SEO Agency Sabotage?
-
Here's a strange one ...
We have a customer that has done remarkably well with organic SEO for the better part of 8 years. We've made them tons of money with our SEO techniques. About a year ago they started to get calls from a certain SEO firm warning that they were losing landing pages and keywords by the hundreds each month. Revenue continued to rise so they did not think much of it. Either did we.
My customer finally relented and hired them for some limited SEO activites in Jan/Feb of this year - unbeknownst to me. The "other company" assembled some stats to demonstrate the drop in organic rankings, landing pages, keywords, and traffic going back about year. This data was matched to correlate with variuos Google updates and designed to scare the customer.
Long story short and my question - has anyone ever heard of an SEO company sabotaging a potential customer so they would hire them? We ran analysis and turns out our customer actually gained landing pages and keywords while this company was calling on them and claiming impending doom. Turns out, since my customer brought them on, the numbers have gone way south. Now, we look like the incompetent boobs and they will likely "fix something" to look like rock stars.
They claimed that the Penguin update is what killed the site, but the slippage started before Penguin, huh?
It would make sense to call on a prospect for a while, warn of bad stuff about to happen, make something bad happen and then say, "I told you so, hire me".
Has anyone ever hear of this? If so, any particular tactic I should look for?

Thanks EGOL, I appreciate your kind words.

I really like Paul's advice. Deserves more than a "thumbs up".

Might be worth bringing this thread to your clients attention, to show them that the tactic the other company used to falsely gain their trust, that it isn't unheard of and is in fact common practice.
Then diagnose the issues, come up with a solid plan and offer to bring their SERPs back up to the point they were, before the new client come along.
Reinforce that for years, you proved yourself again and again and no sooner had this new company come along, their rankings drop.
To be honest, if the client still cannot see the light, walk away knowing you've done all you can. Their fate will be in the hands of the dodgy SEO company.
They'll come crawling back some day, asking for you to fix their mess.

As an in-house SEO I've seen a variety of attempts to scare, trick or otherwise confuse our MD into using certain companies. It never ceases to amaze me the depths to which some firms will stoop. I understand the method you speak of is a fairly common tactic amongst IT security businesses, too. Cause a problem yourselves, then become the saviour.
-
It's surprising the lengths some companies go to, or maybe not.
What's your relationship like with the client? Who are they blaming for the drop?
I would offer to get to the bottom of what's going on, find out what the competitor SEO company have been up to (if anything), diagnose the reasons behind the drop and fix them.
-
Yes, we heard that... )-:
You right - Phone calls more often (not just when bad things happened) is a good tactic.
What we do @ Search3w is charging the hard cost money upfront and if the client decides to leave - Nothing can stop him, but we lose no money.
My tactic is to ask the client to share any emails or phone calls he gets that are SEO related directly with me (the CEO) and they trust me to provide them honest reply.
Yes, this is totally true - I told clients several times: Yes, this is a good deal. This company looks reliable, but just one thing - Keep me in the loop (for small retainer fee) to keep eyes on them. It works!

Do You Work At Home As An SEO Or Have An Office?
I'm curious how many of you all work at home or mostly at home either through an company or freelance. Or are most of you employed at a corporation? My company was recently bought by a very large global company. Recently I found out that all the SEO and web design is contracted through outside sources. With the headquarters in Europe, this being my primary job function I kinda feel well you know.... down.. Websites I put my life into for the last 7 years are going to be handed over to a corporation to do with whatever they feel they should. I know they were never really mine, but when you spend so much of your life to making them the best you can, so much so to attract the attention of a global billion dollar company, you should feel great right? But I feel like my dog just died. I don't have a bad impression of the company but the shift of moving me to the IT guy has begun. Normal web updates I would have done, are now being pushed aside. I don't hate IT I like helping others, but I really loved being able to make a difference through the web. Now I'm left contemplating my future, big corporations have so much bs, I just don't feel comfortable. I would really appreciate you all giving me your thoughts and tell me about any similar experiences you have had in your life. Cheers, Don

How to Find A SEO Guru?
How to find a SEO Guru I am a looking for a SEO to take over our SEO needs for our website.I am not interested in learning SEO and would rather leave it to the pro's.We already have great traffic 800K+ monthly but we need to take it to the next level and beyond. I have searched through SEOMOZ and read articles everywhere and done all that, I think I am more confused now than when I started on how to find a great SEO. While their are plenty of great SEO guys out their a lot of them I don't feel comfortable putting our business in their hands.Their are some smaller SEO's and some shady SEO's that won't work for us.Then some just don't have the credentials or background for us to hand over our hard earned money and have the future of our businesses in their hands. We want someone who has worked on big projects and had great success and is a industry leader but is willing to work with me and be hands on just not send me reports and suggestions. I am Trying to find SEO guru who knows his stuff and knows it well.I know i will pay good money for this but would like to find some up and comers so I don't have to sell unborn children to afford their services. What would be a good way to a great seo maybe even a guru? Finding the right SEO has become a daunting task.

Help! I need to hire a SEO / SEM Specialist - Am I asking for too much?!
Hey all! I'm expanding my in-house marketing team and I need to add an SEO / SEM Specialist that will strategize, execute & manage the following: Organic SEO PPC across multiple channels (Google, Bing & also social sites like Facebook) Remarketing & Display marketing Banner ads Retargeting We're a lean company that's all about doing more with less. But not being very familiar with the SEO / SEM world I'm afraid I'm asking for too much! What do you guys think? What's your experience been? If you do think that this is potentially a single position, what would be the best title for attracting talent? SEO / SEM Specialist? Digital Marketing Manager? With the research I've done - jobs / titles have been totally across the board! I'm not able to find much consistency. Thank you all for your help 🙂 It's greatly appreciated!!!!!

What is the best method for getting pure Javascript/Ajax pages Indeded by Google for SEO?
I am in the process of researching this further, and wanted to share some of what I have found below. Anyone who can confirm or deny these assumptions or add some insight would be appreciated. Option: 1 If you're starting from scratch, a good approach is to build your site's structure and navigation using only HTML. Then, once you have the site's pages, links, and content in place, you can spice up the appearance and interface with AJAX. Googlebot will be happy looking at the HTML, while users with modern browsers can enjoy your AJAX bonuses. You can use Hijax to help ajax and html links coexist. You can use Meta NoFollow tags etc to prevent the crawlers from accessing the javascript versions of the page. Currently, webmasters create a "parallel universe" of content. Users of JavaScript-enabled browsers will see content that is created dynamically, whereas users of non-JavaScript-enabled browsers as well as crawlers will see content that is static and created offline. In current practice, "progressive enhancement" in the form of Hijax-links are often used. Option: 2

In order to make your AJAX application crawlable, your site needs to abide by a new agreement. This agreement rests on the following: The site adopts the AJAX crawling scheme. For each URL that has dynamically produced content, your server provides an HTML snapshot, which is the content a user (with a browser) sees. Often, such URLs will be AJAX URLs, that is, URLs containing a hash fragment, for example www.example.com/index.html#key=value, where #key=value is the hash fragment. An HTML snapshot is all the content that appears on the page after the JavaScript has been executed. The search engine indexes the HTML snapshot and serves your original AJAX URLs in search results. In order to make this work, the application must use a specific syntax in the AJAX URLs (let's call them "pretty URLs;" you'll see why in the following sections). The search engine crawler will temporarily modify these "pretty URLs" into "ugly URLs" and request those from your server. This request of an "ugly URL" indicates to the server that it should not return the regular web page it would give to a browser, but instead an HTML snapshot. When the crawler has obtained the content for the modified ugly URL, it indexes its content, then displays the original pretty URL in the search results. In other words, end users will always see the pretty URL containing a hash fragment. The following diagram summarizes the agreement:
