Solved How to solve orphan pages on a job board
-
Working on a website that has a job board, and over 4000 active job ads. All of these ads are listed on a single "job board" page, and don’t obviously all load at the same time.
They are not linked to from anywhere else, so all tools are listing all of these job ad pages as orphans.
How much of a red flag are these orphan pages? Do sites like Indeed have this same issue? Their job ads are completely dynamic, how are these pages then indexed?
We use Google’s Search API to handle any expired jobs, so they are not the issue. It’s the active, but orphaned pages we are looking to solve. The site is hosted on WordPress.
What is the best way to solve this issue? Just create a job category page and link to each individual job ad from there? Any simpler and perhaps more obvious solutions? What does the website structure need to be like for the problem to be solved? Would appreciate any advice you can share!

@cyrus-shepard-0 Thanks so much for your input! The categorization option was what we were thinking about as well, but not sure if the client will be ready to invest the time. Will definitely suggest it to them.
Not majorly concerned about the jobs being found via Google search as individual posts, it's more about avoiding the orphans, as I'm sure they will be seen as a red flag.
Also, yes, the job posts are covered in a sitemap, you are correct.

@michael_m Seems like you have a number of options.
Can you categorize the jobs into more specific types (e.g. region, job type, etc.) and then add them to more category-specific "job board" pages? Even if you had duplication across job boards, seems like you'd get better crawl + indexation coverage. Anything to create a more clear crawling path to those pages. Even 20-50 job categories (or other sort/filter features) might provide benefit, and those category pages probably have a better chance of ranking on their own.
Cross-linking from similar/related jobs might also be a good option to explore. Much how we link to related questions here in the Q&A.
Orphaned pages aren't always a problem, as long as the pages are getting indexed and ranked. I imagine the search volume is pretty low for some of those jobs, but Google's sitemap indexation report is going to be your friend here.
Hope that helps!
Are the job postings covered in a sitemap? As SEO tools are finding them as orphaned, I assume they are discovering the pages via sitemaps.

Redirecting Homepage to Subdomain Bad or Good Idea??
I have a very old forum that still gets a lot of traffic, but when migrating over to another software that is cloud based we cannot redirect using same domain, SO the only option would to be to change the cname on a subdomain and then REDIRECT all the traffic from the ROOT domain permanently - would this be a bad move as the root domain wouldnt be used anymore as now its just setup to be redirected in order to use the software we need to use? Domain is 17 years old.

Unsolved Orphaned unwanted urls from the cms
Hi
Technical SEO | | MattHopkins
I am working on quite an old cms, and there are bunch of urls that don't make any sense.
https://www.trentfurniture.co.uk/products/all-outdoor-furniture/all-outdoor-furniture/1
https://www.trentfurniture.co.uk/products/all-chairs/all-chairs/1
https://www.trentfurniture.co.uk/products/all-industries/all-chairs/1
https://www.trentfurniture.co.uk/products/all-chairs/all-industries/1
https://www.trentfurniture.co.uk/products/all-chairs/banqueting-furniture/1
https://www.trentfurniture.co.uk/products/all-chairs/bar-furniture/1
https://www.trentfurniture.co.uk/products/all-chairs/bentwood-furniture/1
For example there are no internal links. And fortunately not much traffic at all. But I can't see in the cms why they are generating? I've tried to check the html code to check why, what's the reason? But all I can think of is the structure....? something odd the cms writes?
Anyone have any ideas please? And would I redirect all these? Just thinking there could be a better solution/fix, rather than redirects since there are no links or traffic.....Like the devs solve why they are generating.....Unfortunately I get very slow responses from the devs as a 3rd pty company, hence on here ;0). (Some of those are indexed too)... :0) Thanks in advance....0 -

Unsolved Have we been penalised?
Hey Community, We need help! Have we been penalised, or is there some technical SEO issue that is stopping our service pages from being properly read? Website: www.digitalnext.com.au In July 2021, we suffered a huge drop in coverage for both short and longtail keywords. We thought that this could have been because of the link spam, core web vitals or core update around that time period. SEMRush: https://gyazo.com/d85bd2541abd7c5ed2e33edecc62854c

GSC: https://gyazo.com/c1d689aff3506d5d4194848e625af6ec There is no manual action within GSC and we have historically ranked page 1 for super competitive keywords. After waiting some time thinking it was an error, we have then have taken the following actions: Launched new website. Rewrote all page content (except blog posts). Ensured each page passes core web vitals. Submitted a backlink detox. Removed a website that was spoofing our old one. Introduced strong pillar and cluster internal link structure. After 3 months of the new website, none of our core terms has come back and we are struggling for visibility. We still rank for some super long-tail keywords but this is the lowest amount of visibility we have had in over 5 years. Every time we launch a blog post it does rank for competitive keywords, yet the old keywords are still completely missing. It almost feels like any URLs that used to rank for core terms are being penalised. So, I am wondering whether this is a penalisation (and what algorithm), or, there is something wrong with the structure of our service pages for them to not rank. Look forward to hearing from you

800,000 pages blocked by robots...
We made some mods to our robots.txt file. Added in many php and html pages that should not have been indexed. Well, not sure what happened or if there was some type of dynamic conflict with our CMS and one of these pages, but in a few weeks we checked webmaster tools and to our great surprise and dismay, the number of blocked pages we had by robots.txt was up to about 800,000 pages out of the 900,000 or so we have indexed. 1. So, first question is, has anyone experienced this before? I removed the files from robots.txt and the number of blocked files has still been climbing. Changed the robots.txt file on the 27th. It is the 29th and the new robots.txt file has been downloaded, but the blocked pages count has been rising in spite of it. 2. I understand that even if a page is blocked by robots.txt, it still shows up in the index, but does anyone know how the blocked page affects the ranking? i.e. while it might still show up even though it has been blocked will google show it at a lower rank because it was blocked by robots.txt? Our current robots.txt just says: User-agent: *

What's the difference between landing pages and entrance pages on Google Analytics?
I'm confused about the difference between entrance pages and landing pages on Google Analytics. If I compare our search traffic to entrance pages with search traffic to landing pages it seems very similar -- but not identical. But this is probably because all of our GA analytics is sampled (we're a huge site). Can anyone help?

Number of Visitor Entries to page via search engine
Hi, I wanted to figure out the most optimal way to track the number of visitors that comes to a specific page on my blog via search engine only. I know Google Analytics has a "top landing page" filter, but that includes all visitors that comes in directly or other channels. Is there a way to figure out how many visitors a certain page received that was generated through only search engine? Does SEOmoz have this capability?
