IPs and Domains

If a domain loads on the domain and the IP is that a problem?
So it loads on domain.com and 69.16.....com
Thanks!
-
Oh - the IP is the old server, not the IP of the current one? All of the above still applies, except it just got a lot easier!
Redirect all traffic on the old server to the new one (301 redirect). Failing that just turn off the old one.

Thanks Mat! Do you think I should disallow the IP address from the old server. The one that this site was switched from?
Thanks again.

Sitemap.xml is useful, but it won't help with this issue I am afraid. To solve the problem of the wrong version of the site being indexed you need to instruct search engines that they are looking at the wrong version. It might sound logical to give them a list of the right URLs, but that is not enough. They don't follow the logic of "... and ignore the rest".
There are 2 main ways to go about this. I personally prefer the first, but either is a win. Unfortunately both method will probably require the help of your developer.
Option 1 - 301 Redirects
A rule is added to the server that says "if a user requests a url of http://69.16.xx.xx/pagename.html send them instead to http://www.example.com/pagename.html . Also send a 301 code - and instruction that the old address has been moved permenantly.
Depending on your server set-up this is most likely done by adding some redirect rules to the .htaccess file on the server. Quick easy job for someone who knows that they are doing - literally a few minutes.
Option 2 - rel Canonical
Depending on what powers you site this might be simpler. A conditional statement is added to the code that checks that pages are being served from correct sub/domain. If they are not then a simple tag is added to the HTML output that points the search engines towards the correct address.
If you are using a CMS to power the site this might be a simple change. A few lines added to a common template. Again, quite a fast job. If you are using static pages you won't have the option to use this method.
If all of the above sounds like gibberish then you need to talk to the developer. If not,. then great!
I hope that is some help. I wouldn't panic about this. Even if the IP address versions do all get indexed it is probably not going to cause a big problem to be honest. However if you can you should get it fixed.

Thank you Mat. I am seeing the IP address being cache and am considering adding a sitemap to the IP address in my sitemap index xml file. Does this sound like a good idea?

Do you mean if the site loads by visiting domain.com and 69.16.xx.xx ?
If so it is only a problem if it starts getting indexed, which usually doesn't happen unless someone links to it. You could have a redirect in place just in case (via .htaccess or similar). Many designed to catch the www and non-www versions would catch this as well anyway.
However, unless you start seeing the ip version appearing in the results I wouldn't overly worry about this.

Domain Masking SEO Impact
I hope I am explaining this correctly. If I need to provide any clarity please feel free to ask. We currently use a domain mask on an external platform that points back to our site. We are a non-profit and the external site allows users to create peer-to peer fundraisers that benefit our ministry. Currently we get many meta issues related to this site as well as broken links when fundraisers expire etc. We do not have a need to rank for the information from this site. Is there a way to index these pages so that they are not a part of the search engine site crawls as it relates to our site?

Forwarding a .org domain to a .com domain: any negative impact to consider?
Hello! I have a question I've been unable to find a clear answer to. My client's primary domain is a .com with a satisfactorily high DA. My client owns the .org version of its domain (which has a very low DA, I suppose due to inactivity) but has never forwarded it on. For branding/visibility/traffic reasons, I'd like to recommend they set up the .org domain to forward to the .com domain, but I wanted to ask a few questions first: 1. Does forwarding low-value DA domains to high-value DA domains have any negative authority/SEO impact? 2. If the .org domain was to be forwarded, am I correct that an SSL cert is not necessary for it if the .com domain has an SSL cert? Thanks in advance!

Sub Domain Redirect
Hey Everyone, Here is the situation : Currently, a website's sub domain is being redirected to the main website home page. We're having issues getting the sub domain pages indexed. Just want to confirm that it is because of the redirect on the sub domain URL. Should we kill the sub domain redirect and set it up as it's own page? Will that solve the indexing issue for the sub domain pages. More explanation below: subdomain.domain.com currently redirects to domain.com We're having issues indexing pages belonging to the sub domain ( subdomain.url.com/page1 or subdomain.url.com/page2) Appreciate your input in advance. Cheers,

I have a sub domain that has live content on it but the root domain redirects to another URL. I know this is not great but what are the implications?
I have a subdomain that is populated and has content. The root domain that the sub lives on redirects to an entirely different URL. I am trying to make a case as to why this isn't great besides the fact that it is just weird user experiences. What are the SEO implications etc. Would any equity that gets built up on the subdomain get passed along in the redirect? Or will there be indexation issues with Google? Cheers, Mark

Anybody having success with Cross-Domain canonical?
Has anyone been using rel="canonical" to attribute content that has been republished on Domain B... back to Domain A, which is the original source? The videos below say that this should be working... I am asking to hear from anyone who has done it. Has it worked as you expected? Did Domain A get the benefit that you expected? Thanks! ========== Source Videos ============= Matt Cutts (April, 2012) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI6L2N4A0hA Matt Cutts (April, 2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8XdFb6LGtM Rand Fishkin (August, 2012) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8drPXudZZc

Domains and Hosting Question
I bought hosting for unlimited domains on Godaddy. It's not a dedicated server. It was just $85 a year. I have unlimited latency but a limited amount of "space." I don't know a lot about hosting servers etc... My question is relatively simple. When I go in GoDaddy to my hosting. There is a site that shows up as hosted, and all of the other sites show up under that site in it's directory. If you type the name of the site I bought the hosted package on, then type a forward slash and the name of one of the other sites on the hosting package, you will actually go to the other website. What is this relationship? Is it normal? Does that make all of my websites subdomains of the main site (that I bought the hosting package on)? I don't fully comprehend how this effects everything...

Sub Domain SEO
I am thinking to Add Sub Domains to get better rankings for Local Searches. So I will develop City Specific Sites with Specific Language. For Example qatar.wisnetsol.com. IT will be in Arabic. If my Good standing and Ranking on Google for wisnetsol.com will help my subdomain to rank better? if we setup wisnetsol.com/qatar, how it can target Qatar in Google Webmaster tools? Will links for qatar.wisnetsol.com and wisnetsol.com are seprate? What do you think about this strategy? Is it good or bad?
