Best Practices-Optimize Theme Before Coding or After Coding?
-
We purchased a Wordpress Real estate theme called wpcasa. My developer started coding it. We hired a new SEO. The SEO looked at a simple page (About Us) and saw about 70 Java scripts and 11 templates and was very dissatisfied with the coding and heavy source code contained in the theme. My SEO claims the optimizing this theme (removing the unnecessary Java Scripts and combining the templates is way too much work and that it would be better to start from scratch and purchase a theme like https://my.studiopress.com/themes/agentpress/ with more compact, efficient and streamlined code. Problem is we need to throw out 2 months and thousands of dollars worth of code. My SEO says that in the day of Google's "mobile first" streamlined code is particularly important. My developer has taken the position that the code can be cleaned up after the design. Where it seems my SEO wants clean code to stat with. I don't know who to is right. Any ideas? Am I better of starting from scratch with a new more efficient theme, or cleaning up the code on the wpcasa theme?
The code for the test page is below. Thanks!

The great thing about Themes is pretty much over 90 something percent of them are under 100 bucks. In all honesty, there's like maybe a handful that is just simply amazing! I personally love Divi. I've tried many themes, the only one I really need outside of Divi is my retro tube for an adult niche.
The problem with a platform like WordPress is that there are a LOT of themes. Which means naturally a LOT of themes will most likely SUCK. If it becomes even slightly a hassle, in the beginning, I would get out dodge and get a better one quick.
Take it from me and my poor experiences trying desperately to make my theme not suck for the first website I ever made. I did eventually but thinking back on it, that was such a torturously miserable painful process. A few traits of themes to avoid:
- Top heavy visual builders
- Ridiculously large amounts of mandatory plugins. (install as few as possible is a great practice to follow) Some sites I have like literally just use Yoast and do quite well.
- Not having some form of responsiveness. With so many optional frameworks easily attached, there is no excuse.
431 premade page layouts, Email popup software Bloom/social share software called Monarch. I would go with either Either that one or just ridiculously godly fast like Generate Press which utilizes varnish.
And in reference to optimizing before or after the process of configuring a theme for your site, it's actually both. Any well optimized site, will involve modifying content frequently and I would definitely suggest optimizing everything you have right away or as quickly as possible

SEO Ranking: Can Child Theme Compete with Custom Theme?
Ranking for New York City commercial real estate is extremely competitive. We compete against: www.squarefoot.com, www.42floors.com, www.Loopnet.com, www.wework.com and a dozen other optimized sites. Our site was designed in 2012. We plan on upgrading it. From an SEO perspective, can we compete by purchasing a Wordpress real estate theme and customizing it into a child theme? Our better ranking competitors are using custom themes where the code has been very streamlined to make the sites quick and easy to index by spiders. Would we gain a significant edge by custom coding? This is somewhat technical for a business owner and I am trying to get my head around it. Our existing site is www.nyc-officespace-leader.com. Some of the themes we are considering are: -http://main.wpestatetheme.org/homepage -http://houzez01.favethemes.com/ -http://realhomes.inspirythemes.biz/property/ From an SEO perspective is creating a child theme from the above a good approach? Or will a custom theme give us an advantage. If there is an advantage is that edge so marginal that it is not significant? In terms of coding, is a custom site much more labor, 2x, 3x the time to code? Also is the maintenance of a custom site much more involved? Also, as a related question, my developer since 2012 has created many custom plugins for Wordpress. Is this a no, no? Will avoiding custom plugins add to the development cost? Even if we use a child theme from an existing real estate website, I would hope that the improved user interface will provide a boast in at least conversions if not SEO. Thanks, Alan

Mergers & Acquisitions - Website Transition Good practice
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has come across good practice for maintaining websites after a merger or acquisition where there needs to be an association between two websites of the two companies involved. For an acquisition, I'm considering moving the acquired company to a sub domain of the parent company e.g. aquiredcompany.parentcompany.com. On both websites there wmay be a prominant popup so visitors can switch between the websites if they have visited the incorrect one. One worry I have is the acquired company has some good rankings, which I want to keep. I will of course manage the process through 301 redirects. But I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this approach or can suggest any better solutions. Thanks in advance, Stuart

Best practice for product detail when all products are onepage
HI there,
Web Design | | Hephey
I have a page utilizing isotope with multiple products with small text excerpts and when you click an item i opens a detailed view without requiring a new page load. I've read some of the one page posts but can't get my head around what's best SEO wise when dealing with possible duplicate content. I guess one method could be to have the product list with small excerts of text and all the details hidden in some json and then when the user clicks it, it will open the product and fill with details from inline json. The click action is overring the a tag action e.g. with jquery, so the the a tag has a clean url to a proper subpage with meta, h1 and all that stuff so google can follow it. The jquery thing enables the navigation without a page reload and I can update the document url with pushState.
The subpage, if visited directly, includes the same animation stuff as the master but now has h1, p meta specific to that product but still with same effect, navigation and layout as the master page. Does anybody know if there is a better way to do this with one page sites when wanting to seo optimize detailed contents?0 -
Best strategy for multiple internal links
We have a website that has a whole heap of internal links. After re-structuring the footer links to the main categories we are now looking at the best way to display the internal links from each category (approx 20-50 links from each). At present they are simply listed on the corresponding category page, however this doesnt look great so we want to display them in a way that is user friendly and also seo friendly. Any suggestions and examples appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Best Webhosting Suggestions??
Good morning my fellow Mozzers! I am currently looking at adding some diversity to my current web hosting and I was hoping I could get some suggestions. I dont currently need a VPS or Dedicated Server, I just need some shared hosting, you know, packeges that are sub $20 a month...i mean i will pay more than that, but so far everything i look at that meets my needs(basic hosting, email, ect...). This is for client sites and they are growing in number somewhat rapidly. I currently host with GoDaddy and they are amazing in the support department, but I do question whether their servers are causing slow page loads ect...but all in all I am happy with them. I have used Netword Solutions in the past, but left them because i was not a big fan of talking to support people in india and malasia. I do think that their servers might have performed better than GoDaddy so i am not ruling them out at this point i am looking for a provider that has excellent support and who has servers that are not so overloaded the can render pages and content slowly. Performance is very important to me. I am not looking for the cheapest, I am looking for the overall best. Thanks in advance SEOmoz family!!!

Page Title Optimization
I am reviewing the optimization on my site and it appears that my page titles follow this method: PAGE_NAME | KEYWORD in CITY ST - COMPANY_NAME I am pretty well optimized for "KEYWORD in CITY ST" but am wondering if I should drop it from all page titles except for the pages that actually deal with that keyword. What are your thoughts on optimizing?

Any advice for best practice for mobile versions of websites?
Hi Mozzers, I am looking to develop a mobile version of one of my sites and was wondering what was considered best practice for the following: Where to host it: m.domain.com or domain.com/mobile ? Is rel='canonical' enough to avoid mobile version being indexed or should I use "noindex" on mobile version? How to handle tablets? Which screen size sees mobile version? Which sees full site version? Thanks in advance Geoff
