Using one domain for email and another domain for your website, but redirects...
-
We are rebranding and our new name is fairly lengthy. We own all main domain versions of our brand name - .com, .new and .org - There is a very high search volume for the new brand name as it is a merger of 2 popular existing brands so want to take advantage of that and use our full name within our website domain name.
However, since the name is a little long as mentioned - 25 characters - we also own the 3 character acronym of the new brand so we are debating on using the acronym for our new email addresses. ie name@abc.com so it is user friendly.
We would obviously redirect the acronym email domain to point to the longer website domain.
Are there any negative SEO effects if we do that? Use the longer domain for the website and shorter acronym for our email?
Thank you

From a purely SEO perspective, I don't think there will be any negative impact from using the acronym URL for your email addresses and the longer URL for your domain — the only concern I might have would be that people might try to link to the acronym domain after seeing your email, and those links would be passing through the redirect, but that would probably be an edge case.
I do think that 25 characters is a very lonnnngg domain name. If it's your brand, you're likely to rank #1 for it without having the exact new brand as the domain name, so you'll be capturing that high search volume anyway. You also have to think about this as a long-term play: there's a lot of search interest for the two brand names together now, because of the merger, but that's not the best reason to select a new brand name or a new domain name, both of which are things you'd want to persist for as long as possible, well after the merger is old news.
I know it might be too late for this, but I'd echo GrouchyKids' recommendation that you rethink how you want to brand the merger of these two brands. High search volume for one term isn't a great reason. If you do decide that you still want that to be your new brand name, you might still want to explore shorter versions of the new brand for your domain name. A 25-character URL is going to lose out on some direct traffic, as it will be difficult for repeat customers to remember and type in exactly (something your company must already be aware of, since they're looking for solutions not to have to type out the whole thing themselves every time they send an email!). Good luck with the rebrand in either case!

I think the use of a long domain name as you have suggested and an acronym is not the most sensible decision from a branding perspective. Acronyms seem to only work in very specific instances if you stop to think about it.Branding is an incredibly complex area, I would suggest that you really look into this. I would recommend books like Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind By Al Ries and Jack TroutI also think that as you presumably own the websites owned by both brands that you could do something that would work by redirecting them to a new site with a wholly different (Awesome) name that works for the user.Hope that helps.

Add a Search box (content hub) for my website?
Hello We would like to introduce a search area in our website, to help our users to find all information regarding a specific topic (landing pages, infographics, blogs, videos, etc...). Before we decide to build everything internally, we were wondering if there is any widget or plugging to make this in a smooth way and that works fine. I have also seen that Google offers a custom search option to make this happens. I would really appreciate advice about what to do regarding this topic: Is there any company that offers a really good solution for this? Is worth to use Google custom search option? Or the best option is build it internally? PS: I have seen that there are many plugins for wordpress, but our site is not a wordpress blog. Just to clarify. Many thanks for your help 🙂

Breaking a Big Website into Multiple Unrelated Sites
I have a big cluttered website that I want to simplify. There is content for patients, researchers, therapists who are looking for grants, etc.. Would it be a bad ideas to turn these into 3 or more, completely different sites with each focused on their specific demographic? Or should I just figure out how to organize the one site better? Thanks for your help!!!

Using images from Wikipedia, The right way to give credit for them?
Hi, I am writing my first blog post and I have downloaded 9 images from Wikipedia, After reading the confusing legal stuff, I am under the impression that all those images are allowed to be used for other purposes with citing/ giving credit to the owner. At least the ones I download the author said its ok to use them anywhere, for anything So how do i do that? Should I have something like this: Image, underneath-- image credit to xyz (link to Wikipedia page where i downloaded the image) ??? Thanks for you time and explanation.

Duplicates from weird domains
My sit is http://www.webdesign.org/, but the other day I found these sites that have duplicates of my original site: <a>http://wordpresswww.webdesign.org/</a><a>http://fdsfsdswww.webdesign.org/</a><a>http://gfdgdfgdfgwordpresswww.webdesign.org/</a><a>http://w54354353w.webdesign.org/</a>http://wojhkhjkhw.webdesign.org/What really freaks me out is that the content on those sites is 100% up to date. Same as on http://www.webdesign.org/. Now here's my question. 1. Since my site http://www.webdesign.org/ is the root domain, I take it that I can somehow disable those sites (subdomains) from my domain 'admin panel' or what not?2. If you can use those subdomains even if you don't own the root domain (http://www.webdesign.org/), it looks that some negative SEO has been done to my site?Which of my assumptions are right? Please help me to figure that out.

Driving Website Traffic
How much does organic traffic make up of your overall traffic? I have typically been driving my traffic through social channels and trying to get a feeling for how much of my traffic I should expect through SEO over time. For my blog www.shoottokyo.com I promote it through Google+, Facebook, and Tweeter. I also 'distribute' it through Feedburner, Google Currents, Feedly and a Newsletter. There isn't one way to promote but rather target actions through multiple channels. Google+: 1,500,000+ have me in circles Facebook: 3,000+ friends, fans and followers Twitter: 2,700+ followers Feedburner: 2,300+ subscribers Google Currents: 36,000+ subscribers Feedly: 1,000+ subscribers My newsletter: 2,900 subscribers Each of these are good sources of traffic. Are there others you would recommend considering? How much guest posting do you typically do?

How can I use my unique content to my advantage?
Hi, I run http://ablemagazine.co.uk - we also put out a print magazine every 2 months (the biggest disability magazine in Britain) This means we have loads of unique content (around 30 feature stories and 30 news stories every 2 months) Just wondering how I can use this to my advantage? I've been social bookmarking the feature stories (reddit, etc) and a link to all my unique stuff on facebook/twitter. Just wondering if there's anything else I should be doing? Thanks
