One of our clients had a negative youtube review which is really hurting their reputation. The problem was solved and not even at fault of our client.  The uploader of the video was contacted, but has forgotten the username/password on the account.

If you search for the brand name of the company, this video shows up 2nd on organic google results which is pretty embarrassing.

What strategies would you all use to minimize the effects of this video?  Would you buy an adword for the company name to push the video down?

I would think that buying AdWords for your brand name would be a good/affordable solution until you outrank that video. Benefits are:

      • Those ads could potentially move the negative video down the page visually.
      • Clickthroughs to your site will be affordable.

"The uploader of the video was contacted, but has forgotten the username/password on the account."

that sounds like he is willing to take it down but doesn't know how to? if that is the case i would work with him to get access to that account and delete it. Even if you have to offer to pay him a few bucks via paypal it's worth it if it's ranking well and getting hits - and it must be if it is ranking #2 for your company name that' huge. Get it removed it's costing you business.

Adwords will help a bit. Many people don't click on Ads that often, and a video thumbnail is very enticing for a click-through. Especially one that appears negative.

Thank you both for your replies.  We are currently designing their new site, which will have video testimonials embedded.  Those testimonials are already up on youtube, but the negative review seems to be ranking higher because it has the most views.  Hopefully once embedded, they will push the negative down. It seems like the total number of views has the most dramatic impact on SERPS in this case.

Does anyone see a reason why adwords wouldn't be a good short term fix?

It might be a good idea for your client to get good reviews in video format. Have them contact their past customers who are happy and would be willing to review them on camera. Post these video testimonials on YouTube and embed them on the client website.

You can also have the company create an "Brand Name - About Us" video which gives insight into the company for prospects. Explain how they do business and why they are best choice over their competition. You can also ask questions in the video and encourage watchers to comment.

If these videos you create have more interaction and more popularity than the other negative video, and is relevant for the same search terms (Brand Name) then that negative video will probably drop off the first page of organic / universal results.

Adwords is definitely an option and may help a bit.

Some other things I would try is to create a Facebook Page, Twitter Profile, G+ Page, Wikipedia Entry, YouTube Channel and Linked-In Company Profile. Official company pages on a strong domain like these, often has the ability to rank quite high and push down the other profiles.

Create these profiles and do a really good job filling them out. Full of information about your company. Then, link to them from your actual website. Build a few other easy links (comments, forums, whatever) to these social profiles. Get some link equity flowing their way.

Also, create your own YouTube video. Perhaps a newer video with a good title will push it out of that spot. Put the video on your website.

                Good luck!

Can we use Youtube Videos of google webmaster on blog post?

Is it okay to embed YouTube videos of channel which we don't own? For example, I have written a blog on enabling event search in Google Analytics and Google Webmasters YouTube channel has a video based on those steps. I am looking to add that video in my blog.

Changed the trailing slashes - how it effect SEO?

Hi,  I'm doing a project called https://www.machinerygate.com/ Due to trailing slashes issues, our developer requests to remove the trailing slashes from the URLs. However, the homepage with and without trailing slashes the same effect right. How about the inner pages affect SEO. Because we just started to do SEO and not even one single link of Inner pages done with the process. However, for example, the URL for https://www.machinerygate.com/machinery/cranes/ is before with trailing slashes and it is on google indexed with trailing slashes. Due to some bug, google inspection tool has been not functioning nowadays and I'm finding hard to index the new URL without trailing slashes https://www.machinerygate.com/machinery/cranes to index on Google. If this gets indexed, how the URL with trailing slashes will be, does it automatically redirect to URL without trailing slashes or not? Please share your thought about this concern.

Why not just use an alias if the only change is a different domain Name?

We are rebranding our store with a new name. We have purchased a NewDomainName.  Can I just make the "Old Domain Name" an alias for the "NewDomainName"? The site will not change in any other way than having a new logo.  This is an e-commerce site with over 100 categories of artisan made products.  So once we move the site, the old domain will be empty. Thank you Stephen

Should our rebranded company update our existing Instagram profile or delete it and start from scratch?

Our company just did a complete rebrand with a new name and logo. Instagram allows us to change our name, username, logo, and information, unlike Facebook, but there isn't a lot of online content about whether or not that's the best route.  Any thoughts?

Do review sites like consumer affairs negatively affect SERPs?

Hey all, So when googling the name of our site we see consumer affairs pop up around 5th with a 1 star rating. These negative reviews are mostly spammy (competitors, etc.) since we have an awesome support team that deals with all unhappy members very effectively. We reached out to CA and they came back asking for $10k+ (highway robbery) to "help us improve our rating." My question is: do poor ratings on review sites like these negatively affect your SERPs? And if so, how can we work to combat their effect? Thanks in advance, Roman

What is the most appropriate way to invite writers and blogger to visit my hotel, in exchange for a review?

My client's own several hotels in Los Angeles. I thought it would be a good idea to ask writers and bloggers to visit the hotel, free of charge, in exchange for a review or write up. Of course, we want to be above board and up front with everything, including encouraging any review to be the truth and forthright, however I just not sure how best to ask them.  Sometimes I ramble on and have trouble getting to the point and I know its really important here. Does anyone have any advice here? Many thanks!

How to get Google to link external review sites in Google Places

Hi, I have several company profiles in Google Places and Google Sites, I also have the same profiles for those companies in review sites like Yelp! and so on. I have seen that other sites have links on the bottom where Google points to those external review sites, but that doesn't happen for me yet, is there a way to tell Google that I have profiles on other review sites so they can link them or is it Google whenever they find them that will link them? Here's an example: http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=14126341780178539960&hl=en At the bottom you'll see that it says: Reviews from around the web Now this is one of mine: http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=12168877126282825032&hl=en Now how do I get that line at the bottom provided that I know there are reviews out there in other sites? Is there something I can do? Or is it all about Google doing it whenever they see fit? Thank you!

Video's Pros and Cons - YouTube vs My website or both?

This isn't really a question per say, but more of a request for advise. We are in the process of creating videos for our travel website. They are more informational and do not promote any products as such. I am aware of the options, and I am leaning towards creating a pro account with Vimeo so that the videos are available only on our website. The reason for this is so that we can at least get credit for our work, as when they are on you tube, anybody can syndicate the video without linking to our website. I am also aware that there are allot of searches happening on YouTube, and it may be worse if we choose not to upload our videos there as we would loose out on a big audience. it would be GREAT if we had the best of both options. And i had an idea i want to get your opinions on. Create the video and upload onto our website with "lower competitive" title / meta / body. Submit the video on YouTube with a "Higher competitive" keyword / title /meta and description. When someone finds our video, they might search YouTube to avoid linking back and wont find it, (although it is there getting traffic from a similar keyword) Branding is the number 1 objective for these videos, so you tube + many other video sites would be the way to go. However, i would also like our own "private" video blog on our site so that if web masters like the video, we can give them the option of embedding it on there site (like SEOMOZ do it on there whiteboard Fridays) Your comments and suggestions will be muchly appreciated. Greg
