Hi SEO PROS,
I have a website and I am planing to change all the urls. I need to know what is the right way of making the urls. Here is some information.
We are based in Brooklyn NY and we sell our services to Manhattan clients and Manhattan has few names. NY, NYC, Manhattan and NY. So by looking at my service area I came up with this url. http://www.signsny.com/brooklyn-ny/awnings this is my current url.
http://www.signsny.com/sign-types/awnings-canopies-brooklyn-NYC. This is what I am planning to change it to.
Please guide me to the right direction, so in future I don't have to re-do them again.
Thanks
Abie

Good Morning,
Is there any way I can check which internal url is getting juice from back links? Is there a way to find out?
Thanks

Good morning,
I am changing the url structure because current url brooklyn-ny/awnings is not in a sub folder. brooklyn-ny suppose to be a category. This is the reason why we are changing he url structure. Google recommend sub folder hierarchy. Am I correct?
Thanks

Hi Tahir,
I would recommend against making this change actually. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the URLs. I can see that you might be considering doing a restructure that makes the type of product more prominent than the location in the subfolder hierarchy, but it isn't advisable to "stuff" keywords into the rest of the URL, e.g. awnings-canopies-brooklyn-NYC.
The existing structure, from my point of view, looks more professional and should not hinder the site's rankings. What is the reason why you're wanting to make the change?
Cheers,
Jane

Hi,
When looking to create location-based URL's, it is important to create a structure that you can follow throughout the site. You don't want to create something now, that means you are limited if you wish to expand further down the line.
What you have come up with there is a good URL, but do remember to back this up with a logical page title (Awnings and Canopies in Brooklyn and NYC). You can further add to this by mentioning it int he Meta Description and in the page copy as well.

Here are the few tips that I would like to share with you here with regards to URL creation.
- Keep the URL short long URLs might create problems with regards to indexing.
- Try to make your URL simply and easy as a person can guess what he/she will find on the page.
- Do not use special characters as these are not SEO friendly URL structure.
- Try not to stuff keywords within your URLs
Just keep these few recommendations in mind when creating URLs for your website. I personally don’t see any problem with your current URL structure and creating new URLs and 3019ng old to the new one will lose some of your link juice that might affect your current rankings.
Hope this helps!

URL Parameters as pagination
Hi guys, due to some changes to our category pages our paginated urls will change so they will look like this: ...category/bagger/2?q=Bagger&startDate=26.06.2017&endDate=27.06.2017 You see they include a query parameter as well as a start and end date which will change daily. All URLs with pagination are on noindex/follow. I am worrying that the products which are linked from the category pages will not get crawled well when the URLs on which they are linked from change on a daily basis. Do you have some experience with this? Are there other things we need to worry about with these pagination URLs? cheers

Redirect URLS with 301 twice
Hello, I had asked my client to ask her web developer to move to a more simplified URL structure. There was a folder called "home" after the root which served no purpose. I asked for the URLs to be redirected using 301 to the new URLs which did not have this structure. However, the web developer didn't agree and decided to just rename the "home" folder "p". I don't know why he did this. We argued the case and he then created the URL structure we wanted. Initially he had 301 redirected the old URLS (the one with "Home") to his new version (the one with the "p"). When we asked for the more simplified URL after arguing, he just redirected all the "p" URLS to the PAGE NOT FOUND. However, remember, all the original URLs are now being redirected to the PAGE NOT FOUND as a result. The problems I see are these unless he redirects again: The new simplified URLS have to start from scratch to rank 2)We have duplicated content - two URLs with the same content Customers clicking products in the SERPs will currently find that they are being redirect to the 404 page. I understand that redirection has to occur but my questions are these: Is it ok to redirect twice with 301 - so old URL to the "p" version then to final simplified version. Will link juice be lost doing this twice? If he redirects from the original URLS to the final version missing out the "p" version, what should happen to the "p" version - they are currently indexed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Need very urgent advice on Wedsite Migration questions please.
Good afternoon, I am in the middle of re branding my Computer Repair Business that has been established for the past 5 years now and does very well in GOOGLE for all things computer repair search related queries. I have a done tons of research on the Migration process and all elements involved for the past month now and I have been doing SEO for the past 5 years and am quite knowledgeable and very fluent with search engine optimization. I have a bit of a unique situation going on in my particular instance. Not only am I re branding the business and trying to maintain my GOOGLE rankings trying to pull this off at the busiest time of the year (summer months) but I am also going to be physically relocating my business after the busy (Summer Season) from my current location of Wilmington, NC to Charlotte, NC. Yes, I do understand that Winter would have been the best (time) to do all of this massive changing around but, my hand is forced and this is being done out of necessity for monetary survival purposes and I really have no choice in the matter currently! With that said here is my dilemma. I am setting up a SILO Site Architecture using the "Thesis Framework" and WordPress which will be an improvement by 5 fold of what I have in my current well established JOOMLA site that has done very well in GOOGLE Search these past 5 years (all first page results) for anything (Computer Repair) related in Wilmington, NC. So, I am trying run damage control on this situation and I have a number of questions that need a strategic well thought out answer from a different perspective on this matter. 301 Redirect question: I want to include my geo targeted location in my URL String as it has served me well in the pass however, seeing how I am going to be Physically relocating myself and the business to Charlotte, NC from my current location of Wilmington, NC after the summer months what will I need to take into consideration with this situation in regards to the 301 redirect? _ "If I include my current location (Wilmington NC) in the destination (New Domain) URL string for any given 301 redirect from my existing website to the new website and then physically move to another city 3 months later is this setting myself up for a BIG Failure??"_ Seeing how I have no idea of how this technically works with GOOGLE as far as how long this (migration process) takes to Fully complete where the OLD domain completely drops off and everything is Fully passed over to the New Domain in terms leaving the 301 Re directs in place on the Old Domain Server. How long does this process usually take with GOOGLE? Information that you should know: This is my First Experience doing a Site Migration! The NEW DOMAIN is on a Different Server and IP I will be performing 301 Redirects on a Page to Page Basis! I DO plan on keeping the Old Domain Server Account online for 4 months after the migration process. Both OLD and NEW domains are on HOST GATOR (separate accounts) I am Migrating from JOOMLA to WordPress I am using the Thesis Framework for the new WordPress site (New Domain) I have created and established a well thought out SILO Site Architecture for the (NEW DOMAIN) using Parent and Child Pages in WordPress (not posts) supported by many hours of keyword research for my SILO Themes I am changing My Existing /computer-repair.hml URL Structure to WordPress **/computer-repair/ ** remember.. (using WP - Pages) not posts! I am re branding my Company business from Community Computer Repair to PC Medics On Call I am reducing my on page Content because it is too long in the Tooth for my customer base and although the search engines love it, in it's current state (long winded and well written) it is having a negative effect on the people that actually pay my bills (my customers) but my new Site Hierarchical Structure will rectify a lot of the negative fall out from this change that would otherwise kill me in the search rankings from doing this. In addition to being an proficient SEO I am also a developer and a coder. The New Domain is Currently ALLOWING only my IP Address while I sort this out and until I complete the new site structure and get the content and ON Page done. For the Destination Domain URL Structure, is including my current City (Wilmington NC) going to be an issue with the 301 Redirects seeing how I am moving to Charlotte NC around September? Having the Geo Targeted City in my URL Structure will help offset some of the damage caused by the changes that I need to make. Plus, the URL looks less spammy looking at the examples below when icluding location after the keyword phrase **Example -1 - ** VIRUS REMOVAL SILO With GEO Targeted Location after Keyword http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal-wilmington-nc/malware-removal/ Without - GEO Targeted Location after Keyword http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal/malware-removal ** Example -2 -** COMPUTER REPAIR SILO With GEO Targeted Location after Keyword http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/computer-repair-wilmington-nc/laptop-repair/ Without - GEO Targeted Location after Keyword http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/computer-repair/laptop-repair/ As far as the potential problems with icluding the Wilmington NC in the Targeted URL destination for the 301 Redirect and then changing my Actual City location for the business 2 1/2 - 3 months later is this going to be an issue? Pertaining to the 301 redirect question above, how exactly would I handle this if I used Wilmington, NC after the Keyword when I initiate the 301 Redirect to the site? Can I later change this in the OLD Domain .htaccess 3 months later to reflect the Charlotte Location and also do the necessary 301 Redirect in the NEW DOMAIN to reflect the permanent move? I hope I have not confused this any by the way that I am asking? Here is a screen shot of the NEW DOMAIN layout for the Links below and above. NOTE: Currently, ALL Silo Menu Themes have - wilmington-nc/ incorporated after the targeted Keyword http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal-wilmington-nc/malware-removal/ http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal/malware-removal SEOMOZ-PC-MEDICS-ON-CALL-1.jpg SEOMOZ-PC-MEDICS-ON-CALL1.jpg

Very, very confusing behaviour with 301s. Help needed!
Hi SEOMoz gang! Been a long timer reader and hangerouter here but now i need to pick your brains. I've been working on two websites in the last few days which are showing very strange behaviour with 301 redirects. Site A This site is an ecommerce stie stocking over 900 products and 000's of motor parts. The old site was turned off in Feb 2011 when we built them a new one. The old site had terrible problems with canonical URLs where every search could/would generate a unique ID e.g. domain.com/results.aspx?product=1234. When you have 000's of products and Google can find them it is a big problem. Or was. We launche the new site and 301'd all of the old results pages over to the new product pages and deleted the old results.aspx. The results.aspx page didn't index or get shown for months. Then about two months again we found some certain conditions which would mean we wouldn't get the right 301 working so had to put the results.aspx page back in place. If it found the product, it 301'd, if it didn't it redirected to the sitemap.aspx page. We found recently that some bizarre scenerio actually caused the results.aspx page to 200 rather than 301 or 404. Problem. We found this last week after our 404 count in GWMT went up to nearly 90k. This was still odd as the results.aspx format was of the OLD site rather than the new. The old URLs should have been forgetten about after several months but started appearing again! When we saw the 404 count get so high last week, we decided to take severe action and 301 everything which hit the results.aspx page to the home page. No problem we thought. When we got into the office on Monday, most of our product pages had been dropped from the top 20 placing they had (there were nearly 400 rankings lost) and on some phrases the old results.aspx pages started to show up in there place!! Can anyone think why old pages, some of which have been 301'd over to new pages for nearly 6 months would start to rank? Even when the page didn't exist for several months? Surely if they are 301's then after a while they should start to get lost in the index? Site B This site moved domain a few weeks ago. Traffic has been lost on some phrases but this was mainly due to old blog articles not being carried forward (what i'll call noisy traffic which was picked up by accident and had bad on page stats). No major loss in traffic on this one but again bizarre errors in GWMT. This time pages which haven't been in existence for several YEARS are showing up as 404s in GWMT. The only place they are still noted anywhere is in the redirect table on our old site. The new site went live and all of the pages which were in Googles index and in OpenSiteExplorer were handled in a new 301 table. The old 301s we thought we didn't need to worry about as they had been going from old page to new page for several years and we assumed the old page had delisted. We couldn't see it anywhere in any index. So... my question here is why would some old pages which have been 301'ing for years now show up as 404s on my new domain? I've been doing SEO on and off for seven years so think i know most things about how google works but this is baffling. It seems that two different sites have failed to prevent old pages from cropping up which were 301d for either months or years. Does anyone has any thoughts as to why this might the case. Thanks in advance. Andy Adido
