Local SEO: By city, by multiple cities, or by region?
-
My client is a kitchen remodeling company in Sterling, Virginia and is trying to rank well in local results. I am struggling with keyword selection mostly because I am still learning about local SEO.
The city the company is located is Sterling, however their business comes from several other close by cities like Reston, Herndon, and Fairfax (Nobody lives in Sterling so they don't care too much about owning that in search engines).
Is the right strategy:
1. Choosing one city and focusing on that (kitchen remodeling in reston, VA)
2. Optimizing for multiple cities (kitchen remodeling, reston, herndon, fairfax...)
3. Optimizing for an entire region (kitchen remodeling, northern virginia)
I know it's hard to answer this with little information but gut reactions would be appreciated.
I am a new SEOmoz member so excuse me if this question is too specific for this forum. I'm still getting a feel for the community.
Thanks!
Sean

Thanks Aaron. The client listed about 16 cities that they do business in. Do you think limiting that list to about 5 cities is a good idea?
thanks

In Google places as well as on Adwords you can select your geographic area. As far as keywords go you can target multiple cities with keywords on the site (option 2) and through the anchor text on links. I have seen this work just fine on several auto websites - something I know a bit about.

If it isn't competitive, you may still display in a larger geo. You may consider multiple listings in areas which are so far away that you arent displaying in. This suggestion will probably get a lot of flack as it can be considered to be map spam.
I have done this in very limited situations. It involves getting an address in a new locality to verify your listing. I think google has gotten better and combatting this although I have had a client do it with very good success. They still get a lot of call on these listing.
Do not go overboard (a few extras at most)! also don't list anywhere if you really cant compete there. It's an option but a controversial one.

For Local SEO use Google Places/Maps - you should target the local cities individually and then optimize the Google map listing from there
you can also cover the county and norther part of state - this will work in MSN/Bing as well
Also combine Yelp and other local search engines as alot of local traffic is going through yelp

Apostrophes impact on SEO
I have a question about the use of Apostrohes in the text of your site for your keyword. Most of the info I have found says in most cases it does not matter, but it depends. Most of the info about this issue I have found is a few years old. I am leaning towards not using it at all to make it easier for everyone writing for the website to always do it the same way. Here is an example: Lawyer’s Lawyers' Lawyers Does it matter if I use the apostrophe?

Wordpress SEO: Category page + Product page or only category page?
Trying to improving my website's ranks on google for a specific keyword (e.g. Samsung S6), I'm thinking about doing some experiments. I've a wordpress based blog. Now, I've the category "Samsung S6" (url: example.com/samsung-s6), with only the latest 6 news (with excerpts) + pagination. This ranks good, but it's a bit ugly as a landing page and I want a better rank. I could improve this page by customizing the template and adding some static text, but it could be a time-consuming solution considering that I'm using a third party theme and I should check this every update. Also, it's harder to customize this page then the next solution: I'm thinking about creating a new page Samsung S6 (url: example.com/samsungs6). This page will contain a product overlay (e.g. RAM, HD, screen size etc.), + product description with features and a small review of it's elements (e.g. camera description with results, suggested applications etc.) + some images/youtube videos + latest 6 news (without excerpts) + some links to other relevant pages in my website for that product, including a link to the category page. What will happen in terms of SEO? Any idea if the new page could rank better than the category page, considering that it has more static elements? Not sure if google could detects duplicates, or two page comepting for the same keyword on the same website is a bad thing. Which are your ideas? Is it ok to have two pages competing for the same keyword on the same website?

Should I Build A Niche City Site or Link to Existing Directory?
I have a main site for real estate that works fairly well. There's city pages within the site. I have been able to get the specific citynamehomesforsale.com domain and now I'm back to the old question of whether to build out a high traffic niche site to capitalize on the exact keyword match or should I just link it to the directory (domain.com/city) Thanks!

How to estimate search volume for multiple long tail queries?
I am comparing Moz, WordTracker and Google keyword research tools and trying to figure out how I can compare the aggregated search volume for a page which targets several similar long-tail queries. For instance, according to one tool, the query 'printable guitar sheet music' has 125 monthly searches, but many small variations of this also have a similar amount. Do I just make a reasonable list and calculate them? Or do I just use "125" as an abstract number of measurement with no concrete reference to a **real **number of searchers, but useful in comparing one keyword to the next, and assume that all key words have a similar degree of consorting variations? I seem to remember Google used to give away some pretty damned useful information in the keyword search tool, including monthly search volume. But now it looks like the metric is not actual search volume, but a 1-100 score based on the search volume. So my questions are: Should I try to convert these numbers into real search figure estimates or just use them for comparing one to the next? Should I worry about trying to combine the aggregated variations of long tail keyword searches, or should I just choose one good keyword and let that represent all possible variations?

Using city location in keywords?
Hi all, new to SEO MOZ and SEO in general. I'm trying to do some keyword research to choose keywords and keyphrases for on page SEO as well as an Adwords campaign for a real estate agency that focuses on luxury high rise condos and homes in the Dallas area. My question is, when choosing keywords do you need to include your location in the key phrase? For instance luxury real estate or dallas luxury real estate? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Rough Simple Math formula for sales/SEO...am I out of touch?
Please let me know if I have this all wrong ... 500 people search for "ham" My client is #1 SERP w/clean SEO I have provided. out of the 500, half click on the SERP the rest got to ads, or to the bathroom, etc. 250 click to website, half go through.... the rest bail (50% bounce, I know this is bad, but just for demo purposes) Leaving 125 as potential Ham buyers. I have a feeling this final # should be much smaller...thoughts, insights? Thanks Mozzers!
