Duplicate Video Onsite - How do you treat this in Sitemap?
-
How would you handle multiple pages using the same video content? As sometimes it does not make sense to have new videos for every product so you re purpose.
Will you still get the effects in search results if the thumbs and video location is duplicated for some product urls?
-
Hey Andrew,
So, as far as i am aware you will need unique thumbs and video locations. You might be able to duplicate thumb information, but any duplicate locations will flag as a GMWT error.
There's nothing technically stopping you uploading the same video to your hosting package time and time again and then just placing the duplicate videos on different URLs and submitting a sitemap with unique video:content_locelements despite having duplicate content.</video:content_loc>
However, this isn't a brilliant thing to be doing and sooner or later, Google will work out that you're using duplicated videos and you could then get devalued for it, which will prevent you from getting nice blended video results
There are a few things which will indicate to G that you're duplicating:
- Audio Wave forms.
Google can crawl elements of audio files.- It's how they ascertain a lot of copyright infringements on YouTube - by matching wave forms.
- Video Lengths
If you have tons of videos, all of which are the identical length and have identical thumbnails - it's going to be obvious.
- YouTube Hosting
If you're using YouTube to host your videos - it will abundantly clear to YouTube that you've duplicated the content, by the inevitably poor hotspots metrics you'll receive and the lack of views. For product videos, as a rule, i would recommend avoiding YouTube for hosting anyway - Wistia is a great option for that sort of stuff.
Duplicate videos are ultimately the same as duplicate body text and are more or less frowned upon by the engines if exercised at too great a scale - especially following Panda. Ideally, you want to be thinking big and aiming for the unique videos - not only from a Search perspective, but also from a CRO and user perspective. No user is going to enjoy browsing the site if they end up watching the same content multiple times.
I contest the idea that you can't scale unique video content easily. You just need to work out which elements can be duplicated and which need to be unique. Always get unique audio - and wrap some stock elements around a small portion of unique footage. I produced the following YouTube series in 1 day. Filmed, cut, edited and uploaded 64 unique videos.
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDCBEEAFF5571810B
They're not complicated, flashy or impressive - but they are all unique, full HD and with appropriate metadata, which is the minimum you need to aim for.
If you have thousands of products for an ecommerce site - sure, it might take a few weeks to produce everything. But you'll be much better off for it.
anyway, hope that's helpful!
Cheers,
Phil

.xml sitemap showing in SERP
Our sitemap is showing in Google's SERP. While it's only for very specific queries that don't seem to have much value (it's a healthcare website and when a doctor who isn't with us is search with the brand name so 'John Smith Brand,' it shows if there's a first or last name that matches the query), is there a way to not make the sitemap indexed so it's not showing in the SERP. I've seen the "x-robots-tag: noindex" as a possible option, but before taking any action wanted to see if this was still true and if it would work.

Duplicate blog URLs in Magenton
On one my sites Moz is picking up 4483 duplicate content pages. The majority of these are from our blog and video sections on our site. We're using a URL shortener and it appears that some of the pages are the full version of the URL then the shortened version. However if you go to the full version you get redirected to the shorter one. So I would assume that the Moz crawler should get the same redirect? We're also getting pagination being shown as duplicate pages, which I would half expect, but the URLs Magento is creating are truly bizarre: e.g http://www.xxx.com/uk/blog/cat/view/identifier/news/page/news/index.php/alarms-doorbells/?p=2 Alarms and doorbells is one of our product categories, which is displayed in the LHN on the blog page but has nothing to do with the blog itself. On another site on the same Magento instance, with the same content (they're for two different regions) we're show as having 248 duplicate pages, again in the video and news section, but this is a completely different scale of issue. Has anyone else encountered issues like these? I'm probably going to put a noindex in place on these two sections until we can get a solution in place as we're completely unranked in google on this site. Thanks

How would you create and then segment a large sitemap?
I have a site with around 17,000 pages and would like to create a sitemap and then segment it into product categories. Is it best to create a map and then edit it in something like xmlSpy or is there a way to silo sitemap creation from the outset?

Duplicate Page Title for Wordpress
Hello, We are using WP for our blog and keep getting Dup Page Title errors for our 12 author archives pages. The title of each page is the same, but I am wondering if this is WP issue with canonicalization working properly. The most recent four pages have a linking root domain and carry some Page Authority, but the older pages do not. Is this what Rand was talking about in his Google+ whiteboard Friday talk about blog post relevancy not lasting as long as articles? Here's what it looks like. Side question, is there a reason why the SEO Moz website doesn't have a Google+ button anywhere easy to find? Thank you, Michael

How critical is Duplicate content warnings?
Hi, So I have created my first campaign here and I have to say the tools, user interface and the on-page optimization, everything is useful and I am happy with SEOMOZ. However, the crawl report returned thousands of errors and most of them are duplicate content warnings. As we use Drupal as our CMS, the duplicate content is caused by Drupal's pagination problems. Let's say there is a page called "/top5list" , the crawler decided /top5list?page=1" to be duplicate of "/top5list". There is no real solution for pagination problems in Drupal (as far as I know). I don't have any warnings in Google's webmaster tools regarding this and my sitemap I submitted to Google doesn't include those problematic deep pages. (that are detected as duplicate content by SEOMOZ crawler) So my question is, should I be worried about the thousands of error messages in crawler diagnostics? any ideas appreciated

Duplicate content
I have just ran a report in seomoz on my domain and has noticed that there are duplicate content issues, the issues are: www.domainname/directory-name/ www.domainname/directory-name/index.php All my internal links and external links point to the first domain, as i prefer this style as it looks clear & concise, however doing this has created duplicate content as within the site itself i have an index.php page inside this /directory-name/ to show the page. Could anyone give me some advice on what i should do please? Kind Regards

Duplicate content?
I have a question regarding a warning that I got on one of my websites, it says Duplicate content. I'm canonical url:s and is also using blocking Google out from pages that you are warning me about. The pages are not indexed by Google, why do I get the warnings? Thanks for great seotools! 3M5AY.png
