WordPress blog hosted on GoDaddy domain mapping help
-
We set up a WP blog that's hosted through GoDaddy. For various reasons, we purchased a URL to use to get through the technical build and set up and are trying to map that to a subdomain of our company website. (We can't host it on our own server, unfortunately).
My question is: for WP blogs hosted via WP you can buy a domain mapping upgrade and I'm trying to find a similar plugin that could offer the same thing that would apply to our GoDaddy hosting and point to our subdomain (GD apparently doesn't offer the domain mapping).
Anyone have any thoughts, please?

Hi Dan,
I know this is an old question but I wanted to ask if using MultiSite and Domain Mapping had any negative impact on search rankings? Or do the search engines treat the mapped domain as a completely unique domain?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Andrea,
No I didn't need a dedicated IP address when setting up MultiSite. That being said I 've not installed MultiSite on shared hosting before. I would try installing it and setting it up first on the shared hosting first.
A dedicated IP isn't necessary.
-
One last random question, pls: have you had to purchase a dedicated IP if using shared hosting? I think we may need to but before we go making this bigger without promise of it paying off, I thought I'd see if you maybe had run into this and how it may have turned out? Pls.
-
Yeah I found that same issue, that's why I went down the route of setting up a MultiSite installation. Hope you can get everything sorted out

Thanks for taking time to follow up and I appreciate you and Ben offering help. I'll work with my designer and report back
Cheers, Andrea

Hi Andrea
I've had a quick look, and I think Ben has the right idea by trying that plugin. I found two resources for you to go along with it:
WP Multi Site Domain Mapping <--there's some stuff about GD in the comments
I think between the plugin Ben mentioned and those resources, that should get you there.

Dan, small world, indeed! Correct; we tried and ended up in an infinite loop with our Apache system and my web designer has been trying a plug in or two to see if there's a way to map the domain. We seem to be hitting all kinds of random hiccups and as none of us are network admin savvy, I thought this may be a good place for the road less traveled. Thanks for reaching out! Andrea.

Hi Andrea!
Funny, you just tweeted to me today and then I was assigned to help you out with this question
Anyway, just want to make sure I understand exactly how things are setup to see if your question has been answered.
Is this correct?
-
You used www.wordpress.org (not .com) and installed a WP blog on a domain hosted with Go Daddy? In other words, you installed the WP files etc into your Go Daddy hosting account?
-
And you want that blog to map to like blog.yourdomain.com ?
Let me know, thanks!

You could always setup a multi-site installation of WordPress and use the following plugin.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping
This should do what you're after, if it doesn't let me know and I can have a think about how we can sort this out for you.
-
I wish - setting up an alias like that doesn't gel with how WP handles domain mapping. It broke all our links out.
-
Isn't this more of a DNS question? Shouldn't it just go:
site.tempurl.com is an alias for newsite.realurl.com?
And then you change the base domain/config in WordPress so it never references tempurl.com ever again?

Is there anything wrong to have large number of internal links pointing to homepage? Including links from sub domains or sub directories?
Hi all, Generally more number of internal links will be pointed to homepage. But I see some modern suggestions that too many internal links to homepage are not good. I'm just wondering if most number of internal links pointing to homepage may hurt? Also we have sub domains, can we point a link from every page of sub domain or sub directory to homepage? Usually the answer here is about users. Of course, the content is about same product across all pages. Thanks

Replacing Slider Image WordPress
Hi Everyone, I decided to delete my slider from my homepage and replace it with a static image. However, after I deleted the slider, I'm left with a dark square where the slider used to be. I want to put my new static image in that same spot, but have no idea how. Does anyone know where or what code I should add to do that? The page is www.kempruge.com The WP Forums never seem to be too helpful for me, but Moz always is! Thanks in advance, Ruben

CSS styling help needed
I'm hoping that to someone experienced this is a quick fix, but it may be a pain and a rat's nest of code. Five or so years ago, I designed my brother's website at https://www.argentdata.com/index.html. I built it off of the Mollio theme (http://www.mollio.org/), and used templates in Dreamweaver, so it's not in a CMS. It's not a work of art, and there are some issues with it, but it's served him fairly well. Longer-term it needs a redesign, but right now I'm asking about just one aspect of the existing design. There are two parts to the site - the plain HTML site, and the osCommerce store that's under the purchase tab. If you go to http://www.argentdata.com/catalog/ you'll see that the osCommerce store is full width, while the navigation header copied over from the main site is 1200 pixels wide and centered. If you're on a wide monitor, it looks weird. What he'd like to do: Make the main site align to the left, both the content and navigation, and make the navigation left aligned for the osCommerce portion. He figures this is the easier way to do things, rather than try to muck with osCommerce CSS (that also has some merged CSS from the Mollio theme) and get it to center. Does anyone have a fairly simple solution that can make the navigation bar look good on osCommerce? Either the above of making everything left aligned, or some other solution simple we haven't thought of? Thanks!

Missing Meta Description Tag - Wordpress Tag
I am going through my crawl diagonostics issues and I have lots of "Missing Meta Description Tags". However when I look at the url's they are Wordpress Tags, which do not have a meta description. Shall I just ignore these errors or should I find a way to add a meta description? Is it important?

Best hosting solution for linkbait videos
I'm creating a series of link bait videos. I want people to link to the pages on my site hosting the videos. What's the best site to host them on, if my primary concern is to get do-followed links? I'm worried about putting them on YouTube, as I imagine most of the links will be to the page on youtube.com, or worse, just directly embedded.

Stuck with domain: www.kumficars.co.uk
Hi community, I was hoping you could help me. I have a website which I'm running for a client, www.kumficars.co.uk, and it's not featuring at all on google for the primary keyword: Taxi Knutsford I have absolutely no idea why. I've produced a campaign report and am acting on it now, but even that didn't pull much up other than a missing meta description tag, which I'm updating now. Other than that, I can't see any reason why the website shouldn't rank - the competition isn't even difficult! Can anyone shed some light please?
