Move blogspot blog Domain/Blog
-
We have had a blog up for over 2 years on brandname.blogspot.com. I want to get the SEO value out of the blog - we have 400 blog post. We don't get alot of visitors and the blogposts weren't even linked to the main site.
Should I just 301 redirect and move everything to domain/blog?
Is that the best way?
Thanks.

We have been blogging for over 2 years at free-online-converters.blogspot.com. I want to leverage the SEO value of the blog - we have 100 blog posts. We don't get a lot of visitors and the blog posts weren't even linked to the main site.
Should I just redirect 301 and move everything to the domain / blog?
Is this the best way?
Thank you.

If the blog posts have true value and if there has not been a big investment in offpage SEO, I would simply move them to the primary domain.
That will be a big increase in benefit over what you currently are getting.
If you can figure out a way to canonical or redirect that will be a huge bonus as long as you have not built spammy links.

Migrating a Blogspot site to a WordPress self-hosted one while retaining SEO value is a serious heap of work, Karen, and it's quite finicky. You'll really want to seriously consider (after doing some analysis of the existing blog's value) whether the time and effort is worth it if, as you say, you don't get many visitors (indicating the site doesn't have much ranking value in Google.)
Because, as Branagan points out, you can't simply add redirects to an .htaccess file (Blogspot doesn't give you access to one), you have to build a custom template for Blogspot site which matches up to your specially-configured new blog.
Here's by far the best tutorial on this process I've found. The author has also created a plugin to help with the process. It even includes a method for managing the download & re upload of the blog's images. It's been a couple years since I've done one, but it is doable if you have a lot of time and patience.
Really make sure the value of the old blog is worth it before you invest the time, but if you decide to go for it, good luck!

Basically, yes.
I'm not sure if you can use 301 redirects (best method) in Blogspot, if not you could set the new domain's URLs as canonical.
You could also use the "change of address" feature in Google's Webmaster Tools. although. again. I'm not sure if you can use it with Blogspot (not a big fan of the service as you can see
When you finish, check, re check, and keep an eye for those 404s!

Do I really need a "Blog"?
Hello Moz community, I have a question about creating content on a new website that we just launched. Do we really need an area called a "Blog"? It's a financial website and the network admins have some security concerns about placing a blogging application such as Wordpress on the server because of PCI regulations. Can an area such as one called "Resources" where you list articles or posts be just as effective as a "blog"?

Best Way to Manage Multiple Blogs
Good Morning... I have multiple blogs that all relate to the same industry and products... The blogs all have unique content, they do not have duplicate content... Is there a way to share the information or link from one to the other without being seen as someone trying to manipulate anything? The goal is to keep each blog updated frequently, but I can only write so much unique content... can i somehow share the content? Please provide any feedback or advice... Thanks

Typepad.com blog migration & duplicate content
I've migrated a typepad.com blog with a bunch of content (but little traffic) onto a hosted WordPress site under my own domain name (the way I should've done it in the first place). Now I don't want to confuse Google that the new site is duplicating content from the other site, so would I be better off with: 1) meta-refresh redirecting each typepad.com post to the same post on the new blog, or 2) just killing the typepad.com blog entirely so Google will not find duplicate posts anywhere. In favor of #2 is the fact that these posts get very little traffic today. I figure I will lose more traffic from duplicate content ranking penalties than from losing the posts themselves in the original blog. What do you think?

Blog on Sub-domain affect on SEO
Hi, Setting up a blog for a new website. What affects will hosting a blog on a sub-domain (blog.mysite.com vs. mysite.com/blog) have on SEO? Also, would having a separate blog domain be beneficial or detrimental (myblog.com)? Thanks, Shane
