Duplicate Page Title for Wordpress
-
Hello,
We are using WP for our blog and keep getting Dup Page Title errors for our 12 author archives pages. The title of each page is the same, but I am wondering if this is WP issue with canonicalization working properly. The most recent four pages have a linking root domain and carry some Page Authority, but the older pages do not.
Is this what Rand was talking about in his Google+ whiteboard Friday talk about blog post relevancy not lasting as long as articles? Here's what it looks like.
Side question, is there a reason why the SEO Moz website doesn't have a Google+ button anywhere easy to find?
Thank you,
Michael

This was raised as a potential issue in another thread I was contributing in, and its better to follow, noindex category pages, paged > 1, and author archives to help avoid duplicate content issues.
It's better to build this functionality into the theme because if you suddenly decided to change the WordPress plugin from Yoast to something else then the new plugin may or may not provide a means of either canonicalising or noindexing the relevant pages.
I wrote an article about this here: http://www.laceytechsolutions.co.uk/blog/wordpress-development/avoiding-duplicate-content-in-wordpress/
I know plugins are persistent through theme changes and that is why they are popular with most users but for something like this hard coding seems to be the best way to go.
In my blog post I use the following code):
1){ echo ''; } ?> '; } ?> '; } ?>
This could be condensed as follows if you want to use all three:
1 || is_author() || is_trackback())
echo '';
} ?>I hope this helps
For the record, for my blog SEO Moz is showing no errors and no warnings across the board.

Hi,
I found this problem on my blog yesterday, dupe content found through tag, author and date archives.
Installed Yoast SEO for Wordpress plug in, its awesome and free.
http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/
Theres some guides on the canonical and dup content issues on the link above.
Enjoy

I had a similar problem with tag, read more and categories reported as duplicates. I resolved it by installing Nofollow Home Internal Links plugin which made all the non essential links nofollow

Duplicate Page Titles Issue in Campaign Crawl Error Report
Hello All! Looking at my campaign I noticed that I have a large number of 'duplicate page titles' showing up but all they are the various pages at the end of the URL. Such as, http://thelemonbowl.com/tag/chocolate/page/2 as a duplicate of http://thelemonbowl.com/tag/chocolate. Any suggestions on how to address this? Thanks!

Duplicate pages in Google index despite canonical tag and URL Parameter in GWMT
Good morning Moz... This is a weird one. It seems to be a "bug" with Google, honest... We migrated our site www.three-clearance.co.uk to a Drupal platform over the new year. The old site used URL-based tracking for heat map purposes, so for instance www.three-clearance.co.uk/apple-phones.html ..could be reached via www.three-clearance.co.uk/apple-phones.html?ref=menu or www.three-clearance.co.uk/apple-phones.html?ref=sidebar and so on. GWMT was told of the ref parameter and the canonical meta tag used to indicate our preference. As expected we encountered no duplicate content issues and everything was good. This is the chain of events: Site migrated to new platform following best practice, as far as I can attest to. Only known issue was that the verification for both google analytics (meta tag) and GWMT (HTML file) didn't transfer as expected so between relaunch on the 22nd Dec and the fix on 2nd Jan we have no GA data, and presumably there was a period where GWMT became unverified. URL structure and URIs were maintained 100% (which may be a problem, now) Yesterday I discovered 200-ish 'duplicate meta titles' and 'duplicate meta descriptions' in GWMT. Uh oh, thought I. Expand the report out and the duplicates are in fact ?ref= versions of the same root URL. Double uh oh, thought I. Run, not walk, to google and do some Fu: http://is.gd/yJ3U24 (9 versions of the same page, in the index, the only variation being the ?ref= URI) Checked BING and it has indexed each root URL once, as it should. Situation now: Site no longer uses ?ref= parameter, although of course there still exists some external backlinks that use it. This was intentional and happened when we migrated. I 'reset' the URL parameter in GWMT yesterday, given that there's no "delete" option. The "URLs monitored" count went from 900 to 0, but today is at over 1,000 (another wtf moment) I also resubmitted the XML sitemap and fetched 5 'hub' pages as Google, including the homepage and HTML site-map page. The ?ref= URls in the index have the disadvantage of actually working, given that we transferred the URL structure and of course the webserver just ignores the nonsense arguments and serves the page. So I assume Google assumes the pages still exist, and won't drop them from the index but will instead apply a dupe content penalty. Or maybe call us a spam farm. Who knows. Options that occurred to me (other than maybe making our canonical tags bold or locating a Google bug submission form 😄 ) include A) robots.txt-ing .?ref=. but to me this says "you can't see these pages", not "these pages don't exist", so isn't correct B) Hand-removing the URLs from the index through a page removal request per indexed URL C) Apply 301 to each indexed URL (hello BING dirty sitemap penalty) D) Post on SEOMoz because I genuinely can't understand this. Even if the gap in verification caused GWMT to forget that we had set ?ref= as a URL parameter, the parameter was no longer in use because the verification only went missing when we relaunched the site without this tracking. Google is seemingly 100% ignoring our canonical tags as well as the GWMT URL setting - I have no idea why and can't think of the best way to correct the situation. Do you? 🙂 Edited To Add: As of this morning the "edit/reset" buttons have disappeared from GWMT URL Parameters page, along with the option to add a new one. There's no messages explaining why and of course the Google help page doesn't mention disappearing buttons (it doesn't even explain what 'reset' does, or why there's no 'remove' option).

Yoast WP SEO Plugin: Duplicate Title / Description For Pagination
Hello, I just have installed on YAOST WP SEO plugin on my blog to optimize and get better results, as I was using All in one seo Plugin before. On Tuesday SEOMOZ crawler has been updated my site report and I found several errors with my site related to duplicate meta title / description. Home Page Pagination, Categories/archive pagination and tags pagination bring the same meta title and description. I tried several methods to get the required result but unfortunately nothing helped. I used %%pagenumber%% and %%page%% etc. Any help will be highly appreciated.

A week ago I asked how to remove duplicate files and duplicate titles
Three weeks ago we had a very large number of site errors revealed by crawl diagostics. These errors related purely to the presence of both http://domain name and http://www.domain name. We used the rel canonical tag in the head of our index page to direct all to the www. preference, and we have no improvement. Matters got worse two weeks ago and I checked with Google Webmaster and found that Google had somehow lost our preference choice. A week ago I asked how to overcome this problem and received good advice about how to re-enter our preference for the www.tag with Google. This we did and it was accepted. We aso submitted a new sitemap.xml which was also acceptable to Google. Today, a week later we find that we have even more duplicate content (over 10,000 duplicate errors) showing up in the latest diagnostic crawl. Does anyone have any ideas? (Getting a bit desperate.)

Is there any way to solve this?

WordPress E-Commerce Plugin Duplicate Content Problem
I am working on a wordpress website that uses the WP E-Commerce plugin. I am using the Yoast seo plugin but not totally familiar with it. I have noticed that WP E-Commerce creates duplicate content issues. Here's an example: http://www.domain.com/parent-category/product-url-1/ is the same content as http://www.domain.com/parent-category/child-category/product-url-1/. I was wondering which of these following options are the best solution: 1. 301 redirect the multiple instances to one page
Technical SEO | | theanglemedia
2. noindex all but one instance
3. Use the canonical tag (i've used this tag before for telling SE's to use the www version of a page but not sure if it's the appropriate for this)
4. a combination of one of these 3 options? Thanks in advance!0
