Are there any noob sites that might enlighten me to how everyone earns income here?
-
I know...very odd beginner question so let me elaborate. I have always worked in the corporate grind. I quit and opened up a couple of small (fairly unsuccessful) businesses since 2007. I enjoyed the SEO parts of building the business but just couldn't get them to stick. (local service businesses) I have fallen into some lead gen business with my old customers and I am trying to build that now.
How are the majority of the SEO people earning income here? Are most selling their SEO services to other small businesses? Are most earning ad type income here? (how does that work?) I am quickly being forced back into the corporate grind again and would really prefer to learn and taylor my SEO efforts into staying self employed if possible.
Would anyone be able to direct me to sites that might explain how entrepreneurs are earning income around here? A little 'Career Counseling' of sorts? (haha) I sincerely would appreciate some enlightenment.

I don't have clients. I work on my own websites. Some are retail monetized by sales, some are informational monetized by ads.
The best place to start with ads is Google Adsense. Their website has all of the information that you need and lots of sample websites to learn how itworks. To make money that way you need to produce content of high enough quality that it attracts an audience or attracts a lot of traffic from search and social.

Thank you...I am honestly not looking for specifics...just a general idea of what most people concentrate on. Ad revenue, how it works, how to get started etc.

Most SEOers are pretty protective of their incomes (having worked to get to where they are) but if you hand around here you get an idea, you can also try the seo (and bigseo) threads on http://www.reddit.com/ which can be helpful. You can also keep an eye on seo forums. Good luck on your hunt!

Do you think Content distribution might help for linkbuilding outreach ?
I'm building my netlinking strategy, and I know that creation great content on my website is the first step for good linkbuilding. However, as we know, a link does only worth if he can be viewed, shared, and ammended. I'm already including email outreach for my strategy, but I'm thinking of content distribution as a method to reach an even great audience, and to get some backlinks. To be clear, I'm not saying that my backlink strategy will be based on the links received through content distribution (which will be NOFOLLOW); but I think a large audience from the aggregate websites can see my content, and maybe link to it, so I can earn backlinks from the content I'm creating on my website. Based on your experience, what do you think?

Getting started with E-commerce sites
Happy new year, Mozzers We are about to take on our first E-commerce client which will be something new for us as we expand in 2014. Being a small outfit, we've never taken on a type of site like this before, which is great for new experiences and challenges. Do you have any advice, recommendations, suggestions, things to look out for etc, etc when working with E-commerce sites for the first time ever? thanks M

Why Did Our Site Disappear for 6 Months?
Hello! The company that I work for recently hired a company to do their SEO. After they took over we fell out of the search engines for our keywords for 6 months! (I had previously done the SEO using Moz, but had to step down due to my husband getting cancer. He's all better and I'm back. 🙂 ) We contacted the SEO company recently to find out why the only way we could be found in the search engines was if we searched on our name. The reason they gave was Penguin, Panda, and Hummingbird. I personally don't believe that would cause our site to disappear for 6 months then miraculously reappear for our keywords a few days after us complaining. One of my main concerns is they have submitted us to 140 directories and 20 social bookmarking sites. How do I tell if these are good or bad sites? A few of them I've clicked are suspended and one Google warns about malicious content and to leave immediately - so those are obvious. Thanks for your help! Kelley Insana

How does nudity on a site affect search results?
One of my clients sells lingerie and with it being lingerie there are a fair few photos of bottoms and some exposed breasts. Gosh. Anyway I know how this affects Adwords campaigns - Google classifies the site as 'adult' and your ads don't show anywhere. I also know how it affects image searches. However how does it affect text seaches?? Are rankings demoted because of nudity? I've worked with a clothing site with some nudity on it before and this didn't affect it, but would love to hear from anyone with specific experience of thisThanks

Are Wordpress sites being dinged by Google? Read a few articles regarding.
I read a couple "SEO" related articles that sites built in Wordpress are going to be dinged by Google because Google sees Wordpress sites as simple to make and a higher potential to be "spammy". Is there any truth to this? Your thoughts? I do give "thumbs up" and "best answer" marks and appreciate receiving thumbs up myself... Thanks

Rebranding Sites
Our company just went through a rebranding and this includes the web sites. We have a new website (same domain) hosted on a new sever. We implemented 301's for outdated domain names and urls. The content has been overhauled to be simpler and we are building this from ground up with SEO in mind.I have canonical tags, being mindful of follow and no follow, with out trying to page sculpt) and ensuring the urls are descriptive and free of auto generated cms trash. To prepare for the launch, I captured all the analytics and adword campaigns before the switch. and began making lists of where we need to change the name around the web. We were performing pretty well, on SERPS before hand and now we want to try to keep the momentum speeding up with a cleaner newer site. Does anyone have any more suggestions on what more I should be doing to start off on the right foot.
