Found a Typo in URL, what's the best practice to fix it?
-
Wordpress 3.4, Yoast, Multisite
The URL is supposed to be "www.myexample.com/great-site"
but I just found that it's "www.myexample.com/gre-atsite"
It is a relatively new site but we already pointed several internal links to "www.myexample.com/gre-atsite"
What's the best practice to correct this? Which option is more desirable?
1.Creating a new page
I found that Yoast has "301 redirect" option in the Advanced tap
Can I just create a new page(exact same page) and put noindex, nofollow and redirect it to http://www.myexample.com/great-site
OR
2. htacess redirect rule
simply change the URL to http://www.myexample.com/great-site
and update it, and add
Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^http://www.myexample.com/gre-atsite$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.myexample.com/great-site$1 [R=301,L] -
Thank you Dan!
Wordpress 3.4 did have some redirecting features. but it didn't correct typos
so our solution was just fix the URL, changed all the internal links and used 301 direct using an example here
If anyone facing this problem, here is your answer!

Hi
I actually think WordPress now does the redirects and fixes internal links now when you update the permalink. Try just updating it and see if they get fixed. (Although it may not catch internal links you've added within posts etc, just in the main menu).
If WordPress doesn't do this, just change the URL, change all internal links as needed and also use a 301 redirect.
A fast way to look for bad internal links is with Screaming Frog SEO Spider.
Hope that helps!

Why not just use Redirect 301 /gre-atsites http://www.myexample.com/great-site ?
-
Dont use redirects if you can avoid it, they do not pass all the link juice,
Make the correct page, and fix the internal links. delete the old page.

Website blog is hacked. Whats the best practice to remove bad urls
Hello So our site was hacked which created a few thousand spam URLs on our domain. We fixed the issue and changed all the spam urls now return 404. Google index shows a couple of thousand bad URLs. My question is- What's the fastest way to remove the URLs from google index. I created a site map with sof the bad urls and submitted to Google. I am hoping google will index them as they are in the sitemap and remove from the index, as they return 404. Any tools to get a full list of google index? ( search console downloads are limited to 1000 urls). A Moz site crawl gives larger list which includes URLs not in Google index too. Looking for a tool that can download results from a site: search. Any way to remove the URLs from the index in bulk? Removing them one by one will take forever. Any help or insight would be very appreciated.

'domain:example.com/' is this line with a '/' at the end of the domain valid in a disavow report file ?
Hi everyone Just out of curiosity, what would happen if in my disavow report I have this line : domain:example.com**/** instead of domain:example.com as recommended by google. I was just wondering if adding a / at the end of a domain would automatically render the line invalid and ignored by Google's disavow backlinks tool. Many thanks for your thoughts

Shortening URL's
Hello again Mozzers, I am debating what could be a fairly drastic change to the company website and I would appreciate your thoughts. The URL structure is currently as follows Product Pages
Technical SEO | | ATP
www.url.co.uk/product.html Category Pages
www.url.co.uk/products/category/subcategory.html I am debating removing the /products/ section as i feel it doesn't really add much and lengthens the url with a pointless word. This does mean however redirecting about 50-60 pages on the website, is this worth it? Would it do more damage than good? Am i just being a bit OCD and it wont really have an impact? As always, thanks for the input0 -
Best way to redirect friendly URL in direct mail ?
Hi, When we do direct mail to our customers talking about a specific product we sell we usually put a link in the letter so the customer can go directly to the product just by typing a short link, something like:
Technical SEO | | BigJoe
www.example.com/blue-widget This link will then re-direct to:
www.example.com/shop/product/brand-name-big-blue-widget-with-green-ends-200m-50diameter.php Which we are happy with at the moment but I want to check we are doing it correctly in terms of redirects, we currently re-direct it using .htaccess like:
Redirect /blue-widget http://www.example.com/shop/product/brand-name-big-blue-widget-with-green-ends-200m-50diameter.php This re-directs it as a 302 but should it be done as a 301 ? I am not sure why we did 302's to start with but I am thinking they should be 301's, I think it might have been because the URL we were redirecting from was imaginary ? Also should we use the Redirect line in the .htaccess or should we do each one with a RewriteRule ? Thanks BigJoe0 -

Best practice for eCommerce site migration, should I 301 redirect or match URLs on new site
Hi Guys, I have been struggling with this one for quite some time. I am no SEO expert like many of you, rather just a small business owner trying to do the right thing, so forgive me if I say something that makes no sense 🙂 I am moving our eCommerce store from one platform to another, in the process the store is getting a massive face lift. The part I am struggling with is whether I should keep my existing URL structure in place or use 301 redirects to create a cleaner looking URLs. Currently the URLs are a little long and I would love to move to a /category/product_name type format. Of course the goal is not to lose ranking in the process, I rank pretty well for several competitive phrases and do not want to create a negative impact. How would you guys handle this? Thanks, Dinesh
