Is page rank lost through a 301 redirect?
-
Hi everyone. I'd really appreciate your help with this one
I've just watched Matt Cutt's video 'what percentage of PageRank is lost through a 301 redirect?' and I am confused. I had taken this to mean that a re-direct would always lose you page rank, but watching it again I am not so sure.
He says that the amount of page rank lost through a 301 redirect is the same as any other link. Does this mean that no page rank at all is lost during site migrations? Or is it the case that first page rank would be lost from the original link and then more page rank would be lost from any subsequent redirects?

Yes it does.Thanks Chris!

John,
301 redirects are the appropriate way to transition content from one url to another if you are concerned about preserving the algorithmic footprint of the former page because it has the least impact on that footprint.  A link and a 301 pass approximately the same link juice but they're used in different ways.  The link goes from one existing page to another, while the 301 redirect is implemented at the server level to send all visitors requesting a particular page to a pre-selected alternate page.  Make sense?
-
Hi Tom, that makes sense Thanks for your reply and for your excellent response!

Hi John
I'll try to lay this out with some very broad examples.
Page A has 1000 PageRank (PR). Page B has 0 PR. Page C has 0 PR.
Page A then links to Page B with a dofollow link.
Page B now has 950 PR. It then links to Page C with a dofollow link.
Page C now has 900 PR.
With every link, a portion of the original PR is lost. Â Not all of the original PR, link "equity" or "authority" is ever passed 100% with a link. Â This has always been the case.
Now, what most SEOs previously thought was that, in addition to the PR that is always lost when linking to another site, a 301 redirect would also make some of the PR disappear.
So, with the first example, it would be:
Page A (with a PR score of 1000) is 301 redirected to Page B (with 0 PR)
Page B now has 900 PR - 50 was lost with the link, PLUS another 50 because it was a 301.
What the Matt Cutts video tries to clarify is that the extra 50 points that we thought we lost with a 301 redirect is actually a myth - there's no extra value lost just because it is a 301.
I hope that helps to clarify the point? Remember, my example is a very broad one used to illustrate the point and there are always other factors at play that could effect the amount of PageRank that is passed. Â But, all things equal, the same amount of PageRank will pass to another site, regardless if the original page links to it or is redirected to the new page. Some PageRank is always lost in the linking process.
Any questions let me know and I'll be happy to clarify!

URL structure change for pages without traffic: 301 redirect or not ?
Hi, I am just starting with MOZ PRO and trying to handle the high priority issues, starting with pages with 4XX Client Error. I am wondering what we should do with pages with no traffic and no external links. For instance: So time ago we change the URL structure of our blog to a flatter one, and so eg we moved a page: from: domain-name/dla-rodzicow/poradniki/poradniki-po-markach/vilac/vilac-zabawki-z-dusza to:Â domain-name/dla-rodzicow/poradniki/marka-vilac/vilac-zabawki-z-dusza/ Still not very flat but this is not the point. MOZ PRO shows we are having internal links to the old url. According to MOZ PRO, we don't have external links. According to Analytics we have no traffic on the old page. So now we changed the internal link, and I am wondering whether we should 301 redirect the old page to the new one, or whether a sitemap update is enough for this kind of pages ? Thanks in advance for your help.

Robots txt. in page with 301 redirect
We currently have a a series of help pages that we would like to disallow from our robots txt. The thing is that these help pages are located in our old website, which now has a 301 redirect to current site. Which is the proper way to go around? 1- Add the pages we want to disallow to the robots.txt of the new website? 2- Break the redirect momentarily and add the pages to the robots.txt of the old one? Thanks

301 Redirects on Large Real Estate Website
Hi guys,We are about to move over to a new website and need advice on handling the 301 redirects. We have a large real estate website with around 12,000 pages, a lot of these are properties (about 10,000)On our old website, the url structure for each property is as follows -domainname.com/property/view?property=14863on our new site, the url structure isdomainname.com/properties/view/6137The property ID number is always different from old site to new. The way we see it, we have two options. a.) a manual redirect of each and every property url. A very very long jobb.) a folder level redirect, so redirect the 'property' folder on the old site into the 'properties' folder on new. The con with this one is we are not sure if this is the best route to take, if it is how we would go about it?Some advice would be really appreciated guys. I know there are some hyper intelligent SEO's in here and we need to make sure we handle this right! Many thanks in advance.Mark

Why do they rank the home page?
We are trying to rank for the key word Motorcycle Parts.  We have moved up to page 2 over the past couple months; however, google is ranking our home page not our http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/s/49/61/Motorcycle-Parts page that is for motorcycle parts.  We are working on internal linking to help point the right signals too.  Any other thoughts?  ( we have new content written to put in as well we just have to wait for an issue to be fixed before we can put it in)

301 Redirect with ASP (not .NET)
I'm looking to redirect non www to www and also .co.uk to .com. http://www.xxxxx.com is the intended target. http://xxxxx.com & http://www.xxxxx.co.uk & http://xxxxx.co.uk to redirect. I managed to do some of this but if I come through to a service page /services/cars.asp it redirects to the homepage. All I have so far is this code: <% If InStr(Request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME"),"www") = 0 ThenResponse.write "http://www." & Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_HOST") & Request.ServerVariables("URL") & "?" & Request.ServerVariables("QUERY_STRING")Response.EndEnd if %> What am I missing?

301 redirect or 302
A client of mine has an international company named www.taxglobalizers.com if you come from Holland they 302 redirect you to the www.taxglobalizers.com/en version of the site and if you come from Holland they redirect with a 302 to www.taxglobalizers.com/nl version. I think it is best to change this in a 301 redirect. Am i correct in this? Kind Regards, Ruud

How do 301 redirects affect rankings?
Scenario: example.com/red-shoes gets 301 redirected to example.com/brown-boots because we have stopped selling red shoes and now only sell brown boots (which is a fairly new page with no authority). the red-shoes page ranked well for "red shoes" and "footwear". Will Google still index and show the red-shoes url in the SERPs? Will the "red shoes" and "footwear" keywords still rank well? Or does the redirected/new boots page need to properly support these keywords? The boots page has inherited the juice from the shoes page, but how does it help the boots page rank well? Only for keywords that both pages targeted, like a general "footwear" type keyword? Thanks in advance!
