Forum being heavily penalised
-
Hi everyone,
I've just signed up for Moz and I'm getting well and truly stuck in. I have just completed my first site crawl and have a frightening 5,363 errors and 25,319 warnings.
The main culprit is the forum on my site, it contains hundreds of pages dating from as far back as 2002. It is full of Duplicate Content, Duplicate page titles and a fair few 404 errors where old links are now outdated.
Can anyone advise what would be the best course of action? Should I hide the whole forum from Google's robots? My only concern with doing this is the loss of hundreds of pages of regularly updated content which I feel is boosting SEO.
Help!
Thanks guys

Your welcome. If that was your issue and you have a lot of pages, I am sure this will help a lot.
Have a great day and happy holidays.

Great advice Matthew, I have actually gone through and setup dynamic meta tags as you suggested, I'm hoping that should get rid of the majority of duplicate titles.
Mafiasecurity - The software is Snitz Forums 2000.
Thanks for your answers guys!

What software are you using for the forum? phpBB, SMF, YaBBa, vB, IPB, MyBB etc?
-
Are you referring to duplicate meta titles or actually pages that are the same>
if it is meta then I would personally setup dynamic meta tags as a quick fix. I would then make it pull from the titles of each post , this way you will have unique meta tags and cut down on some errors quickly. You can obviously still define the pages you want to define like your home page with manual tags instead of dynamic.
Again that is a quick fix instead of going over 1000's of pages all at once. This is better than hiding the whole site.
Have a great night.

I am not an expert on forums.
In general, you can noindex/follow the individual threads if they are causing a problem.
The category pages might be SEOed to pull traffic and they could be planned to pull traffic on valuable topics.
But, before those things are done you should get an assessment from someone who has watched and experimented with forums to get best results.
That's about all I can say on this topic.

Thanks for your reply EGOL.
I agree that hiding the whole forum wouldn't be the greatest idea but I just wonder how heavily my main site is being penalised due to the thousands of Duplicate Page Titles / Content in my forum?
Is there a way of hiding just the page titles of my forum pages or is it all or nothing?
Thanks again
Gareth

"Should I hide the whole forum from Google's robots?"
Heavens, NO.
If you want good, reliable, actionable advice a lot more information will be needed.
Anybody who tosses out ideas based upon what you shared is shooting at a blurry target.
Also, this type of problem is not one that can be diagnosed by a person who spends 20 minutes surfing through your website and 20 minutes typing you an answer. They will probably need to get under the hood.
Consider hiring someone who has experience with the forum software that you are using and knows how to structure them for optimum treatment by google.

What's more valuable, a Blog or a Forum, and how to integrate?
We want to start a blog or forum (maybe eventually both) and are unsure what is the best way to publish it from an SEO standpoint. If the blog is published on our domain, like domain.com/blog then that obviously helps the site but if the base site is a for-profit business wouldn't it get less credibility, eyeballs, links as opposed to if you started the blog as it's own separate community on a separate domain and then just strategically linked to the for profit site (sponsorship links)? Essentially the question is, if I'm the Lucky Soday Company, do I start a Blog on the Lucky Soda website, or do I start a separate website to grow a soft drink enthusiast community blog / forum? I would guess a blog has more SEO potential than a discussion forum?

Multiple Author Rich Snippets On A Q&A Forum Page
Hi, I work on a site that has a robust q&a forum. Members post questions and other members answer the questions. The answers can be lengthy, often by experts with Google+ pages and almost always by multiple member/commenters answering a particular question. Much like Moz's forum here. In order to get rich snippets results in search for a single Q&A page, what would happen if each of, for instance, 10 commenters on a page, were tagged as author? After all, the q/a forum pages have many authors, each as author of their own comments. Or, should I pick one comment out of many and call that member/commenter the author or something else? If it matters, the person asking the question in the forum is almost always not the expert providing a ton of detailed content. Also, a question might be 8 words. One answer might be 25 to 500 or more and their might be 5 to 10 different answers. Thanks! Cheers... Darcy

Delete or not delete old/unanswered forum threads?
Hello everyone, here is another question for you: I have several forum postings on my websites that are pretty old and so they are sort of "dead discussion" threads. Some of those old discussion threads are still getting good views (but not new postings), and so I presume may be valuable for some users. But most of them are just answers to personal questions that I doubt someone else could be interested in. Besides that, many postings are just single, unanswered questions still waiting for an answer, forgotten, they are just sitting there, and will probably stay unanswered for years.... I don't think this may be good for SEO, am I right? How do you suggest to approach this kind of issues on forums or discussions sections on a website? I am eager to know your thoughts on all this. Thank you in advance! All the best, Fab.

Can Forum Signature Links be a positive thing?
Hello, I'm a relatively active member for a website support forum for the Genesis Framework - studiopress.com/forums. Right now I have a plain text signature, but I am thinking about linking to my website (a WordPress Development Firm) with branded anchor text. I understand the risk of Penguin for non-branded, keyword-heavy anchor text -- but If I do this with simply a link to my website's homepage or Genesis development page, do you think i'd be at risk? Thanks Zach

Building A Forum
I want to build a forum, and I was wondering, can anyone please help me find an open source platform for building it? I want it to be custom and I want to create my own rules. Also I want this forum to be about all topics, is that going to be an issue?

How to tell if you have been penalised?
Hey Guys, Something is seriously going on with the SEO on my website and it's become business critical. We were ranked first on Google for phrases like 'Advertising agency Cambridge' and all of a sudden we have been dropped, not even ranking. To me this screams a penalisation but I can't understand why. I have never paid for links or done anything out of the ordinary that would get such a negative impact. Is there a way to check if a site has actually been penalised and find the reason? What would be the best course of action to appeal? Has anyone experienced something like this and have a timeframe for resolution? Thanks, Gareth
