Using Anchor Link in the Main Navigation
-
Has anyone ever used anchor links as a drop-down in a sub-collection from the main navigation and does it have any negative impact on link equity?
My client has large product collections and sub-collections, these are then separated into further subsections which are open within the same page (see attached). What I want to do ideally is in the main navigation feature 'Mad Hatter Costumes and Accessories'. This will obviously have a # in the URL though and I am was wondering if this might hurt the chance of the page ranking?
If anyone has any experience in this it would be really helpful!!
Thanks in advance

Not a problem

Agree with you on entirely on optimising for the conversion, which is why I was looking at this solution in the first place. It's a case of balancing between the UX and the ranking I suppose!
Thanks for your thoughts and help.

depends how many of these you're planning to have. In any case, the loss (which may occur) should be very fractional and not super damaging. If you lose 0.05% traffic but gain +2% conversion rate, then really you're winning overall. Sometimes good SEO involves making a decision that slightly hurts the 'purist' SEO, in order to focus on revenue and 'real business' KPIs (which matter more, which bosses care about more)
As long as you can reason the trade-off which you made and it falls in your favour (overall), then you have done a good job
Your bigger problem is that these new links may push other links further out of the user's reach and / or further down the code / page. If this happens, other links may not supply quite the same SEO authority which they did before
I certainly think your proposal is worth testing. Measure both the CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) and SEO impacts. If overall you take in more $, then the fact that SEO has a slightly bruised cheek is really just a matter of vanity. Think with your business head

Thanks for your response!
Do you think you would lose the equity from the link being in the main navigation though? In theory, it would still point at www.domain/subcollection but it would then also have a hashtag at the end of the URL as well and I don't know if that would impact my subcollection from ranking?

AFAIK this has no negative impact on SEO, but is symptomatic of another issue which does impact SEO. Putting too much stuff, or too much content on a single URL - thus 'diffusing' Google's ability to nail down 'the primary topic' of the URL (which can make it rank badly)
It's not the anchor links that cause the poor rankings though, it's the ill-thought out information architecture and site design (IMO)
Google won't rank those anchor URLs by the way. Just the main page. But it's not like you'll get some kind of crazy anchor using penalty or something, that doesn't exist

Adwords landing pages with no site links
Adwords best practices say to focus landing pages on conversions, with no navigational links to the rest of your website so they don't get distracted. However, now that Google Ads in the SERPs look so similar to organic results, visitors may click the ads instead of the organic result because that's what they see first. What is the risk of turning off these visitors who come to a landing page with a form, instead of a way to navigate through the rest of your site? Discussion question: Trade-offs between a form-focused landing page and providing navigation to the rest of the site?

Has anyone ever used Adwords' Forwarding Numbers as a Call Tracking Service?
Hi, I was taking over a client's Adwords account from a previous agency. It appears the former agency added the Google Forwarding Number (for call tracking on call extensions) and added it to the client's website. Therefore, if anyone calls that number from the website, it would register within Adwords (just not as a conversion but as a click under "call extensions") The problem: you can't filter by phone number (the same number calling +1 would indicate spam) you can filter by device (so tablet / computer) can be considered spam generally. Questions: Anyone ever used this before? Your thoughts? Does anyone know if there is spam coming from mobile devices now-a-days? Please tell me what I'm missing. Any advice / anyone else seen this / done this? Thanks Moz Community, Cole

Should I use always the highest bid?
In google adwords the highest bid apparently gets more impressions, but always more clicks? I wonder if I can save money by not targeting the 1st position, but from example 3-6, the ad will still be visible once the search results come in. how do you guys usually set the bid?

How to use a large budget
Hi All, This is more of an open discussion to gather some advice /  strategy tips for a large spending client - so looking for some experts tips here. Potentially, there is a large client on the horizon, with a budget for 'SEO'  starting at the 15k PM region. My question is- in what way would you personally begin to utilise this budget in absolute benefit of the client. What would you propose strategy-wise to begin with, what else would you incorporate along the line? How would you generate results not just from SEO, but from additional channels? PS - They have a separate budget for PPC. An open discussion and plenty of ideas would be fantastic.

How highly do you value a link from the BBB?
What I would like to know is how valued a link from the BBB is. I've searched various forums and websites to try and put a value on it, but I can't find a whole lot of useful discussion on it and how it can affect rankings. My ecommerce company has been approached by the BBB for Accreditation, which is something I've always been somewhat interested in. I realize many business owners either love/hate the BBB, but so far I have had several claims with them and they've always sided with my company, despite not being accredited. The BBB rep immediately started spouting off the benefits of having the BBB link to you, and I could see that as being true. They have a DA of 96, and obviously not everyone can get a link on that website (money and good reputation required). However, he probably exaggerated when he said often times businesses skyrocket in the rankings because of this backlink; he also seemed to think having the BBB code and badge that link to the BBB website seemed to affect rankings, which I don't think is correct. I also think that having their badge on our website could increase sales conversion (and maybe even increase the number of people that complain to the BBB). I'm not too worried about the complaints since we don't have ethics problems. The accreditation is $750 (seems high) and I'm not sure if it's really worth that amount, but I could be wrong. Would love some professional insight on if the BBB is worthwhile link or if it's overhyped and the money would be better spent elsewhere. At face value, it certainly seems like a good investment and I'd love to hear some insight as to how much value their backlink truly has to a company or if that money is better spent elsewhere.

Adblock Plus blocking Sponsored Link listings?
Been wondering for a while why sponsored links were not showing on my firefox browser, I had previously been running Adblock as an addon to stop ads on youtube, etc. As a test I disabled it and like magic adword links are showing again. Assuming programmes like this will get larger, and seemingly include adwords in the ad's it targets, would that be the end of effective PPC advertising? I have run other ad-blockers before and not lost the paid links. It's not an unpopular program, and the target audience reduces everytime somebody new installs it. Mountain out of a molehill or a genuine future problem?
