Pros & Cons of deindexing a site prior to launch of a new site on the same domain.
-
If you were launching a new website to completely replace an older existing site on the same domain, would there be any value in temporarily deindexing the old site prior to launching the new site?
Both have roughly 3000 pages, will launch on the same domain but have a completely new url structure and much better optimized for the web. Many high ranking pages will be redirected with 301 to the corresponding new page.
I believe the hypothesis is this would eliminate a mix of old & new pages from sharing space in the serps and the crawlers are more likely to index more of the new site initially.
I don't believe this is a great strategy, on the other hand I see some merit to the arguments for it.

If you've set up 301 redirects for the important pages (those with links or that get direct traffic from bookmarks, etc), I would simply let the old pages fall out of the index on their own.
Just be sure those old pages are properly returning a 404 status. When Googlebot requests a page and gets this server response, it will deindex the page.
If the old content is problematic for sensitive reasons, you may want to request removal of specific pages - this will stop them from being accessible in Google's cache. There is no other benefit here, and unless there is truly sensitive information or some legal reason to remove those pages, requesting removal of those pages is not worth the effort. It won't help the new pages get indexed faster.

No! Do not deindex your site.
There's something to be said about not doing everything at once. If you see lots of bad pages that will not be used and can not be redirected then let them go to 404. I think this is recommend on account of panda and only having good content and not redirecting bad content to good content. But you are losing link juice.

Main Site and eCommerce Site URLs for SEO
My client currently has a main website on a url and an eCommerce site on a subdomain. The eCommerce site is currently not mobile friendly, has images that are too small and are problematic - and I believe it negates some of the SEO work we do for them. I had to turn off Google Shopping ads because the quality score was so low. That being said, they are rebuilding a shopping cart on a new platform that will be mobile friendly BUT the images are going to be tiny until they slowly replace images over several months. Would you keep the shopping cart on a subdomain, or make it part of the main website URL? Can it negatively impact the progress we have made on the main site SEO.

Our client's site was owned by former employee who took over the site. What should be done? Is there a way to preserve all the SEO work?
A client had a member of the team leave on bad terms. This wasn't something that was conveyed to us at all, but recently it came up when the distraught former employee took control of the domain and locked everyone out. At first, this was assumed to be a hack, but eventually it was revealed that one of the company starters who unhappily left the team owned the domain all along and is now holding it hostage. Here's the breakdown: -Every page aside from the homepage is now gone and serving a 404 response code -The site is out of our control -The former employee is asking for a $1 million ransom to sell the domain back -The homepage is a "countdown clock" that isn't actively counting down, but claims that something exciting is happening in 3 days and lists a contact email. The question is how we can save the client's traffic through all this turmoil. Whether buying a similar domain and starting from square one and hoping we can later redirect the old site's pages after getting it back. Or maybe we have a legal claim here that we do not see even though the individual is now the owner of the site. Perhaps there's a way to redirect the now defunct pages to a new site somehow? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I am in the process of transitioning sites to a Drupal CMS and am curious to know what META information to provide on each of the new site pages. Currently, this is the set-up I plan on using: My questions to the community are: whether or not I've added all pertinent information, and if there's anything I'm overlooking

What research needs to be done prior to purchasing an old domain?
I'm planning on purchasing an old domain. I'd like to get an idea whether or not any "shadyness" was going on with the domain over the years. It's still indexed in google. I "whois'd" it, ran it through open site explorer, and did a "link:" search. Anything else you would recommend for researching this domain?
