Evergreen content: Dedicated section or blog posts?
-
As part of our content strategy we are creating an ongoing series of articles to help both our potential buyers and our users learn about our product and improve their knowledge of industry best practices in general.
Internally, we've had some debate as to where we should host this content within our site. We've identified two approaches:
- Series of blog posts
- Dedicated knowledge section of the website
If we go with the first approach, we would created a dedicated section that indexed all the blog posts. If we went with the second, we'd create blog posts for each of the articles announcing their addition.
Is there any difference, SEO wise with the two approaches? What would you recommend?
Thanks,
Darren.

Both are great options if done right. My suggestion would be:
Use your blog, create a parent category attach a description etc... if need be use child categories & attach descriptions. Use tags wherever possible, do not go over board and remain relevant. Post your articles within the appropriate child categories. You could maximize this effort by having people subscribe to your "post series" they opt-in via email and every time there is a new post a message would be sent to the subscribers. This allows you to stay connected and relevant while building leads. IMO the SEO benefits are greater using a blog as blog posts offer 2way communication, & have a greater tendency to drive traffic & can be optimized easier in and tend to (IMO) be indexed quicker.
This is a very condensed version of strategy for what you described but as a general rule of thumb anything dynamic that will require 2-way communication or constant updating / new material is best suited for a blog & anything static that is updated rarely etc... is best reserved for pages.
A Knowledge Base for your site is a good idea still and can be optimized. But for the sounds of what you are describing a blog post series would make more sense. IMO.

If we went with the second, we'd create blog posts for each of the articles announcing their addition.
This is what we do. We have a blog that gets six to ten shout-outs of news every day - mostly pointing to other websites in our industry or on news sites that have a relevant article (this content is not evergreen). Our own content (which is evergreen) is place on an article page and a blog annoucement is used to get the word out - because we have a nice list of people who subscribe to the blog feed using Feedburner RSS or email.
We also have a retail site with a blog. It gets lots of "how to" articles that might have 1000 works and a few images. Although these are published through a wordpress blog the posts are organized by interest level on category pages on our website - not in blog category format (which is by date).

Blog pages have more value than the knowledge section static pages. Also blog posts and knowledge section contents should have different tones. From user perspective, normal users will like to read blogs instead of knowledge section which used to attract serious users.
So blending both will be the right approach.

Is Publishing Content from a Book to your Site Considered Duplicate Content?
It is a book we don't own, either. Would you need to somehow find the original and rel=canonical it? Or is this just all around bad to do? Thanks.

Global Blogs vs Regionalised blogs
Im in the process of launching a blog. The blog will be for global audience. If I wanted to target a more specific region in the future example UK would it be advisable to launch a separate blog for the UK market or how could I regionalise the posts if I kept blogging on the Global blog.

Modifying Content to Avoid Duplicate Content Issues
We are planning to leverage specific posts from a US-based blog for our own Canadian blog (with permission, of course) but are aware that this can cause duplicate content issues. We're willing to re-write as much or as little as we must from the initial blog posts to avoid duplicate content issues but I have no idea just how much we will need to re-write. Is there some guideline for this (e.g., 25% of content must be re-written)? I've been unable to find anything. Thank you in advance!

What is your take on using Google images for blogs
In your opinion, do you think it is okay to use Google images for your blog posts as long as it credits or includes a link to the site in which you located it? We tried looking at stock art for some license-free photos and had no luck in coming up with good pictures. What rules or guidelines do you follow when looking for pictures for your customers blog (or your own)? A lot of our posts have to do with "what to do in this city" or "Where to go in this city". Do you think it's okay to use Google images for these types of posts?

Blog Benefits
I read a very interesting answer by Andy Solo to a previous question in which he replied: "Use your blog to create some Tips & How-To's, optimize those blog entries for the long tail keywords and soon enough your blog will be the gateway into your website. Learn how to target longl-tail keyword searches and how to analyze keyword competition to find the right niche blog posts to create". With my own company site, www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk which has a long-standing blog attached, www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk/blog I always felt that the blog content greatly aided our top positions in Google.co.uk. However, over the last 12 months we have slipped right down page one and I wondered if the blog is still helping our site or if the emphasis/value has switched and Google is looking at a lot of other factors where we score badly? What is the best way to get around duplicate content when you are advertising exactly the same content on two different sites?
I am currently trying to improve exposure for an online degrees website but the content for the degree program pages is exactly the same as the company's main website. What would you suggest for getting around the duplicate content issue as a lot of the curriculum content will obviously be the same for each module, etc? Thanks
