Localized Search Results
-
I'll try to setup this question: I go to Google.com and set the search tools to a particular city that I am not in (say I live in Nashville but set the search tools for Rockville MD). I do a search for a specific term without a location modifier such as "chrysler town and country" and I don't see the website I'm looking for in the first 100 results. Then I keep the search tools the same, but change the specific search to "chrysler town and country rockville md" and the website I'm looking for is now the #1 result. What would affect the difference? I would have expected the website to have a similar ranking in both situations.

Hi Larry
Glad that all made sense. Sometimes this can get really confusing - I have had a few car dealers in the past that had the same questions and sometimes it's just a matter of expectations and being realistic with search engines.
Let me know if you have any more questions - happy to help where I can!

Thank you Patrick. That does make sense. I assumed if I am in the area that the search engine would take into account local results as well for something like "chrysler town and country" or "chrysler auto service". Both of those do not pull up the website, but adding a location does showing the site in the top 10 results. I see the difference and appreciate the explanation. - Larry

Hi Larry
What you are describing is taking a very specific search like "chrysler town and country" and expecting your site to rank number 1 for it. It's not going to happen. For one, you are asking about a car made by Chrysler, which will lead you directly to the car page as the number 1 result. That page is always going to rank number one for it. If it's not that, it will be a Wikipedia page or a big name car .com of some sort.
The reason why your site is not ranking for that is because at the point you are doing what is called an informational search - you're just looking for information on a specific topic. You're not giving the search engine anything beyond "I just want to see results for the Chrysler Town and Country", so, that's what it gives you; the most relevant search results to that specific topic; it's assuming you're looking for information about the car.
Now, when you tack on "Rockville MD" onto it, you're saying I want to know about Chrysler Town and Country specific to Rockville, MD, hence why your site pops up. I imagine you have the car make and model in the title and it's probably an auto dealership site located within Rockville, MD, correct?
Keep in mind this is nothing to get worked up about, because, again, you are doing a VERY specific topic search in the first search for a brand name that has a lot of authority and who's page will always rank number 1. Your site appears because you've probably optimized for what you were setting out for - ranking for car makes and models at the local level.
If someone is searching just for the make and model, they probably aren't ready to buy, they are probably just wanting information about the car, and might just be looking around. BUT, if they are searching that car in Rockville, MD, they are probably wanting to see prices and more transactional information. You're right where you want to be.
Does this all make sense? Hopefully this helps!

Improving Local Pack results across other services
A company I work for ranks well in the Local Pack under its primary service offering i.e. "primary service Bristol". And also under some other services it offers. However, under other services that are offered, it doesn't show in the local pack despite ranking No 1 in the natural SERPS for the target phrase "example service Bristol". We have pages covering all main services in the main site navigation bar. Is this just the way it is or can something be done to resolve this? Does the detail in the third-party citations have a significant impact? What about the content of the reviews? I note that we are doing better under the services mentioned within the reviews. Should I add additional categories and emulating those used by the competition under the search terms? Or am I missing something else?

Google showing 3 different results for homepage
Hello All! First post in this community. I hope someone can help with an issue I'm having with my website, 3vdental.com. 1. When I Google my brand name, 3V Dental Associates, I see one result on the front page. This result shows ONLY my brand name as the title tag... See here: https://www.screencast.com/t/Vwq4l2Lrn 2. When I Google my domain name, 3vdental.com, I see a second result, that still only shows my brand name as the title tag, but with sitelinks showing in the results... See here: https://www.screencast.com/t/L37hxZ8rd1xp 3. Both results above are not ideal, as they are not displaying the correct title and meta tags set within the Yoast SEO plugin. Here's a front-end view of the site displaying the correct title and meta tags.. See here: https://www.screencast.com/t/CZS3CBja4m Is there any way to correct this so that Google displays my preferred tags when my website is displayed? Thanks for your help in advance!

Ranking nationally but not locally
Hi everyone, I'm working with a client that has a strange situation. He's ranking for his target keyword on a national level but when searching locally, he's in the 100s (see attached). Any idea what could be going on here? He did have an old domain that got hacked that is redirecting to his current domain. Thanks, Tim lmSSXdT

Can you recommend any widgets or additions for a local landing page?
Our company has locations in several different cities, and we're in the process of creating landing pages for each city that feature relevant information. We use Drupal, fwiw. In the past, we've talked about trying to include a local weather widget, a news widget, or something similar as a way to help improve our local rankings for each area. Have you used anything like that? What did you find to be effective? Can you recommend anything similar? Thanks!

Local Ranking Power of a Multi-Keyword URL?
Here is a site that is sitting at number 1 on Google UK (local results) for a number of its keywords: http://www.scottishdentistry.com/ If you look at the links in the navigation many of them have urls such as this: http://www.scottishdentistry.com/glasgow-scotland-dentistry/glasgow-scotland-hygienists.html These have clearly been created to be keyword rich. For example, there is no publicly-available page at: http://www.scottishdentistry.com/glasgow-scotland-dentistry Do you think this tactic has helped with the site's rankings? Is it worth imitating? Or will it ultimately attract a penalty of some kind? Remember this is in the UK where Google seems to be slower at penalising dodgy tactics than in the US. Thanks everyone.

Local SEO question
Hi I was wondering is there any specific rules for Local SEO for a service company which provides a service in a variety of cities but only has one physical location. For example is it ok to target the other cities in Title Tags or would this be frowned upon? Regards
