Amp plugins + Wordpress = speed, rankings, results
-
Hello beloved,
Been some time since I have been on, planning to return and help out and be bit more active.
Need some latest thoughts and input, on amp plugins for Wordpress, and their results and effect on rankings?
Thank you all in advance

Never found any plugin that does critical CSS and critical JS properly for all variants of a site's responsive design. Maybe a lot of things do get covered by some plugins, but it ends up looking glitchy with bits of the page jumping around on-load (which is technically a failed critical rendering path optimisation implementation!)
There are loads of good plugins that help with the caching, minification, compression and deferring of resources (Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, Autoptimize etc) but still for the critical rendering path optimisation elements - nothing that I would call 'solid' or 'good'
Still I haven't personally built a WP site in a year or two now. Maybe you could point me to a plugin that actually correctly generates critical CSS and critical JS in a dynamic way where it's altered depending upon the user's device (mobile vs desktop etc)
As for AMP, never had much luck with it myself. Like Joe said I don't think it's really very worth it

Effectdigital,
Critical Path optimization is just one part of a bigger amp pie including:
- Allow only asynchronous scripts
- Size all resources statically
- Don't let extension mechanisms block rendering
- Keep all third-party JavaScript out of the critical path
- All CSS must be inline and size-bound
- Font triggering must be efficient
- Minimize style recalculations
- Only run GPU-accelerated animations
- Prioritize resource loading
- And More
So amp process covers a lot, and agreed top devs is ideal, but in WordPress world there are plugins that successfully cover 90% of what a solid dev would do in a custom project, and for many cases a plugin is more then enough so looking for more input, of any that had success. Again thank you for the current response this is helpful.

Thanks Joe,
Anyone have experience for extended length blog articles that took advantage of amp functionality? And saw rank boost? This is the info I am looking for.
Thanks all

I second this but also add that optimising your critical rendering path (which to be done properly CAN NOT BE HANDED to junior developers, senior only!!!) can have some incredible results:
https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/performance/critical-rendering-path/analyzing-crp
https://kinsta.com/blog/critical-rendering-path/
It's extremely difficult and involves inlining some CSS / JS, putting the rest in another file and deferring that file (as well as a few other bits and pieces). The trick is getting the CSS / JS inline / external groupings set up correctly as otherwise, the site loads up a bit glitchy
This is extremely advanced, tiresome and not for the faint of heart. Only champions of dev need apply

This was tried at my Agency a few months ago, it was a waste of time, in my opinion, unless you're running a News service.
I'd focus on optimising your site & upgrade your hosting solution.

Are wordpress themes like from themeforest bad?
Hi to all. Ok so as I read around the internet I see a lot of people who dislike theme forest and using their themes. I have a them from them, the Avada theme. Ok so they have made a TON of money. But would so many people buy the theme if it was that bad? Going forward, my question is, are wordpress themes a bad thing to do? I feel like its peer pressure to switch to a framework like Genesis. There are so many people who state that a framework and child theme is the way to go. But I am using this avada theme and having under 2.5 sec load times. A lot of people say the code is bloated and is horrible. I understand this and got a cache plugin that makes a huge difference. But I do want to learn and I do want to approach websites in a positive way. So if you have any thoughts on themes, please tell me your thoughts. I am no developer, so they seem to work, but is it at a price? Like bad seo and serps? Thank you chris

Affected by the Penguin 2.0...Lost Rankings!! Which one from the following causes did that?
Hi Moz Community, we lost our rankings for almost all of our keywords due to penguin 2.0 I'm trying to rectify the situation by getting our rankings back and better. Here are the potential causes for our rankings drop. 1. My Company has the exact same site (in English) on different country-specific domains. companyname.com, companyname.ch, companyname.ca, companyname.nl etc.. We are using link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://companyname.com" **Would this solve the duplicate content issue? ** 2. All the international domains have footer links in the homepages, pointing to our main .com site. Google webmaster tools shows that every page on these international domains as a backlink source. Would that be a problem? Should I ask our web designers to remove those footer links from the international domains? 3. In the past, our company had a partnership with forum...Like the forum promotes our company's services. I don't know how did that forum promoted our site, But Google webmaster tools shows that we have some 25K backlinks from that forum!!! But when I try to visit those backlinks, none of those pages have any links to our site....Could they be hidden? Or Some thing wrong with GWT? I'd appreciate your valuable suggestions to help us understand the situation better... Thank you.

Getting a highly ranked site a better result for 1 search term
I have a highly ranked website for a niche category. My site ranks higher in SEOMOZ than all of my competitors, but I can't get any higher than 4th on a page for one specific search term. What can I do to help my site increase its ranking on a specific search term?

Image sliders & site speed
We are having a new website designed using WordPress and the Genesis framework. We wanted to include header image sliders on a number of internal site pages, but our designer says that sliders on more than just the home page will slow down the site significantly. How much could they slow down the site, and what can be done to minimize their effect on site speed?

What have your experiences with rankings after a redesign?
Hi, I am looking to get a site of mine a much needed redesign and was wondering what other peoples experiences have been with rankings in Google after the new site has gone live. It will be converted from html/css design to a PHP based CMS with added functionality such as filtering, sorting etc. I'm aware of some of the preventative measures that can be done to prevent loss of rankings (e.g. 301 redirects) but are there any others and in your experiences have they been successful preventing the site dropping out of favor or losing rankings? Kind regards Rosh
