not yet finalized?

Who here outsources your link building?
Anyone here run an agency? Do you outsource your link building to another company overseas so it's cheap, or what is everyone else doing nowadays?
