Using WebP Image Alongside Existing Images
-
Is it worthwhile to add in WebP images alongside existing images?
WebP Images can be three times smaller than PNGs and 25% smaller than JPGs, according to a plugin option I am looking at.
The alternative WebP images are provided via CDN.
Does anyone have any experience with this, and is it worth doing?

Thanks for your help will do as you suggest.

If other images are not via CDN, then you can probably also deploy WebP images without the CDN. I would convert your on-site images to WebP and recode your site / theme to serve your WebP images instead, and then code in some fall-backs for browsers which still don't support WebP. What I'm not seeing, is why a CDN is fundamentally required. Adding more unnecessary calls and connections to your pages can slow it down. For large sites with huge traffic-loads, CDNs are perfectly appropriate. With some smaller sites, I have seen CDNs implemented which actually make the pages take longer to load (a CDN isn't always needed). Myself I'd experiment on a couple of pages, replacing all their embedded images with WebP versions and see what difference it makes. If it met with success, I'd then roll the change out across the site (with in-code fall-backs for older or disruptive browsers). But I don't think I'd adopt a CDN at the same time I was trialing WebP, I'd keep it separate (for now). Then I'd try a CDN after and see if that resulted in further uplift or not!

Thanks effectdigital,
Other site images are not via CDN.
Its an option provided by a plugin we use Shortpixel.
I believe the WebP images would be supplied via their CDN.
But perhaps this does just complicate things, I guess I could always try it and test via Pingdom although it does mean recompensing all existing images.

Yeah I'd say it is worthwhile. WebP images can look great at a fraction of the file-size of the equivalent PNG / JPG / JPEG files
I don't know about having a CDN specifically to supply WebP images. Are your normal images (currently) supplied via a CDN? If they are not, why would you complicate things? You can serve the WebP images from your own site with fall-backs to PNG / JPG images as required
If your current images are served via CDN, then maybe serving the WebP images via CDN is a good idea. Just try not to change too many things at once, always take the simplest and most elegant solution

When rel canonical tag used, which page does Google considers for ranking and indexing? A/B test scenario!
Hi Moz community, We have redesigned our website and launched for A/B testing using canonical tags from old website to new website pages, so there will be no duplicate content issues and new website will be shown to the half of the website visitors successfully to calculate the metrics. However I wonder how actually Google considers it? Which pages Google will crawl and index to consider for ranking? Please share your views on this for better optimisation. Thanks

Existing URL structure and how to handle new pages before migration
Hi there! Currently, our site uses underscores "_" within the url structure. We are moving to Wordpress soon (the site is currently static html) but it will be a couple of months before the migration. Here is an example of the current structure: www.oldsitestructure.com/about_us/success_stories/custom_vinyl_banners When we do change, our url structure will have hyphen's "-" to separate terms, so the preferred new structure will be: www.oldsitestructure.com/about-us/success-stories/custom-vinyl-banners The entire site (with the exception of our Wordpress blog) currently uses the old structure. We have about 10 - 15 pages we will add before our migration, my question is: Should we use the preferred url structure starting NOW or stick with the old one? And set up 301 redirects are part of the migration process? Many thanks!

Should I Use An Animated Javascript Responsive Site
Hi, hope someone might be able to help me with this. I am setting my son up with a website for his small painting and decorating company. However, I am a wordpress stalwart and he has seen a theme which is a javascript animated responsive theme from template monster. Its not my choice just he is adamant that he wants it. However, I am slightly concerned that Google cannot index as well with these kind of sites as they would with a standard HTML site. I would be grateful if someone could confirm if they can be indexed etc. The content appears in what I can only describe as lightboxes. Thanks

Is anyone using Humans.txt in your websites? What do you think?
http://humanstxt.org Anyone using this on their websites and if so have you seen and positive benefits of doing so? Would be good to see some examples of sites using it and potentially how you're using the files. I'm considering adding this to my checklist for launching sites

What Shooping Cart To Use?
Hi Any recommendations on shopping carts? I’m looking for something pretty cheap, not over $150 a month. But I don't want to sacrifice quality to save on loose change. Any suggestions?

Moving Existing Website to CMS
I had zero experience with design, seo, etc..prior to joining seomoz last year, but have been tweaking my site to get better ranking and leads. I'm at the point now where I have to move my existing 8 year old static html website (lifeinsuranceadvisors.com) to a CMS system but am concerned about the impact this will have on my rankings, and money I currently make from my site selling the leads i generate. I generate leads for life insurance industry, have 150+/- existing pages, and it takes me forever to add new pages, make changes, not to mention the look is worn. What is the best way to make this move? Secondly, what SEO friendly CMS systems do you recommend? Thanks Mike Horbal Thank you all for the quick response and great info...I'm going to put my wishlist together before i make a move..thanks again.

Correct use for Robots.txt
I'm in the process of building a website and am experimenting with some new pages. I don't want search engines to begin crawling the site yet. I would like to add the Robot.txt on my pages that I don't want them to crawl. If I do this, can I remove it later and get them to crawl those pages?
